Elflein Aims To Represent Buckeyes

Future Buckeye Pat Elflein's long-term future is in football. But his short-term future includes a run at the state heavyweight wrestling crown ...

I'm surprised that article didn't mention that Nick Tavenello is an OSU wrestling commit. Big Pat will have his hands full if he gets Tavenello in the finals.

Agree. I was thinking the same thing.

  • Great, great attitude, which is sure to help him in wrestling, football and life. Pat's not afraid to work hard and compete, even if it means losing occasionally, because he knows the work and competition will pay off in the long run. Lots of kids his age have no concept of the future -- how the things they do today will make them better tomorrow. Elflein seems to have acquired that important wisdom already.

I don't know his parents, but I'd bet the ranch that Mr. and Mrs. Elflein are first class people -- it's not easy to raise a young man with this much maturity at such a young age. The Elfleins will be great representatives of Buckeye Nation.

    When in doubt, punt.

  • Sounds a little like a certain nose tackle currently on the team! Plus didn't Vrabel win state in wresting?

  • I think Elflein ends up to be a steal, and a heck of a center or OG on the OL for OSU.

What are the weights of both Elflein and Tavenello? Especially since Tav 'rassled' at 215 last year...

  • Luke Fickell was the best heavyweight in Ohio State wrestling history. He was 3x state champ and 2x Jr. National champ in freestyle. He would have been multiple NCAA champion if not for football. His dream was to be Olympic wrestling champ before football got to him.

Both Pat Elflein and Nick Tavenello, the OSU wrestling commit, are the heavyweights. Pat is much heavier than Nick but Nick is much skiller than Pat. Nick suffered a bad loss to nationally ranked wrestler from PA this season even though Nick is ranked higher than this PA kid. From the news, that loss is just a "bad". Nick is favored to win the states this year. Pat may have the chance to upset him if he can.

Edit: Nick Tavenello is ranked 5th in nation this season (Intermatwrestle.com), by the way.

Sounds like a great kid I wonder if Coach Meyer will be there or maybe coach Fickel as he was a great wrestler in high school

Pat told me that the staff is not allowed to watch him but Coach Fickell, in particular, has been a big supporter of his throughout the tournament. He's well aware of how good of a wrestler Fickell was.

Sorry about that, I was just focusing on Elflein in the article and I was unaware of Tavenello being an OSU recruit as well. So thank you for pointing that out to me! Now we all know.

285 pounds is the heavyweight division. Sounds like it's going to be a great match if they both make it to the finals.

  • ScUM is getting a kid named Taylor Massa probably the best wrestler in the country. He's ranked #1 in country and I don't think he's ever lost a match. He defeated Mark Martin (Ohio State commit) the #4 wrestler in the country in a meet this year that ST.Ed's won. Keep an eye on those two. I hear that the Massa kid is a once in a lifetime prospect....

No apology needed, I'm sorry if I sounded negative by the way I said that. I'm from Wadsworth so we are pulling hard for Nick T although if he doesn't win it I'm hoping it's Pat.

I'm not sure what Nick T is weighing now but he is a lot bigger than last year. That said, he will be giving up some pounds to Pat E.

TOSU just got a super commit from monroeville, Chris Phillips. Chris was heading for nc st before he changed his mind. He sat out for a year. Chris may be better than Taylor Massa. Keep in mind, Chris lost only once in hs and that was against Ed Ruth 3-2. Ed Ruth was a big ten champ And 3 rd NCAA placer as a freshman. So it shows how good Chris is.
