I love Gordon Gee, and I'm proud to have him as my president!

I agree, they were both bad journalism.

I obviously agree with his sentiment, but in order to make his point he needed to be much more specific about what he meant; i.e., use examples of the reckless nature of the articles (i.e., the Sporting News article was written by a jilted Florida fan). Instead, people just glancing though the article are going to think its just sour grapes.

This -- and trust me, they already think it is sour grapes. And let's not kid ourselves...had Meyer gone to Penn St or ND, we'd believe nearly everything Hayes wrote in that article.

While we all know....again.....what Gee was intending to say.

On the plus side he sounded sincere and irritated. On the minus side, he sounded petulant.

I've read both articles numerous times (and I really suspect Pres. Gee read both from beginning to end, even if only skimming, and it's been a bit since the SI article came out). Having been a j-school grad and professor (not at OSU) and been in the communications business almost as long as The Sporting News (ok, just a bit of a stretch there, but sure feels like it), and also having experience with both the OSU and the UF programs to some degree, and with other universities and publications, President Gee is, essentially, correct. The Hayes article, IMVHO, was a hack job. I wouldn't have given one of my senior journalism students too highly a grade on that one, mainly as Hayes didn't really do a lot of in-depth reporting on his own. And, yes, as someone else pointed out in the Lantern comment section, in this case Hayes' background is pertinent to potential bias and, as a good rule of thumb, should have been included in the article, either by him or by the publication. The Lantern didn't do itself any favors by quoting two student sources who may be wonderful students in their field and bright as all get out, but insofar as this topic is concerned, seemingly may as well have been Leno "Jay-Walk" intercepts.
