Ignore Ohio State football's Twitter noise, Notre Dame deserved BCS title bid
By Patrick Maks
Updated: Tuesday, January 15, 2013 01:01
Some Ohio State football players are delusional, and their Twitter accounts prove it.
As Alabama depantsed and flogged Notre Dame in front of 26.4 million people watching and snickering from home, Buckeye football players raced to their laptops, iPhones or — gasp — perhaps even their athletic department-issued iPads and took to the interwebs to let the world know how they deserved a spot in the BCS National Championship game on Jan. 7.
According to them, the Fighting Irish, which, like OSU, finished the season undefeated, were unfit of the chance to win their first national title since 1988.
Never mind the Crimson Tide — which eventually proved their almost-frightening dominion over the rest of the college football world — couldn’t do what Notre Dame and the Buckeyes did and emerge from the regular season unblemished.
Still, according to some OSU players, Notre Dame backed itself into the sport’s biggest stage despite having nearly an identical, if not better season as coach Urban Meyer’s squad.
It’s not only an absolutely absurd notion but also an exceptionally illogical and ignorant one.
Don’t tell that to some of the most high-profile Buckeyes, though.
Heck, junior running back and Abrams tank Carlos Hyde tweeted he wasn’t going to bother watching the game. He had better things to do, apparently.
From his account, @king_hyde34, he said: “I’d rather play Call of Duty than watch this game tonight. King of COD!”
Good for you, Carlos. Good for you.
Comparatively, Hyde’s comments are pretty docile.
His teammate, junior receiver Corey “Philly” Brown, openly pined for an Alabama victory via his account, @phillybrown10: “Whelp since we not playing in game tonight like we should be... #rolltide lol.”
If you can get past the fact the tweet is missing at least two words, take a gander at the phrase “like we should be.” Talk about awkward, considering NCAA sanctions banned OSU from the postseason. There is no “should be.” But Brown continues to assert the antithesis of that, anyway:
“@phillybrown10: Headed to Miami to tell Brian Kelly to throw in the towel before it gets ridiculos... Smh clearly one team shouldn’t be there #overrated”
Yet, by that logic, wouldn’t an OSU team that notched only two wins against teams ranked in the Associated Press top 25 poll (No. 24 Michigan and No. 25 Nebraska) be overrated, too? At least Notre Dame beat eventual-Rose Bowl champion No. 7 Stanford.
Who did the Buckeyes beat that Notre Dame didn’t? A Penn State team sanctioned back to the stone age? An at-best average Wisconsin squad?
Here’s another fine gem from Brown after the Tide went up, 21-0, against the Irish with 14:56 in the second quarter:
“@phillybrown10: So much for that great front 7... ND just got 21edddddddddddddddddddd.”
While the 20 D’s really drive the point home, I’m not so certain that “21edddddddddddddddddddd” is a verb, let alone a word.
That’s a bunch of malarkey, Philly.
And so are most arguments that some how, some way, OSU was more deserving of a national championship invite than Notre Dame or deserved an AP national title.
Can you understand OSU’s frustration? Of course, especially considering the penalties that keep them out of the postseason were hardly of their own doing. Was Notre Dame overrated? Maybe — but who’s to say the Buckeyes would’ve fared better against coach Nick Saban’s machine that is Alabama football?
In reality, the struggle of “which team is more deserving” is little more than settling which crew earned the right to be publicly defiled and shamed at the hands of the Crimson Tide.
Like the Irish, OSU is a long, long way from that kind of dominance.

What the hell do you expect the players to think and say? Only a "Loser" would capitulate and think they don't have a chance. Odds are Bama would win this year against the Bucjs....by how much...who knows? Regardless, if you are a player, you feel and know on your heart you can beat anybody...that's the way you are supposed to think. Polls, odds and "who should win" is for the bookies.

Lantern writers always have pent up hostility toward football players who one night stand the chicks they write poems to.

That's what I gathered from the article. Aside that he decided to get on his high horse and bash people's grammar on freaking Twitter. IT'S TWITTER!! And also, as somebody else already pointed out... OSU would have likely played ND not Alabama..
I'm still claiming a national championship, hell we have a better claim to this one than Bama does for half of theirs

I know it lists a man as the writer of that, but that was totally the most feminine rant I've read in a while...The Nerve!! hahaha
Nowhere did the OSU players say that ND didn't deserve the opportunity to play in the NC game like the writer is implying.
Those players simply tweeted what most of America was thinking, saying, tweeting, etc... And that was that ND was embarrassing themselves.
Philly Brown suggested we should have been playing in the NC game. But he never said ND didn't deserve to be. He never implied ND didn't earn it.
And where is all the delusion???? Everyone in America was criticizing ND in that game. It was embarrassing for them. They were awful. They blew it. They deserved the criticism.

I guess I don't understand where the writer is coming from is this not the school paper?
It cracks me up how many idiots want to talk about osu vs bama. They'd have been playing NOTRE DAME!!! And the kids on this team did nothing wrong, so of course they are going to feel/say it.
Why are they writing about this? And who cares!!!??? If i am an OSU player i would feel like we should have a shot at playing for the National Title as well but it is all "what if's".
Assuming we would have won the B1G Championship game against Nebraska would we have moved up ahead of BAMA in the BCS rankings?
I am a die hard Buckeye fan but IMO i do not believe we would have moved up to 2, undefeated or not I still think they would have put a 1 loss SEC team in vs. an undefeated OSU team that played a tremendously week schedule. Or maybe that is just me justifying it that way to not harp on the fact that we did not play in the Championship! LOL :)
The Lantern if obviously a bunch of Commies.
The author of this column is a complete idiot!
Well put: It was a huge reach. And well written had it been a more solid premise. But those players were spot on for the most part, so it was a stupid article. Too bad for the writer, because it will do what he intended: it will get "shared" and increase his exposure. But since the basic premise really is a big reach, he ends up looking like he's trying too hard.
I concur with Carlos. COD was much more fun and mantelly stimulating that watching that game. ...These guys are just stating the obvious, as others have posted. Lol, King of COD...
Wow.... Journalism is really on the downslide. Complete waste of time to read....
He should've focused more on the fact that Ohio State IF no.2 would've played ND. His article was a bit misguided, he should've brought up more points on to why or why not Ohio State would've made it to the no.2 spot if they won the B10 title game.
Just another hack writer finding an opportunity to take some shots at the Buckeyes. Like they say, Haters gonna Hate!
