I think when you make $1 million a year in a public position a little graciousness should be in order.
Reminds me of Richard Lewis getting someone fired after the OSU basketball media guide described him as a "actor, writer, comedian, drunk".
Comedians should be able to take a joke and a defensive coordinator paid $1MM by the state of Ohio that gives up 386 yards a game should show a little gravitas when someone suggests they could do better.
Also bear in mind that the Iacono family (also own Tommy's Pizza) are longtime supporters of OSU and the athletic department. Not good for business to tolerate employees who "joke" with the family of prominent staff in this manner - even if the customer knows it was in jest.
First off, anything that happened to the delivery boy is 100% entirely his fault. You aren't friends with Mrs Fickell. So what were you trying to accomplish with that comment? Essentially he was trying to be cheeky and cute. Sure he was joking and meant no harm. But that doesn't make it a smart thing to say or do. When I talk to a client in my industry I don't make jokes to them that are critical of the jobs of their spouses. Nobody does... So just because he is a fan doesn't make it smart to do what he did. Pretty stupid and immature move.
Second, Mrs Fickell needs to lighten up. You're a grown ass woman. The guy made a comment about better tackling. For goodness sakes!!! There are millions upon millions of other people critical about OSU all over. How is she going to handle every opinion she hears? You have to do a lot to get me to call your boss and complain about you. She needs to take a breather. I understand things are difficult and stressful during the season. But then again, what did she hope to accomplish as well. If she was trying to get the kid punished, well then mission accomplished. I hope thats what you wanted. The kid got fired. It wasn't "unfortunate" he got fired as the University said. It was deliberate. So take ownership. Its obviously what you wanted.
The one party I don't blame is the pizza place owner. What the hell else is he/she supposed to do? Here is the skinny. If I get a call from one of my clients about how one of my employees made a joke that was critical of the job that their spouse is doing and they tell me they are never going to do business with me again, its pretty likely I'm going to fire that employee. You simply can't have that. What if it blows up in the media (like this did) and it shows I did nothing? I have to fire them. The real victim is the pizza place. Getting all kinds of negative press.
Kid = dumbass
Mrs Fickell = "lighten up"
I'm all in favor of keeping dangerous weapons out of the hands of fools. Let's start with typewriters.

Bids has a new thread based on OSUs report of the situation. Manager overheard employee telling another employee of his joke, manager called Fickells to verify.
Agree with your main premise for sure, but that's not a good example. Hard to be gracious about someone calling you a drunk.
