Guys, next week I was asked to represent 250,000 members of Iraq Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA) on their annual Storm the Hill Campaign in Washington, D.C. During the week we’ll be meeting with members of congress. I have my stories, but I need YOUR help. I want share other stories, if you or someone you know have had troubles returning to civilian life we want to let Congress know.
We’re looking for stories from people who have had a hard time processing their disability claims, dealing with suicides, veterans who have been involuntarily separated from military service after serving in combat, or if you have had trouble with your GI Bill I want to share your story. If you’re willing or know someone willing please e-mail me at email@example.com
We will be using Tumblr to collect a compelling photo and story content surrounding the VA Benefits Backlog. Veterans, spouses, children, friends, supporters, etc. You can find the site here: http://sth2013.tumblr.com Examples have been posted to the Tumblr site so you can get some ideas of what we are looking for.
We also ask you to sign our petition for President Obama to establish a Presidential Commission to end the VA disability benefits backlog. Here is the link to the petition: http://bit.ly/YjKCNC
Veterans Preference for disabled veterans is a complete joke. Certain veterans are supposed to get non-competitive placement and they get nowhere. The government is paying all these government employees to do the same damn thing and none of them are doing it right. Its a damn shame when a Vet calls an employment representative to help and they act like your ruining their freakin day by asking them to lift a finger. I guess the 70k+ they are making for sitting on their asses doing nothing isn't enough.
Tell the politicians they all fucking suck!!
petition signed....good luck and thank you for your service!
damn near 2 years to receive benefits? Ridiculous! Come on Nobama, do something right for a change. Petition signed and Thank you!
north till ya smell it, west till ya step in it.
Some may not know how bad it is here is the highlights of the lastest report
average wait time: 273 days. But the internal data indicates that veterans filing their first claim, including those who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, wait nearly two months longer, between 316 and 327 days. Those filing for the first time in America’s major population centers wait up to twice as long – 642 days in New York, 619 days in Los Angeles and 542 days in Chicago.
The ranks of veterans waiting more than a year for their benefits grew from 11,000 in 2009, to 245,000 in December – an increase of more than 2,000 percent.
VA expects the number of veterans waiting – currently about 900,000 – to continue to increase throughout 2013 and top a million by the end of this month.
has spent four years and $537 million on a new computer system, 97 percent of all veterans’ claims remain on paper. Since those numbers were tallied by the agency in January, the VA’s two top technology officers have announced their resignations, saying they had accomplished their goals.
In August, the VA’s inspector general said the weight of paper files at the agency’s Winston-Salem, N.C., office had compromised the structural integrity of the building.
Petition signed thank you for posting! I'm an OIF vet and will retire in about 18 months. I went to a vet affairs retirement briefing a few months ago and they said the back log is about 15 months long. 15 months! I have a few issues but nothing that will prevent me from gainful employment when I'm done. Can you imagine if your we're severely disabled due to military service and were forced to separate but did not have the ability to support your family for 15 months?!? Deplorable!
Absolutely the truth.
gotta believe you would have better luck with a Republican president. But good luck to you and thanks for your service.
Art, waited over 6 months for my initial disability claim. Now going through some follow up issues on denial of a claim. Thanks for what you are doing. Signed the petition also.
Take a look at the Tumbler website if your moved do a pic like the rest and we'll add you to our collage. http://sth2013.tumblr.com
I dream of a day when chickens can cross the road without having their motives questioned.
Here is a website that has more information than any government employee will ever tell you. The truth is they don't want you to know exactly how much power you have. If you feel like you have been discriminated against because you are a disabled veteran or veteran in general you can file a formal complaint through the Department of Labor...if you are not hired and were interviewed as a veteran/disabled veteran you are entitled to know why...
The problem is all of these government employees are union members and they are not gonna "rat" each other out. They want their cousin Tim to get the job rather than you. If you experience some shady stuff file a complain with he Department of Labor and if they don't do anything call your congressman...its your right.
This site I am posting is the encyclopedia of what they don't want you to know..enjoy
Props to the boys at VA Watchdog...BTW they are not getting paid 70K to do jack...they do it because they love veterans.
to the down voter:
Fact is, this crap is happening on Obama's watch. He owns it. Obama has plans/is cutting the military. That is a fact too. Less money, means more b.s. for our service members. Sorry that the truth bothers you. lol
I cannot agree more with this!
I have been retired from the Army for a few years now, and I also receive disability. The thing I still do not understand, is why they deduct my disability pay out of my retirement? I served 22 years and earned my retirement.
To all of the other military out there: Thanks for everything you do, and hopefully someday we will be appreciated for the sacrifices we have made for the freedom of our GREAT country.
This is the front row. Politics goes in the hot spot. But since that only applies to liberals:
Aren't you right wing assholes bitching about the debt? Now you blame Obama for making cuts that help balance the budget? You know the Paul Ryan gut every program for veterans and working class while we hand out billions In subsidies to big oil
You guys can't have it both ways. If you dislike the spending cuts blame Bush. He put two wars on the credit card. Obama is the tax and spend liberal who actually is shrinking the debt.
Folks lets stay on target....This isn't a political debate on whose fault it is. Nearly a million vets are waiting to get their disability claim and we all let it get this bad. We as country simply need to fix this.
You have to be realistic. What the sequester cuts revealed is that Washington is so gridlocked nothing will get done anymore. The ideologies are so incompatable that when the massive cuts start, it's not going to stop. Defense contractors and big corporations will always get paid...we veterans are always going to feed on table scraps. It's the reality under any administration.

Basically it's this... put your life on the line for the country, and then take a number and get screwed by illegal immigrants and whetever is the hot topic of the day for the politicians to clammer about.
Our problem in this country is people like you not knowing who is doing the screwing. Rest assured its not Mexicans preventing you from getting VA care. Stop being intellectually lazy and ignorant.
