A couple days ago on the Colin Cowherd show The Herd, Colin spoke of an inside source he knew who had worked closely with Urban Meyer at Florida. This inside source told Colin around the time all the Tress mess happened that Urban was tiring of the SEC recruiting tactics and the Florida HS system in general (producing more thugs than student athletes). It could be an eerie coincidence but I was always of the school of thought that maybe Urban caught wind of the turmoil behind the scenes in Columbus before everything broke publicly and thought he should step aside for "health" concerns for a year or two (to wait for the OSU job to open?). He would be the only coach in a position to pull something like this off due to his national prominence and Ohio roots so the risk was low for him to not to get the job. Colin even hinted there is something there and he is one that is not for conspiracy theories. My subsequent thought is pretty out there and I have no facts for my argument. Did we secretly want Urban knowing of his displeasures in the SEC and looked for a way to out Tressel to provide an opening for the gig? I certainly can believe the perfect storm happened where we have a legendary coach replace another legendary coach and the timing was just right for both parties. When Colin leaked that out two years after the fact? It has me thinking my initial position on the subject that strings were pulled for Urban to be at OSU could be true...thoughts everyone?

Pretty confident no one at OSU was looking for a way "to out" Tressel
If true, Urban's a liar, and I don't think he's a liar. I also don't see Urban letting a school out one of his friends in the coaching profession.

I think Meyer was tired of the SEC and all of the shenanigans, I think he was tired of having to try and keep control of a bunch of kids that couldn't stay out of trouble, but I also think he was taking his job way too seriously and did have health problems as a result.
I can't imagine that his kids would raw up contracts and publicly make statements about his health or lack thereof just as a show. I think he planned on stepping away from the game, but at the same time, he did not plan on being away forever and when the tOSU job came available he was shown the perfect opportunity to not only get back into coaching, but return home to the program he grew up rooting for as a kid.
I highly doubt it was a big conspiracy as I have heard whispers that Urban Meyer working with Joe Paterno to be the next coach at PSU. It was not a matter of if he would return to coaching, but when and where and tOSU was the perfect fit for both of those. We got lucky that he was available and from Ohio, but sometimes it is beter to be lucky than good.
Overall, I think Meyer has learned a lot about coaching and life in general. He gets a lot of flack for his time at UF, and I do think he was recruiting premium prospects without regard to behavioral backgrounds and it hurt the perception of his program and ultimately led to him getting worn down. People think he is some heartless coach who only wants to win and does not care about his players, but I disagree and believe that all the off field trouble was part of the reason he got so burned out.
Now, he seems more relaxed and balanced and I think he has positioned himself in a job that he loves, in a place that he and his family love and is looking to do things a little bit different this time.
I have spoken with someone who is good friends with Luke Fickell (went to high school together and their family's are still close). They told me that Urban had pretty much accepted the job before they named Luke interm HC but wanted to take a year off to be with family. Luke even knew he was going to be HC for a year and then Urban was going to take over.
We were a little intoxicated while discussing this topic but definitely not hard to believe.
The Board of Trustees and boosters were not liking the way the offense was progressing (i.e Bollman's ineptitude, Hazell calling plays, etc). Urban to the rescue? Thoughts?
When there is smoke there is fire. I would love to get to the bottom of this. Good post thanks
Well stated Buckeye49. This is what I believed and continue to believe. I'm thrown a wrench by hearing all the side chatter that I have to find clarification of this.
