An uncommittable offer reminds me of a friendship ring. In recruiting, it's almost a way of saying "you're my Plan C, or maybe even my Plan B. You've got potential, and if you work hard, perform well in camp, and I have room at your position, maybe we'll consider whether you make the jump to Plan B or Plan A. Otherwise, if my Plan A at your position is still unsettled in December, I will tell the world we have documented proof we were recruiting you nine months ago."
