The NFL network is playing highlights of all the previous SB's and I've always been a fan of the old footage from the 70's so of course Im watching some of the highlights.
Im watching the Steelers/Cowboys and it is so strange to watch how the game was played back then.
The first thing you can't help but notice is the difference in equipment. There was no Nike Combat gear and elaborate facemasks. I bet those guys spent days in the ice baths
Also, it is amazing to watch Staubach play out of the shotgun in an age when the shotgun was uncommon.
The biggest thing I noticed was the hits these guys used to get away with. On one play a Cowboy receiver made a catch at Pitts 2 yd line and a safety put his forearm right in the guys grill to knock the ball lose. Back then it was common for the db's to go high and try and knock your head off. (Jack Tatum anyone). It seemed like every play had a facemask penalty uncalled, or a punch underneath a facemask, or a lineman driving the qb into the turf.
My how the game has changed....
I think the game has to evolve. If back then, the players were as big, fast & strong as they are now, there would have been more serious injuries. Just saw a show on Jr Seau & traumatic brain injuries. Said they take about 1000 hits to head per career. Avg life of an NFL player is 55 years old...

I agree with you about the injuries and how the athletes are on a different level now. It was just "nostalgic" to see how the game has come such a long way. I wasn't trying to imply that I wished it was still the way it was back then.
