That's my story and I'm sticking to it (but I've been wrong before)!
Great house with a little less than FOUR freaking months till the season starts.... re-visiting the Herbie saga is certainly fair game.
I'll pose a counter point to the "Herbie is a D Bag" posters. Having watched his reporting over the years and including the clip from the 06/7 NC pre-game Herbie loves the Buckeyes, but had some serious (and in retrospect) legitimate issues with JT.
1. He was frustrated with JT's "gentle parent" approach to some of the errant players who were consistently getting in trouble and putting the program at risk. He said as much = "some players are simply taking advantage of him"
2. He was disgusted with the mish mash offensive "strategy" that seemed unable to move the ball without a Heisman caliber running back or QB.
He called JT out on both of these on camera. I'm sure JT would have preferred that Herbie call him directly, and keep those sensitive opinions to himself....
I'd like a little more backstory here.... My gut says that Herbie did in fact bring these issues up with JT, and clearly nothing happened so Herbie took it upon himself to try and get the message to register in the court of public opinion.
I Love JT, but it's hard to argue that Kirk was correct on both counts.
JT should have hired an OC and fired Bollman if not after 2003, when we farted a NC away with an offense so moribund it's hard to believe that 2004 was worse when it was CLEAR something had to change.
The issue about player discipline is handled quite well by Ramzy in this article on 11 Warriors from a few yrs ago. This is the tough one. JT's method helped these troubled kids find themselves, but not before they did severe damage to the program. MoC could have cost us the NC had the NCAA gone for the jugular, Troy's suspension killed 2005, and Pryor where just the highlights.
My take is that Herbie didn't stand up for the program b/c he didn't believe JT was handling things the right way....so he remained silent and then lost it with the "I wouldn't let my kids play in that offense"... at the time I'm not so sure I could argue with him.
Eleven Warriors is the largest free Ohio State Buckeyes sports outlet on the internet, featuring news, in-depth analysis, Ohio State football and basketball recruiting, videos and some funny.
I can't pile on to Tress; in my opinion he had the best ten year fun of any coach in Ohio State history. As for Kirk, I do feel sorry for him; he was between a rock and a hard place. I do want to state that I haven't watched College Game Day since 2010.
