I see a lot of people calling him out and I just don't see what he did today that was so bad... I thought he called a way more aggressive game and his DL definitely stepped up and helped him out for a change. Hankins, Simon, Williams, were getting pressure all day...
I don't think he can be blamed for the piss poor tackling by the team. Truth is, Shazier has never been a wrap up tackler and it made him look bad a few times today. Bryant is the same way, they are headhunters not tacklers... I thought the staff called a good game, I just think there were was bad tackling and guys getting beat by their man and not getting off blocks.
Even Williams made some bad plays, it was bad execution today on the defensive side, not the coaches fault. They brought 4 or more all day. They didn't let the QB sit back and pick them apart like the last 2 weeks.
I completely agree. I'd like to see the DB's giving opposing receivers a little less room, but that's about it.
My issue is why were we in nickle most of the game? C Grant struggled but I thought Storm played ok We were in nickle on most first down and notice Cal was running more on first down. They started running more throughout the third and forth QT but we stayed in nickle.
Too logical, too obvious, too simple, therefore unacceptable to this board...
I will say one thing about this defense. You aren't going to make a living running between the tackles. Outside is another story.

Poor tackling, penalties etc etc. We have been spoiled at LB and the decline began last year. Shazier, Barnett and Bryant are poor fundamental tacklers and the other 3 backers (Sabino, Grant and Kline) are just not terribly talented at being in position and getting off blocks and making big plays. We have lost out on some good recruits and must get Mitchell and the studs that are going to be in the 2014 class to regain our tradition of great linebacking. To put all this on Fickell is premature.
I will say this. From a scheme / play calling standpoint, we played much of the first quarter looking very much like a Dantonio defense -- aggressive, lots of movement and really attacking and dictating. Then Tedford came out on the TD drive and called the drive like he knew exactly where the holes were going to be. From then on, the scheme and play calling looked very much like a Fickell D. Thank God for Simon and Big Hank for some tremendous individual efforts.
What was up with no rotation on the DL? We played the starters essentially the entire game, then needed to spell them with the three Frosh late with the game on the line because the starters were winded. I really thought we would see rotation early so the starters would be fresh in the 4th quarter.
Still not catching the ever-contagious WHINE-FLU!!!
The defense was tired.
Stop for a moment and let that sink in. Know why I think the defense played like it did in the second half? I think it was a function of an offense with a revved up tempo going three and out 7 times in a row and wearing down the defense more than anything else.
the problem is simple. LB corp are mediocre. Outside of Shazier (and he is not that great in coverage) they win very little battles at the point of attack, have trouble getting off blocks and dont tackle very well. Horrible combination
Piss poor coaching on defense. Cal lost to Nevada. How many bubble screens will teams run against us before we figure out how to stop it? Can we ever adapt on defense? Shazier has not shown any development. Grant? Isaw him out there, but not providing much. We recruit the top DL class ( or second) and then hardly play them.
