FRR: Why Is The Defense Inept?

  • I think he meant Nathan

    Geauga_Buckeye

  • Luke just looks like he is in over his head. When things aren't going well you change things up and see what happens. No pass rush then blitz, do line stunts do something. Fickell makes no adjustments whatsoever. He is clueless what to do. I find it hard to beleive he will be here next year if things dont get straightened out real quick. And where is Withers????

  • dave biddle i hope youre right about pelini id love for nebraska to let him go right to ohio state! what makes you so sure he wont keep his job tho? im just skeptical nebraska dumps him this year.

It shouldn't take stud LBers to play behind an excellent DL with excellent CB play on the outside. I'm amazed anyone would think the problem is personnel vs schematic.

Seriously? smh It is for sure the personnel. The problem is, because the D-schemes are so bad, it only exposes just how BAD the personnel IS and it ALSO makes the defense even worse.

mrtbuck..pretty good...The game with Purdue this week is a great time to experiment with a true 5-2 defensive front..This will eliminate the need to have three LBers in the game(best two)will give a much better pass rush (not allowing the QB to just take his time!) which will take some pressure off the DB's..This seems a better plan than just same ole defense scheme each week!! The description of "insane" Just keep doing the same thing week after week and expecting a different result!

I like the thought you have. BUT a 5-2 is wide open for being gashed by a spread offense and quick passes. Makes the LB blitzes and pressure useless.

    ok lets here your scheme

    THE WINNING DEFENSIVE SCHEME

MrT, I know you weren't speaking to me, but this would be an effective scheme:

    1) Put Roby and Howard in man press coverage. No cushion. Bait the QB to throw. Remember, if pressure is coming, he doesn't have time to wait for the receiver to get 25 yards down the field AND he has to get rid of the ball so accuracy is diminished. Put 8 in the box regularly. You can drop them out if need but, but put them in the box to begin with.

    2) While the QB is licking his chops at the thought of 1-1 coverage, blitz strategically. No need to bring everyone, but bring zone blitzes and safety blitzes. Be relentless. Bring it on every down.

    3) Wear the QB down and get multiple hits on him and multiple sacks. If it's in his head, he'll struggle.

    4) By bringing vertical pressure on every down, the chances are, most running plays WILL get blown up. Just have to maintain gap coverage.

THIS IS KEY: Everyone knows adjustments end up turning games around, so you have to set up the offense and be a step ahead with your defensive scheming. Tweak the defense by showing the same blitz schemes as earlier in the game, but occasionally drop a DE into coverage - or blitz a LB right past a dropping DE. The offense will make the following adjustments, which will play right into our hands.

    5) Once the opposing OC and QB get used to seeing pressure and man press coverage, start dropping a DE like Spence in the short flat and into coverage and INT's should be on the menu. QB's hate when DE's with athleticism drop into coverage. The natural adjustment to blitzing is to begin to swing passes out to the flat or check downs over the middle - BUT - when you bring pressure, the QB doesn't have TIME to check down. Passes HAVE to be short passes, because there is no time for a 5-7 step drop. If they do, you're looking at sacks. If they play into your hands with short passes, you're looking at disruption and confusion as the QB doesn't know who will be in coverage and if he's trying to get rid of that ball before Spence pounds him, you can expect mistakes to abound.

Stunts would be nice, but they are only effective in two situations: (a) a 5-7 step drop, usually 3rd and long, or (b) running plays inside the tackles. Stunts are not as effective against run plays outside the tackles.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe we blitzed on both big plays, the long touchdown run right up the middle and the long Shane Wynn pass. We at least were up in "agressive" coverage. I don't know if this defense has the horses to play agressive, whatever that means. The word "aggressive" is just like the word "physical." If you are good, you are aggressive and physical, If you are bad, you aren't aggressive or physical enough. The key is to have the right defense called. Good defenses mix up "aggresive" and droping back into coverage.

The reason we allowed the big run wasn't due to overly aggressive play calling. It was missed assignments and Roby/Bryant (don't remember) wasn't where he should have been. Plus, the D-line got blocked well. That's what sprang him into the secondary. Problem was our safeties weren't SAFE. They were out of position.

The reason we allowed the long pass to Wynn was ALSO because of poor execution and being in the wrong position. Klein made the mistake of "following" the drag receiver. In his position, you have to see that drag and step up into it. It becomes an INT or a batted pass, or a quick tackle. The problem was magnified because once again, our safety - Bryant I believe - was out of position. He made the mistake of coming inside the hash and his responsibility was not in or out of the hash, but deep. He allowed the drag receiver to get outside of him, just like Klein did, and he followed Wynn all the way to the end zone.

JEEZ, the more I break this down, the more elementary it is to me. I don't understand how they can't fix this. IT IS FRICKING FIXABLE!!!

Meyer just said in his presser that Perry and Williams were hurt, and Marcus and Perkins are not grasping the defense yet. Also needed leadership on the defense. That is why he pulled in Boren (yes, it was apparnetly Meyer's call).

I am DUMBSTRUCK if Marcus and Perkins are not grasping the defense yet. Here's the defense. Sit 8-10 yards deep, wait... wait... wait... chase the RB to the end zone.

So I guess Urban needs your number so you can take over the D because you know so much more than Fickell & Withers who have how many years of college & NFL coaching experience????

You don't have to be a coach to understand how a defense works, genius. How are all those "years of experience" working out for the 'Silver Bullets' these days... Never mind. No need for you to answer that. Everyone on this board will answer it for you. Hold my calls and let me know when Fickell is calling.smoke

Do you seriously think its that simple to fix things? Do you really think you're seeing things that the coaches haven't? Is it maybe possible that you don't really know the whole story about what the problems have been with the attempts to fix the defensive shortcomings? When things seem so obvious you can bet they're not.

Didn't say you weren't right about those two plays, I am saying our defensive problem is more complicated than firing Fickell. Did you not hear what Urban's reasoning were??? He said the have fine coaches but EVERYONE needs to get better and that we are thin as hell in the back 7, PLUS, are frosh LBers are lost. It's scheme, philosophy, attrition and youth that is making our defense as difficult to watch as our offense was last year...

I didn't say it was easy. I said it seems more elementary every time I go back through it. If you're disagreeing, then tell me what the problem is with the defense. Buehler.... Buehler... I thought so.
