Why does the BIG coaches constantly say the goal is to win the BIG and get to the rose bowl? To hell with the damn rose bowl, the goal is to win the national championship every year but the BIG seems to want to settle for the consolation prize every year. I've never heard a SEC coach say anything about hoping to play for the damn sugar bowl because they understand that it's the crystal ball that matters. I understand every team is not capable of winning a title but at least make it seem like you have national championship aspirations for your players sake.
I think the thinking is that if you win your Conference you put yourself in the position to possibly play in the NC game. One game at a time etc etc etc. Coach speak
It's not the Rose Bowl's fault the match ups have been less than desirable, it's the BCSs fault.
People should not get overly emotional about what Coaches say or do not say........regardless of the conference every team should have the goal of winning their conference and reaching a specific bowl game but for Purdue, Illinois, or any other bottom feeder setting a goal of winning a national championship is great but not realistic (for some programs). Is it a goal? who knows....who cares. At a minimum the big boy conferences should always have a goal to at least make it to a BCS bowl.....or a Jan 1st bowl game.
Urban has made it clear the other teams need to step up their game. The Rose Bowl is and always will be "The Grandaddy of Them All" and whether you think of it that way any more is your own opinion. If i am not mistaken the NC game IS the Rose Bowl this year so there's that....and who knows what it will look like when the playoff system starts.
The Rose Bowl is about tradition and some coaches clearly still hold it in high regard AND it is a BCS game so it SHOULD be a goal.
Every coach wants to win the National Title but there is such a thing called reality. Most teams in the BIG outside of Ohio have zero shot of winning a National Title on a consitant basis. As a coach you always have more than one goal. You can't just say we win the National Title or the year is a failure cause if you happen to lose a game, now your season in the eyes of your players is over. You have to have several smaller goals or ladder goals. I am sure Meyer's tells his players the goal is to win the NAtional Title and we can do that if accomplish the following goals a,b and c. I would bet each player is making individual goals for the coaches as well. If you preach National Title or bust and you lose, now every thing you say for the rest of the year's as a coach falls on deaf ears.
Twon while I admire your aspirations, it's not realistic for most of the BIG to target NCS. Urban is a rare breed here and the rose bowl means you have won your conference, so that is also a great goal for most. I can see the downvotes here for you but don't mind your enthusiasm. We are fortunate we are on a different plane at the moment.....with Urbanator. Let's hope this year we get to the Rose bown in the NCS.
And to think that Tress went to 1 Rosebowl during his tenure (for good reasons of course).....Urbs could get to a ROse Bowl AND National Championship game in his second year.......crazy.
