Fickell interviewed at Pitt yesterday

Just confirmed it through a well-placed source. Iowa State's Paul Rhoads, Wisconsin's Paul Chryst, Alabama LB coach Sal Sunseri, Baltimore Ravens asst Teryl Austin and Ron Zook are also believed to be candidates.

Dave,
This is going to sound real stupid, but is Fickell interviewing for experience reasons, is he really that interested in becoming a HC? If so, has he thrown his hat into any of the other vacancies??

Good for Luke! I think he hasn't put himself out there enough. I'm sure Pitt may go in a more "established" direction. But he needs to branch out if he is ever going to develop into the HC he needs to be. However, a season under Meyer wouldn't hurt him.

I can't answer exactly what Luke is thinking, but my guess is that you don't turn down an opportunity to interview at Pitt when you're in his shoes. That said, I don't think Fickell is going anywhere. I think Paul Rhodes would be a great hire for them. My question is whether he would be willing to leave ISU. But with his offensive coordinator already leaving for Ohio State, maybe he thinks it's time to go. Iowa State-to-Pitt is kind of a lateral move though. Pitt will have to pay him a lot.

Dave -
While I am extremely happy for Luke because he is a great man, I can't help but think how this effects recruiting. Fickell is OSU's most dynamic recruiter (other than Urban; obviously) and the current commits / prospects love him. Do you think this effects recruiting this year? I really hope OSU is able to retain Fickell. I love the guy.

Im not into the Fickell hype, I honestly believe we could get someone who would be a better d coord and recruit just as well if not better.
I'm hoping he gets the job so withers can fully run this thing.

That place is not a good destination for an HC, esp. a young guy trying to make a name for himself. A BCS school sandwiched between OSU, UM, and PSU (not as much of a factor now)...having to recruit against the ACC and rest of the Big East. That's not good. So, they end up getting kids that are borderline MAC kids and whoever else...that's not good.

With that in mind, I do think that if there ever was a time to take the Pitt job, now is the time. With PSU in shambles, a new coach could clean up in state and capitalize.

It's hard for me to say ISU to Pitt is a lateral move. ISU has no history, minimal recruiting base, is in a small city, and in a conference on life support. Pitt on the other hand is in a cool town, great school, great local talent in a state where the other top school is in disarray. Pitt is going to a vibrant conference that they can realistical
ly compete for titles in. There are better situations, but I'd say Pitt is a much better job.
Personally hope Fick stays...not only to keep the traction he has with recruits but for his abilities and history at tOSU
