ESPN NBA Mock Draft

It's insider so I apologize if you don't have that, but just wanted to point out that Ford doesn't even have Deshaun going in the first round. I just don't see how this kid will come out without being guranteed to be a first round pick, when everybody knows he'll be top 10-15 talent next year if he stays. If he plays all of next year like he's played this March, he'll be in the national player of the year discussion.

Not one mock draft has Thomas in the first round, and many do not have him in the first two, even with this tourney performance.
Love how Thomas has played, but he has work to do on his foot work, speed, using his right hand and defense. He is very inconsistent at times and many times has spurts where he coast.
Outside of a few rumors I have heard, Thomas needs to come back.
If Matta made him the main go to guy on offense and he got the pub for OSU and averaged over 20 a game, while improving in the areas I noted above, Thomas could potentially be a lower lottery pick and make a ton of more money staying for those very reasons.

  • I checked several sites and he is nowhere to be found. Surprising since he is such a natural scorer imo, which you cannot teach. Unless he goes for 30 each night this weekend he may be headed back. Otherwise, he would be looking at low second round selection (if any) with an all expenses paid trip to Europe. Average 20 points next year and he would be a lottery pick. I'm starting to feel better about him staying.

  • He has gotten a lot better over the last month. I bet once the scouts get a good look at his video lately that their opinions will change. His passing and defense have improved exponentially over what they were in the middle of the season.

  • Thomas needs to improve his ball skills.. He hasnt shown he can handle the ball very well and create for himself. He gets a lot of his buckets from spot up jumpers, and working his ass off around the rim getting garbage buckets. There arent many garbage buckets in the NBA like that and he isn't athletic enough to keep up with SFs in the NBA right now. His defense needs to improve and his ability to put it on the floor and create. Everytime he dribbles I hold my breath becaus he doesn't look comfortable. If he left, it would be a shame because 2nd rd money isnt garanteed and its no different than being a rookie FA because you still have to make the team. I dont want him to come back just for the team, I want to see him come back and improve his game like Sully did with his jumpshot.

What made Daequan a first rounder and not Thomas ? Daequan still doesn't dribble the ball well, below average on defense and athleticism. His shot was better but not that much imo

  • I still don't see how Deshaun fits into the NBA to the point that he should leave after this year. There is no doubt in my mind he can carve out a niche career for himself as a bench scorer or stretch 4, but he is not the type of player that goes in the lottery. He is too small to play the 4 regularly and he is not athletic enough to guard NBA 3s. He should stay at least another year.

How do you change athleticism by staying a extra year? Jump shot yes, handles yes, athleticism? Naw

  • Unless you are a lock to be a stud at 6-8 and PF, you are going to get held back because of your size. 6-7 and 6-8 PFs tend to slip till the 2nd round and have to earn it. Not saying it is fair or not, but most late first round NBA picks that are for SF or PF are based on potential more than documented ability. And the taller/more athletic guys are the first picked in the mid-late first round.

    +1
Plus they pick based on potential. If Koufas and Mullens can get drafted so can Thomas.

He's the same player as the freshman they took out of Texas last year. Makes no sense. Might as well sign Hickson off the scrap heap.

Daequan was a natural SG, Thomas has a SF body but not a SF game. He has a PF game but can't bang with a guy like Sully who will be a PF in the NBA. Thomas really doesn't have a position in the NBA right now, he is tweening between SF and PF and just doesnt have the handles to play SF yet. He never takes anyone off the dribble because he cant. And he isnt the guy who will be running off a lot of screens either. He isn't athletic enough to keep up with SGs either. Just imagine, Tmac is 6'9 and plays the 2, Thomas is 6'7 and cant play the 2. He has to get them ball skills tight before he can be a 1st rd pick or even relevant in the NBA.

I agree with you. I'm not saying his athleticism will improve, I'm just saying he is not going to be a high pick so might as well hang out for a year, put up monster numbers as the absolute go-to guy and hope your stock improves because of it.

Koufos and Mullens were both 7 ft tall. Thomas is undersized, big difference.

Teams draft those guys because they think they have all the physical tools they can make them better basketball players. No NBA team can teach Thomas to grow 3 inches.

    Buckeye_Doug

  • Agree that DT doesn't have a legit NBA position right now. I think if he improves his outside shot and his ball handling he could be a pure scorer, Cedric Ceballos, Corliss Williamson (the sac king's version), Thad Young (not as athletic, better shooter) Antawn Jamison type. A guy that comes off the bench with the mandate to just fill it up. The more I think of it, the more I think the Jamison comparison makes sense as his ceiling.

As for Sully, I think he has some of the same issues when it comes to height and athleticism. He has improved over the last month however, his overall game. Where he was previously forcing the issue and struggling as a result (getting blocked, frustrated, etc), he is now playing a really smart game. He's seeing the floor, protecting the backboard by boxing out and rebounding, and taking good shots.

A month or two ago I didn't think Sully could be a meaningful NBA player. With the way he's playing now, however, I think he can be a poor man's Elton Brand or someone similar. The problem is, almost all undersized 4s make up for it by being super athletic and very good ball handlers (see paul milsap for example)...I would love to be proven wrong!

  • Thomas is not a first-rounder. If he comes out this year, monster mistake.
A year of scoring more than 20 would get him in the first round, after next year.

    Exactly right...

I want the Cavs to grab Harrison Barnes. The Cavs are sh*tty, but not sure if they are sh*tty enough to land Barnes.
