While I certainly agree this is a message board and it's expexted that most choosing to post their thoughts here really could care less about grammar and that's fine, however I do believe the OP was referencing a much deeper issue - one that the English language and how it's taught and used nowadays is going to hell in a hand basket. In many cases, certainly not all, in our society today ones grasp of proper grammar and depth of vocabulary will determine how far they advance in their professional careers. I experience first hand on a daily basis that people's English skills are continuing to diminish. For example, I read approximately 20-25 resumes on a daily basis. In doing so it is very clear that these applicants (many who claim to have a college degree) have extremely poor English skills. One applicant wrote his cover letter in the body of his email to me in one run-on sentence, with no punctuation, and no capital letters. It was just like a really long text message. I wanted to call him in for an interview just so I could slap him upside his head and then send him on his way.

What I'm basically saying is something needs to be done to improve grammar or we will just continue to get dumber as a country. I wonder if other languages are butchered as much as English is in the U.S.? Let me also state that a strong vocabulary and solid grammar skills are NOT necessary for everyone - I get that. The world needs UPS box handlers and truck drivers too and it's not vital for them in their chosen professions, but it's very sad to see so many college graduates not be able to put a proper sentence together.
