Thought we could use a little diversion.
I have been watching the gold cup, it's been very entertaining so far. I know it is mostly made up of b team players trying to impress. So my question is:
Who from the b team will make the World Cup squad?
I assume Landon Donavan for sure. I was also impressed with beckerman, corona, and the goal keeper( can't think of his name). I assume Beasley and Johnson are already squad players for sure.
Any thoughts on who will make the team. Who will be the starting 11?
Donovan, Beasley, Goodson, Parkhurst, Bessler, EJ, Wondo, and Ramando all have a shot. I think Wondo took Gomez's spot.
Edit: Forgot Gonzalez who was added for the knockouts

Klinsman has them clicking on all cylinders.
Every once in awhile, they have a mental lapse on D, but I can't remember an American squad that passes this well in the middle and attacking thirds and one that finishes so well.
Nice to see a team that doesn't rely on the long ball....like we did for so, oh..... 25 years. LOL
I'm not a Wondo fan for the National Team. All he can do is finish. His hold up play is bad, he is not particularly athletic or skillful, and he doesn't win headers. If he doesn't get himself in the perfect place, he is a hole. I'd rather see Altidore, Johnson, Dempsey and Gomez as the four strikers. Gomez has a much higher work rate than Wondo.
When do they play again?
Agree. Wondo scored on bad teams and he didn't do anything spectacular other than crossing the defenders face and beating him to the near post.
I was very hard on Donovan and unsure if he was coming back for the right reasons. BUT he looks like he has the fire back. Add him up top with Jozy and they could be extremely dangerous.
Klinsmann took a ton of heat early from fans and then even unnamed players. But they are buying in now and it's paying off. They're playing very well. They need a gold cup final win over Mexico.
I know Howard is top notch goal keeper, but I was impressed with the b team keeper too. Sorry cant think of his name.
I thought corona played well yesterday too. Maybe a bench possibility?
Is beckerman considered a top player to be on the World Cup squad/starting 11? I thought his passing was excellent.
He's going for the throat. He knows what it takes to beat the big boys. That B.S. in the past of getting a 1 goal lead and then playing not to lose didn't get anyone better. If we want to compete with Brazil, Argentina, German, France, England, and Italy we have to be aggressive. Sitting back and playing defense the whole 90 is not gonna do shit for us. I actually enjoy the new style...attack,,,attack...attack...I always watch the women and now I can enjoy the men. Its a great thing for U.S. Soccer fans. Hell I might even go to the World Cup now.
Beckerman is a great passer from the back and for getting things started. Problem I have with him is his passing in the offensive third. In space he passes well, with pressure he panics and makes bad decisions.
I think Beckerman had his best game yesterday. I am critical because he can play too negatively sometimes; always a backwards pass. He was in the flow of the game yesterday and is a good destroyer.
I like Landon on the left wing where he can cut inside to his right foot. It will be interesting how Jurgen integrates Landon with Dempsey. They like to occupy the same space.

Beckerman has a moment every four games or so. I liked his shots from distance. He can put something on the ball and seems to have some accuracy too. But he still is not a play maker and his defense is just plain awful. I can't stress how bad his defense has been.
The defense has been really bad. I always wondered why Bocanegra started for this team for so long and each time the new guard steps out on the field I can see why.
That said, I think the attack is starting to come together. They certainly have their moments. Landy Cakes has definitely elevated their level of play. Corona might be a keeper too. Raimondo looks pretty good.
I'd like to see Altidore, E Johnson, and B Shea, but I am not sold on Wondo. T Howard and B Guzan in the net... Donovan, Dempsey, D Beasley, M Bradley too (just to name a few).
Yeah I was kind of wondering how they would play together. Who would you say is better? Seems like Donavan also creates well for teammates. How could/would they be used together? Have they played well together in the past?
Good problem to have I guess.
Different players. Dempsey is a poacher and shot taker, Donovan plays best on the wing making runs and setting players up. They have played together a large amount in the past, but most coaches use tournaments like the gold cup to experiment with different looks and some "B-team" players. The World Cup squad will have many of these current players from the gold cup, but the starting 11 will look completely different.
Yeah I thought Dempsey had a different style than Donovan but wasn't sure. I am looking forward to the World Cup. Hope the USA qualifies first though.
I have to admit I am relatively new to soccer. Getting to the point where I really enjoy it. Have been a casual watcher for a few years, mainly the men's and women's national team. The mls I haven't been able to get into yet, because it seems like the games are never on tv. Plus it still kinda feels like I am watching the minor league.
Don't forget Stuart Holden coming back from a few bad injuries. Plays in the center of midfield sort of as an attacking hybrid. He was one of the players of the season for Bolton in England before he had a couple bad injuries. He is just coming back and has played pretty well in some mop up time.
Don't like Beckerman. Plays really well against bad teams when he has plenty of time on the ball.
Donovan is head and shoulders above the rest of the players in this specific U.S. team though I am intrigued by Corona and Diskerrud. Beasley at left back has seemed to be an absolute stroke of genius since we really have NO other decent options at left back.
Been really impressed lately. Central defensive pairings are still a bit of a worry to me going forward.
Well you picked a good time to start watching, Klinsmann has the U.S. playing at a better level than they ever had.
It makes it a ton more watchable when there is talent and good tactics..I still have trouble watching any MLS games other than Columbus. It's getting better, but European club teams and developmental squads are still on another level.
Which league do you watch or follow. I have been trying to figure out which one to follow and a team to root for.
I'm a Tottenham fan, which plays in England, but my favorite league is the Bundesliga (Germany). Bayern Munich is tops in the world right now.
Playing style varies by country, it really just depends on what style you enjoy watching.
