DBC Jan. 28: Crunching The Numbers

    Steve,

Is it possible that Griffin could be finishing out the year on scholarship then use free tuition starting in the Summer to free up the scholarship? Wouldn't it make sense for him to be able to go to training table, etc.? Since the scholarship would be idle otherwise.

That is not possible. Once a kid is on schollie you can not move him back and forth as a counter just because the kid may be able to get free tuition or their parents have a ton of money. Once a counter you either remain a counter or leave the team. This eliminates shadiness going on with boosters, etc.

I agree this is very complicated. .....

Steve-- I'm guessing that at some time or another you have read the B1G's rules, rather than hearing someone's intrepration of what they had read.

Could you please direct an interested recruiting fanatic where the B1G hides their rules and if they are available for viewing.

    Thanks

Even if he volunteers to do so? Remember, he first became a member of the team as a walk-on. I don't see why he couldn't return to that status. It wouldn't be as if they were forcing him to do it. Being Archie's son, I can see him taking one for the team.

Wow! I agree. I waited to read this and was really impressed. Well done, Steve.

That is not true, the rules say an explanation to the B1G is required when a scholarship is not renewed; and a on year walkup conversion to a one year free ride should be easy to expain.

Unless you have access to the rules; let's see them.

Not true. He actually signed a letter of intent as an incoming freshman.

And WPBucki, I worked in DI college atheltics for 7 years and I am 99 percent sure that you can not bounce a kid back and forth from a scholarship player to a non-scholarship player and not have it count against your 85 limit.

Then why has this option been put on the table by almost every recruiting guru?

  • I think it's one of those message board fantasies that has continued to persist ... kind of like Mike D'Andrea one day moving to defensive end.

GRIFFIN IS A COUNTER (from what I was told by TWO OSU sources).

  • Steve -- based on information from the athletic office all you can do is quote it. But, on TOS, the boards were hailing the information in the Cleveland and Columbus papers last week, including the stuff came directly from Archie as definitive recruiting rules. A poster over there that has access to the rule book labled the offical tOSU information as 'obscuration'.

Unless you have been involved in the B1G rules, you would be well advised to signifantly reduce you confidence llevel.

  • I asked two people at OSU. They said Griffin was a counter. That's all I know. Maybe he isn't and they have his spot to give away. It will all come out in the wash on Aug. 1. I'm not worried about it.
