For those worried about Direct TV Rain Out

  • I have never had a rain out last longer than than 10 minutes when I had power.

In central ohio. how long have you had power and not TV?

    Just saying.

  • They told me I have to wait all the way until Tuesday afternoon to get a service call here in CBUS. Unreal, what horse sheet from DIRECTV.

It usually takes a severe electrical storm to knock out my satellite. Usually it knocks out the cable too.

Cable is the same as satellite. They just have one big dish and the hard lines from it. Direct TV just makes everyone their own cable company in a mini sense of the way and eliminates the need to lay all that line. I've experienced more outages from cable than I ever have from a dish.

  • Got rid of dtv because of outages. The looked at it three times and it still went out too often. It may only be out for 10 mins but another 5 to reload and that is enough to piss anyone off in a football game. If it happens twice in one game then you are lost. Cable sucks too, but haven't had one outage. It is a dish but the dish is way way way more stable and longer.

Something was wrong with your equipment or setup. Perhaps you had a tree or a building blocking your signal. If that is the case then yes cable is probably going to be better for you. I've had DTV for......7 years and never experienced what you have described. Suffice to say it is probably an isolated incident.

  • 18 years with DirecTV after 15 years with cable. I'll never go back to cable. I get calls all the time from my neighbors with cable asking if my TV is working and I tell them it's working just fine. One by one they are switching to DirecTV.

  • I live in the western mountains of North Carolina; the only services available that carry the Big Ten Network are DTV and Dish. The problem I have...is the tree coverage in the mountains will not permit the service to be reliable...outages constantly!!! But, cable isn't offered, and even if it were they wouldn't carry BIG Network. So believe me, I'm aware of the frustration that comes with TV issues. I know this may not pertain, but I needed to vent. These people down here only care about basketball; nobody understands my trials and tribulations when it comes to "missing out" on a Buckeye game due to DTV outage!

I camped near Linville Gorge years ago and brought a generator, DTV dish, TV and receiver and got the OSU-Purdue last second FG win . It's all about canopy.

My problem w/ DTV is the cost. Den, bedroom and family room..HD receivers..2 DVR's with just the basics you need to enjoy TV...expanded tier but no movie or sports channels..and I pay $110/mth. It has steady been rising since I re-upped 5-6 yrs. ago.

It's a great Saturday when the Bucks are on ABC. I have an OTA antennae and there is nothing clearer than an OTA HD picture. Puts even DTV to shame...and its' free.

My ideal situation is that the B1G joins up with NBC, not FOX. FOX is now invested in B12 and Pac 12...why isn't there the same crying argument that we hear about espn and SEC?

NBC has the extra channels, they dump ND and they have the whole day free to show nothing but B10. If B1G signs a deal w/ FOX..they'll be fighting for more TV slots than espn.

I got DTV because of the BTN...and neither DTV nor BTN are really worth the money; but hey..you can't take it with you.

  • What would be your costs on local cable, and what would be the options?

Abc owns espn. Just an FYI

  • I think that dtv is the gold standard. I love all of the sports networks available at the price that I spend. Even with all of the wind and rain the last few days the signal was fine. Except for when my power was out.

  • For those with Direct TV, what do you do for internet? Im looking into getting direct tv for nfl Sunday ticket. I've always had time warner, because that's what my parents had and that's all that been available at my apartment. Now that im moving into a house next month, im thinking of switching, but worried about internet cost and the fact that I have a lot of trees by the new place

  • I use tw cable and I get a 2 MB download and 768 k upload. The speed seems to be fine for everything except for modernwarfare online play. It costs me 30 bucks a month. Plus my dtv package costs me roughly 70 but I have lots of add ons and extra tv's and whole home dvr capacities. So all together I have a great package for 100 a month.

  • Another question I have because im looking into getting Direct TV. How bad does ice and snow effect the dish?

  • i've had direct tv since it came out. i've got hd dvr's in the cave, the living room, and the bedroom, in the last ten years i've lost the signalmaybe six times, that's not bad compaired to warner cable and their outages every other month. also i keep the cost down by not having any premium movie channels. you can download any movie free and pipe it thru your tv . this allows me to have every premium sports channel without going broke. i wouldn't go back to cable if they paid me to.

Just spray the dish with some PAM and you will not have a real problem. I think I have had an ice problem 2x in the last 5 years or so, and that was due to a heavy ice storm each time.

    Never had a snow problem.

It takes a lot to effect it. But you can just clear it off and its fine. Most times the snow doesn't even stick to it. Its the wind you would need to worry more about. That dish can act like a big sail. If it isn't securely fastened, it can move enough to interrupt or degrade your signal.

My trick to counter that is to score the bar of metal on both pieces so if the wind shifts it, you don't need to get a compass out and align it. You can just line of the scores on the metal you made. Thats only a factor if you don't have it fully secured.

I don't really have much choice in internet. Well I do have a choice but for me it is no choice.

    1. Cox communications.....Its the big local telecommunications conglomerate that has phone, cable, and internet. Much like time warner
    2. Clear....cell phone tower internet. Its complete crap in my area.

Thats it. I wish Cox had competition because they put a choke on their internet and make it so you have to pay more for more speed. Its bullshit.
