meh. Pretty underwhelming.
Wow. Heard on Fox radio yesterday they were going to throw brinks truck at Pitino and Donavon, maybe they got no's from those two already, just like Stevens and Khan.
Iowa got rid of Alford.
New Mexico fell on their face this tourney out west.
Not bad for a 4th or 5th choice I guess.
Is UCLA a blue blood coaching destination? This hire does not suggest that.

Not a bad hire, but nothing that would excite me either if I were a UCLA fan.
MO, Mora as a football coach hire is better than Alford
Very much so. My guy likes the hire but I told him he is talking up his own book and full of shit. I told him he got rejected more than me on a drunk Saturday night in college. Manneken, your contact can't be happy about this?

In my opinion Alford is not a bad hire just not a great hire. He will most likely keep their program where it is at or lift it a tad but not greatly. Howland was a pretty good coach but seemed to rub everyone wrong. Can't say that Alford is much different. I give him 3-5 years with a PAC 12 title but little chance of making the final four. In some respects it is a shame that UCLA is viewed with the potential to be what they once were but they have lost the stature and today it will be much harder to regain than it would have been 20 years ago.
UCLA has won 11 titles (?) and Wooden was 10 of them. He retired 38 seasons ago. Yup, Howland went to 3 final fours in 10 years. Guess who is also 40 minutes away from 3 in 7? Program is good but not great without Wooden. This will be Duke after Coach K.
This hire makes no sense whatsoever. Alford managed to win only one NCAA tournament game during his stay at Iowa. He matched that "feat" at UNM. His team gets bounced by Harvard this year. Hiring Chris Jent or even Greg Paulus would've made more sense!
What does Casey Wasserman's inner circle have to say about this? /giggle
Not what they wanted or expected. This was the AD's call and they decided not ot use booster money as was once believed instead relying solely on scrilla from the UC regents. Brad Stevens absolutely turned them down though. They threw the kitchen sink at him and then made one last push on Friday but to no avail. Cold dose of water today across the faces of ucla basketball rooters as far as their place in the college basketball landscape. What a shame given their inherent natural advantages.
If you apply the transitive property here...
UCLA fired a guy (Howland) whose team beat the shit out of a team (Arizona) three times that defeated the team (Harvard) that knocked the new guy's former team (New Mexico) out of the tourney. Pathetic search and ultimate hire.
Would have rather had Ben Howland. UCLA really needed to do their due diligence before firing Howland to make sure there was a clear upgrade.
