Its a simple question. We are 4 games in and I'm starting to see some trends. Lets take a look at some statistics.
Game 1: We beat Miami of Ohio 56 - 10. We gave up only ten points defensively, 312 total yards in which 313 came through the air
Miami has gone on to post a 2-2 record with wins over UMass, and Southern Illinois coupled with a blowout loss to Boise State 39-12
In their wins they gained 336 yards total. (226/110 = Pass/Rush)
408 total against UMass 192/216
In their loss against Boise they gained 227 total yards 178/49
Game 2 we beat UCF 31 - 16 giving up 352 total 249/103
UCF is currently 2-1 with a bye week this week. They play Missouri next Saturday. They've beaten Akron and FIU.
Akron total yards 386 180/206 (they scored 56 points)
FIU they beat 33-20. Total yards was 306 154/152
Game three we beat Cal 35-28 giving up 512 total yards 288/224. Cal is a 1 - 3 team.
Lost to Nevada 31-24 with 365 total yards 255/110
Beat Southern Utah 31-50 with 518 total yards 229/289
Lost to USC 27-9 with 250 total yards 173/77
We just beat UAB this weekend 29-15 giving up 403 total yards 259/144. UAB is winless at 0-3 with losses to Troy and South Carolina
Lost to Troy 39-29 with 459 total yards 325/134
Lost to South Carolina 49-6 with 267 total yards 240/27
As you can see, these are not strong teams. They have a combined win/loss total of 5-9. The defensive is giving up an average of almost 400 (394) yards per game putting our defense ranked 71st out of all of college football. We achieved this rank by going through the easiest part of our schedule and playing every game at home. And while the scoring defense is ranked a respectable 31st in giving up 17 and a half points per game, its not against quality competition as the opponants schedule and results have shown. The only team we really "dominated" was Miami of Ohio.
In our win over UCF, our defense does not distinguish itself from Akron or Florida International. Us -352 Others- 386, 306.
Our "win" against Cal was not a certain thing. You can thank Cal's kicker for sparing us from humiliation because if he makes those kicks, chances are we lose that game. We hardly ever stopped UAB all day long. A couple drives that did stall and resulted FGs weren't stopped by us. They were stopped by mental errors on UABs part in committing penalties.
So what does this defense do well? Tackle? Stuff the run? Turnovers? Pressure the QB?
I'm going to say it. This is the worst series of defensive performances I've seen at Ohio State in over a decade. I don't even remember the last time OSU gave up so many big plays. Doesn't this laying off coverage supposed to prevent big plays? So now we get dinked and dunked AND give up the large chunk?
Bout the only thing good this defense does in my eyes is create turnovers. It needs to because without those turnovers they would be giving up a lot more points and yards along with a probable 2-2 record so far.
If you are seeing something I don't, by all means lay it on me because I'm starting to think 9-3....maybe 8-4 instead of 10-2. 11-1 is a pipe dream.
"The only thing That Team Up North will be tasting this year is the salty tears of defeat" - UFM
You do realize that UAB's offense did not get inside OSU's 30 til 2nd play of the 4th Q and never past the 16 yd line?
As frustrating as it was watching yesterday, the bend don't break 'worked' for a W.
You can't handle the truth
And I shall rejoice in victory for another 365 days over That School Up North.
