I say rod smith sees the field plenty this fall
I know the hockey situation (if true) doesn't sound very good in regards to a coach being asked to give a player a scholarship.
However, as the article mentioned, if the coach had won more, I doubt it would have been the situation. I'm seeing it this way:
1. Coach wasn't winning enough and the Athletic Dept. wasn't sure he was the long-term solution.
2. George Gwozdecky (He of two national titles at Denver) was available.
3. Perhaps the fact coach wouldn't offer the Jr. Blue Jackets goalie was something everyone thought was a ridiculous gaffe in terms of talent evaluation by the head coach and given #1, decided "This guy doesn't have what it takes, time to make a change."
Regardles, if George Gwozdecky takes the hockey job, we are in for a golden age of hockey at OSU.
ps. I played at the old OSU Ice Rink for the Columbus Capitols back in the 80s. It is small and old and a dump, but I have fond memories from there.
Hockey most certainly needs an upgrade. BTN also needs to make it a broadcasting priority next season when it becomes a B1G sport.
The deal with the schollie happens all the time. If you're a coach and not winning titles you'd best listen to your boss.
As for Smith... My take is that this is the boarding house = rumor, gossip and innuendo and I LOVE IT thanks STEVE. That said I don't recall Urban calling out a player in a positive way who didn't deserve it. On multiple occasions he has said Hyde is #1 by a mile, then Rod and then "the other two guys".
My take is the source was referencing frustration that there are still mental lapses. Even few and far btwn it's too many.
I still think he sees the field a lot early, and if he starts to flash his physical tool set like he did last yr and can avoid fumbles he will get touches. The opportunity for him to be the starting Tailback is still very much within reach for him IMO.
With Minnesota and Wisconsin coming in, there will be plenty of Big Ten hockey on BTN. It will be a priority on Friday nights for sure.

I don't know why we get upset or surprised by Smith's actions. Everyone outside of Gee knows he is a sneak and incompentent. Might as well admit as long as Gee turns his head we are stuck with Gene. I would imagine that Gene has over Gee's head the fact they both knew about Tatgate and Gene saved his arse by talking JT into taking the fall for both of them. Gene makes such a big deal about all the teams tOSU offers but fails to mention not all of them require adequate funding.
The closest that I will ever get to a Buckeye ring or Gold Pants. Saw it sold on e-bay April 29, 2011 for $8500.
_ichigan Football would be Minnesota without The Great State of Ohio!! O-H! I-O!
