English Language Use And Abuse Here

  • In 1638 Milton wrote " I am inclined to believe, that when the language in common use in any country becomes irregular and depraved, it is followed by their ruin or their degradation. For what do terms used without skill or meaning, which are corrupt and misapplied, denote, but a people listless, supine, and ripe for servitude? In a degree that conclusion applies to some contributors here and certainly to one thread.

  • "I don't care if they lay me off either, because I told, I told Bill that if they move my desk one more time, then, then I'm, I'm quitting, I'm going to quit. And, and I told Don too, because they've moved my desk four times already this year, and I used to be over by the window, and I could see the squirrels, and they were married, but then, they switched from the Swingline to the Boston stapler, but I kept my Swingline stapler because it didn't bind up as much, and I kept the staples for the Swingline stapler and it's not okay because if they take my stapler then I'll set the building on fire" - Milton Waddams

  • I see a message board as a place people just come to relax and share ideas about a passion they have for certain things ...

and not a place to worry about people being so uptight.

Its like going to the bar and talking to some friends about last nights ball game and someone over hears a possible F-bomb slip out.
Your in a bar ...who cares and mind your own f'n business.

Don't like something ....move on and show some tolerance.

  • I think that probably quite a few of us see incorrect spelling and grammar on Bucknuts boards. I have chosen never to comment when somebody uses the word "seen" instead of "saw", "to" instead of "too", etc. We are by our nature a pretty diverse group here at Bucknuts. Different educational levels, different ages and so forth. Sometimes the only thing we really have in common is our love of all things Buckeye. Additionally, some posters here craft their words very precisely while others don't concern themselves with it. As long as I can understand what someone is trying to say, I try not to get too hung up on how they say it.

Agreed. It bugs me, I have to figure out what is meant, reduces my enjoyment, but you cannot do more than is done. Frankly, I am surprised it has not been affected that much by Twitter abbreviations that would take twenty minutes to figure out for each statement.

Don't think you are alone, but you just can't change this thing. Not a priority for anyone with any control over "the masses".
