It was USC with Sam "The Bam" Cunningham that ran all over them. Bear went back to Alabama and TOLD (not asked the govenor) that he was recruiting black players. Florida also opened up at the same time.
USC beat Alabama 42-21 in Birmingham on September 12, 1970. Sam Cunningham's performance in the game was reportedly a factor in convincing the University of Alabama and its fans to let Coach Bear Bryant integrate Southern football. Jerry Claiborne, a former Bryant assistant, said, "Sam Cunningham did more to integrate Alabama in 60 minutes than Martin Luther King did in 20 years."

There is still racism at Bama. Then, as now, the sororities and fraternities remain completely segregated. Check out this article from just a few months ago:
UA president wants to see racial integration in fraternities, sororities

TUSCALOOSA, Alabama -- University of Alabama President Guy Bailey says that while he hasn't worked at the school long enough to hear any concerns over racial segregation in fraternities and sororities, he'd like to see integration on his campus.
After serving five full weeks as president, Bailey told The Crimson White (in an Oct. 12 interview) that equal opportunities and how they apply to UA's Greek chapters isn't something that has been discussed since he arrived in Tuscaloosa.
"Normally, your policies don’t involve telling them who their membership can be or cannot be," Bailey told the CW. "Having said that, we would like to see the integration of the fraternities and sororities."
Bailey says integration would be a positive thing for the image of the university and that his administration will do what it can to encourage and help it move forward.
Note: If you Google this topic, you will see that past UA presidents have purportedly sought integration in the Greek system for years to no avail. I see no change forthcoming.
They got beat in Birmingham by USC by the score of 42-21. Sam Cunningham and Clarence Davis ran all over Bear Bryant's Tide. It was a thing of beauty.

Alabama prefers a pocket passing QB while we prefer an athletic one,
Not black vs white
