I just got back from a short vacation in Florida with my fiancé and I had a few interesting experiences because of my Buckeyes gear, so I thought I would share.
The first day down, we visited Destin. While walking on the boardwalk, we received an O-H from an older gentleman who was docking his boat. Turns out he was from Dayton and had retired to Destin about 10 years ago. He now spends his time taking tourists out on his boat for fishing charters. We had a friendly conversation and he said it was just nice to talk to somebody from Ohio.
Later that night, we visited my cousin in Crestview. When we entered a local bar, I had a guy yell, “look at that gator bait!” After ignoring that guy, I got to the bar to order my drink, and the bartender tossed something to me. I caught it out of reaction, but then I realized it was a scUM coozie. I immediately dropped it to the ground and stepped on it. That reaction drew a high five from a couple sitting at the bar. Randomly, they were Ohio State fans, and the girl showed me her cell phone which was decked out in OSU stickers. The bartender was actually a friend of my cousin’s and is originally from michigan, and I guess he respected my reaction because the first beer was on the house.
Later, at the same bar, I realized that a guy in an FSU hat was staring at me. I brushed it off until one of my cousin’s friends noticed it too. “Do you know that guy, why does he keep looking at you?” I had no idea, but I figured he was either trying to hit on me, or he didn’t like my shirt. Once he started doing the tomahawk chop, I realized it was the shirt. I’m 6’4, 235 pounds, and my cousin is bigger than me and happens to be in the air force (and also an FSU fan). Once we stood up from our seats at the bar (my cousin with his FSU hat on), the tomahawk chopping and the staring suddenly stopped haha.
The next day my fiancé and I visited Pensacola Beach. I heard, “Hey, are you guys civilians?” A young guy came over and shook our hands. He showed us his Navy tags and said he was just excited to have some time off (for Veterans Day) and interact with civilians again. We talked a little bit about his role in the Navy and about where he was from. Although he grew up in South Carolina, he was originally from Steubenville and he said that when he saw my fiancé’s Buckeyes shirt (it was her this time) he just wanted to say hi to us. We thanked him for stopping us (and for his service), and he was on his way.
A few days later we were at the airport in Pensacola on our way back home. One of the security guards didn’t like my OSU jacket and said, “oh look, it’s the Ohio State Suckeyes”, and then he gave me the gator chomp lol.
A few minutes after passing the gator chomping security guard, we stopped in a souvenir shop and were greeted more friendly this time. “Ohio State, alright!!” Turns out the lady working at the shop was an Ohio State mom, and she was proudly wearing a block O on her lapel. We talked for a while and she told me how happy she was that her daughter picked OSU (the mom was originally from Toledo but the daughter only lived in Ohio for a few months). We exchanged “Go Bucks!” as we left.
Once we boarded the plane, I received another O-H. This time from an elderly gentleman sitting across the isle from me. Although he hadn’t lived in Ohio for almost 50 years, he still followed the team (“I go way back, even before Woody Hayes became mean.”) He told me a story about his championship Benedictine Bengals team receiving a post game talk from Paul Brown, and Brown telling them that he was going to name his new team in Cincinnati after them.
It was definitely an interesting trip. I never realized that we were that important to Florida or FSU fans. If I saw a fan of either team walking around in Cleveland, I wouldn’t even pay them any attention. It’s good to know that they’re that interested in us I guess.
But a great time was made even better because of the Buckeyes that we bumped into. We were able to small talk and share stories and laughs with strangers from all walks of life, just because of the shirts we were wearing, and that was a highlight of the trip for me.
That's a great story there are Bucks fans every where you go. I really don't think a lot of Florida fans would be wearing there stuff in C-bus don't think they would have the guts lol. Love what you did with the Scum thing lol. Glad that you had a good time. Way to show off your Bucks gear.
great story happens to me all the time too guess i should probably wear something other then osu gear but esp during the season i represent proudly....funny thing is i live in grand rapids mi higan and believe it or not there are bucks here as well....go bucks
Great story, although to be honest, I was hoping to hear how you stomped the living sh&@ out of the gator chomping security guard! .....nevertheless, thanks for sharing!
I moved to South Carolina 6 years ago and they ALL hate us, if its SEC they hate us. And for no reason, its really kinda funny. After letting it bother me for a bit I started to remind them of loses and stats. Or just a simple go Eff yourself works too. I'm 6'2 250 and lift for fun. No takers so far.
I am going to Sarasota on Thursday. I always wear my OSU gear loud and proud. I usually get more SCUM fans spouting off than any one else in SW Florida.
HAHA, I get Go Bucks! and OH! all the time in Guam.... its pretty awesome to be half way around the world and people still recognize the symbols and what the block O is.
Know why "hilarious" is such a funny word? Because it's hilarious.
While in San Diego, the first week of October, I got a "Go Bucks" from a bar tender. I asked her if she was a fan and she said she never misses a game. She gave me two bud lights to my surprise. On my next trip to the bar I ask her where she was from. She replied Lancaster. Only about 45 minutes from where I live. Crazy how recognizable a block O is on a hat.
My God UF fans are a bunch of whiny insecure dbags.
probably because they are still butthurt from the Civil War
They're super butt hurt. I bet the only person more butt hurt right now osu that suck bastard jer who used to haunt the campus of psu.
I think you mean the war of aggression, ya damn Yankee!!
I've never had anyone say anything to me when I wore my Buckeye gear in Florida...and I've been there for 14 years. The only people I give the stare-down are the scUM idiots wearing their pathetic shit....especially if I see them when I am in Ohio.
"Your Mouth Keeps Signing Checks that Your Body Can't Cash"
Went to DC in 2011, end of March begining of April, wearing the OSU sweatshirt and all over DC it was the same "O-H" and 'I-O" greeting and "Go Bucks". There's so many Buckeye fans around that you're never alone.
