Did JT use Ginn correctly?

  • I mean should Ginn have been a CB who helped on offense like Gamble? Is Ginn Nfl wr talent or would he had been better off @ cb?
We needed him at wr I know but he seems like for Ginn he would have been better to devolpment as a cb like gamble and also play wr.

I don't know if he had the 'quickness' or hips to be a CB. His straight line speed is amazing, but CB's need very quick hips which I don't know if he had.

  • Got him drafted in the top 10 so yea I would say he did.

There were others who Tressel goofed up with like Jake Ballard but he got it right with Ginn.

  • I think you could make an argument that for Ginn's sake, it would have been better for him to be a CB that sometimes plays WR. He could be an elite CB in the NFL right now that can also return punts, instead of a PR and the 4th WR.

However, for the sake of those Buckeye teams that he was on, I think he was too dynamic of a playmaker to not have the ball in his hands as much as possible. Also, he opened up so much just by being on the field every play on offense.

So, for the sake of winning, I think he was used correctly. It is just a shame that it potentially cost him some money and fame in the NFL.

I am basing this off of his reputation as a CB in high school. I never saw film of him playing the position.

  • Ginn didnt seem to have great lateral quickness, better straight line speed. Great hips allow you to move lets to right much better. He is more of a track guy, straight line speed. And if he didnt play offense as much we wouldn't have been as explosive as we were.

  • Always thought of Ginn as a poor man's Warfield. At Ohio State, Warfield was a shut down CB and a HB/Receiver with blazing speed but only so-so hands. Obviously they developed differently in the Pros, but I always saw Ginn with that potential. Sanders shied away from contact but was a shut down CB in the Pros. Don't know why Ginn never took it to the next level in his development. He could have been great at either position ... but never was

He was #1player in the nation also #1 cb he was shut down ...I think the reason he played wr is cause in high school he played every position possible

Ginn was an elite track star in the hurdles. He had the hips. I was just wondering about this the other night. Had he gone to another college he could have been another Deion Sanders. But at tOSU CBs have to tackle, and that wasn't really Teddy's strength.

  • I don't think he would have been a good CB in college. He started with that position group IIRC, and quickly moved over to WR because he wasn't going to see the field for a while at CB.

Watching him at OSU, personally I didn't see a major college CB at all. He had far more effect as WR and considering that he had a hard time picking up the nuances of WR, I dont see any evidence that wouldnt have been the case at CB either. YMMV, but I just dont think he would have been very good as a CB.

  • this whole article is wack an should be blocked. he was a top ten pick, so what he is not a great pro. was ryan leaf played out of position cause he was terrible in the nfl? i dont know why or what your motive is for this convo, but i would love to know?

  • Agree with all the comments. Do not see TG as a run support CB. I also wish that JT would not have taken half of his freshman year to figure out how to use him, at least as a punt returner.

  • Ginn absolutely was in the right position. I think he should've stayed his sr year for additional developmemt but his hands and route running are why he's struggling in the nfl. He could just as easilly change positions in the nfl if he chose.

  • he was used correctly... Duane is right in the fact that he wasnt physical enough to play corner. Look at the difference in bodies between him and malcom jenkins... night and day.

He shied away from contact on offense.. think of what it would have been like on D. Yes he is fast and would have never been beat deep however what we did with him on offense was spectacular.

Ginn made the other WR's around him better because of his constant threat of blowing the top off the D. You were FORCED to double cover him with a safety deep. That allowed us to run the ball more effectively. It also is what allowed T-Smith to distribute the ball so well to other WR's.

Further proof he wouldnt have held up on D... skinny ankles... look what happened when roy hall jumped on them. ;)

  • Ginn needed to be on the offensive side of the ball, so JT got that part right. I think they could of got him the ball in some more creative ways. It seemed it was mostly curls and streaks with the occasional end around. Maybe some flanker screens, shovel passes or even have him come out of the backfield....similar to Percy Harvin.

Ginn was an excellent playmaker for OSU, so you really can not complain at all about his production.

  • I am surprised at all of the criticism of his lateral speed, hips, and quickness. He was pure speed. He had amazing quickness and lateral movement. Did everyone forget his punt return vs mich or the many other spectacular moves he made to get free. I have never seen a more explosive player at osu and doubt I ever will. In fact, I have only seen a few players in the nfl with his type of sheer speed and elusiveness. Eric Metcalf was very similar in cleveland. He is not underachieving because of his speed, quickness, or hips. If the nfl was a flag football league, he would be my all time top draft choice.

It's just a "what if" thread that generates good conversation. If you don't enjoy good conversation about football then leave.

I have speculated on this topic in the past and I just can't see Ginn ever tackling anyone. On the other hand, recruiting services had him rated as the #1 CB in the country out of HS so it's hard to tell...
