This is one I am sure you have never heard of....between January 1968 and July 1969, Woody Hayes went ballastic, and fired his assistant coach, later famous Notre Dame leader, Lou Holtz, three times within 19 months!
On the good side, he rehired Lou within just a few minutes after the firings!
FIRING #1- Lou was in charge of the practice field at Ohio State. With the then to be 1968 NC team, practicing on that field was like solid gold to Woody. One evening with a "little rain forcast", Lou called the groundskeeper and asked if "we need to tarp the field"(?)..".no ",the groundskeeper said, "we need a little mositure on the field as it was real hard." Holtz made the decsion to not tarp the field and went to bed....That evening a literal monsoon hit, and turned the field into a quagmire and mudhole....Lou got a call at 1:30am in the morning and Woody asked him if "he had tarped the field"....when he said "No ",Woody went ballastic...had Lou call on the staff people and go out and tarp the field RIGHT NOW...and "by the way", Woody told him, "You are "FIRED!"
FIRING #2- It late December 1968,,,Lou was in charge of the bed check fror all of the players at the RoseBowl. No only was he responsible for the bed-check of the players, but for any who had wives...and any players rooming together. In all Holtz had 9 diffferent rooming lists to check. Lou was supposed to make the checks at 12 midinight.....Woody had insisted that all be in their rooms by Midniht....but Lou had a late dinner party on 77 Sunset strip..and not being familiar with the traffic in California he got turned around and did not make it on time for the 12 oclock bed check..Woody found out about it, went beserk... and Holtz said.."I was fired on the spot"!
FIRING #3- it happened on the practice field...the Buckeyes had great athletes in 1969 from the 1968 NC team...i.e. Tatum, Stillwagon,Mike Sensibaugh, and Rex Kern to name a few....Woody was trying to run some plays and they were not working...over and over again....Rex Kern the great OSU QB was behind Woody and was laughing when he was chewing out Holtz...Kern kept laughng and mocking Woody and Holtz could not stop laughing in Wooy's face beacuse of Kern who Woody could not see..Woody did not think it was a luahging matter......Woody finally blew his top and told Holtz --"you're fired".....
Of course Woody took Holtz back and they moved on, and so did Holtz....who said later..."You could't possibly be around Coach Hayes without him having a profound influence on your life''..there were times when you wanted to strangle him...but there were other times when you admired and loved him"
Such were the three "firings" of Lou Holtz while an assistant coach for the Buckeyes!

another great story!
The Father, The Son... well, it's the
The Holy Trinity... as I see it.
I want to add another Woody Firing story to my post....When Bo Schemblecker was an assistant to Woody...there were in a meeting where Bo and Woody had a dissagreement on how to run a play....Woody told Bo to "shut up", and Bo told Woody to "shut up"....Woody threw a chair at Bo, and Bo picked it up and threw it back at Woody.......Woody yelled at Bo..."Bo Your're Fired!"......
Bo then went to the locker room, and about 5 minutes, and was wiping off to take a shower....when Woody stuck his head in the door...and said, "well Bo, see you tommorow!"
Haha.Nice Big Jim! Way before my time, but nice to hear some old-school stories I probably would've never heard otherwise!
And I shall rejoice in victory for another 365 days over That School Up North.
Damn maybe Donald trump should've been paying royalties to the woody Hayes foundation all of these years.
keep em coming. These are absolute treasures.
Awesome story thanks for sharing and keep em coming
