Greatest Upset You Have Witnessed?

  • Got to thinking of this topic after watching the Buckeye-Winthrop game last night. Be it organized kids games, high school, College or Pro what is the most unbelieveable Upset game or match you have, yourself witnessed?

Mine revolved around my son's soccer team when he was playing several years ago on a traveling team when he was probably 12-13 years old. My son's team was undefeated, and the "toast" of the league....going tinto the final weekend, they were something like 15-0 and were playing the "bottom feeder" of the league, who was 0-15, and a pretty much hapless, rag-tag team. Their coach was a first year coach, and really did not know the game well.

We played them on a Saturday and beat them 7-0 in a laugher, our coach playing everybody but the water body in an easy victory. We were to play them the next Saturday on the same field, and me like most of the victorious parents, knew itwas going to be another long boring contest and we kicked "butt" again to end the season, before the tournment.

That week, the hapless team, lets call them the Eagles, got together at the coaches house for pizza, and a "re-dication" to finish the season strong, if possible. The coach personally bought each of his kids a hat and matching shirt that said something like"Victory is Possible-Never, Ever Quit"., and he had a pep talk wiht them, challenging them each to do better.

That next Saturday they beat us 7-0. I set there stunned as they continually outplayed us, time after time, and fought like caged tigers in the match. My son's team missed goal after goal opportuntities, and the Eagles held tough...kids scored their first goal of the year aganist us...my son and I have talked about this game, still after some 28 years, as we still cannot figure out how his team lost to those guys, and were even shutout! I ca't imagine what that victory did to those winning kids as they learned a real lesson of what they were made of.

I personally learned a big lesson from that loss, as I went on to coach young people......:Never, Ever under-estimate your opponent, Never." Their mindset was victory-ours was complecency and un-prepardness..both mentally and physically an we got our butts kicked....

Can You Recall a Great Upset You can Share?

  • Easily Cincinnati beating the Ron Dane's Wisconsin team. Cincinnati went on to go 3-8 and Wisconsin went on to win the Big Ten and go to the Rose Bowl. Ron Dayne went on to win the Heisman Trophy. Easily the biggest upset I've seen in person.

    1. The MSU vs scUM " one second" game.. I still laugh at them crying over how the officials sprinted to set the ball etc.. Was in that corner of the end zone at the time..

    2. Runner up. Iowa losing to Northwestern State in first RD of NCAA tournament in Auburn Hills, MI Think it was #14 vs #3

As for watching games on TV in general,

NC State beating Houston... Villanova vs Georgetown, both NC games in college hoops.

  • My best friend growing up in columbus happened to be a Michigan fan who's dad had season tickets to scUM football. The one game they decided to take me to happened to be the App State game. I sat in Michigan stadium with a red #7 OSU jersey on watching UM fans around me cry after the game. Not just the greatest upset ive witnessed, it was also top 5 moment in my life.

  • What were the odds of The Reds sweeping the Bash-Brother led A's in 1990? Probably not too good; I'd call that a GREAT upset.

THIS!! I can still see Iron Mike grabbing for his mouth piece......tragic!!

  • Yeah id say Douglas tyson would be tops. I was just a 10 yo kid and Tyson was so dominant and no one really knew how his life had spin so out of control so we all thought he'd crush him by round 3.

    Then osu vs miami.
    Reds sweeping the A's.
    1998 sparty beating osu.

  • (this might sound pathetic but its a story worth sharing). in 1997 i was in 7th grade in Allen, TX and we were up 30-0 in a football game late in the 3rd quarter against a school from the neighboring McKinney, TX and they came back and beat us 34 to 30. needless to say we were run ragged the day after during practice.

  • In person...

    1. I would have to say UAB upsetting #2 seed Kentucky here in Columbus.
    2. Princeton upsetting UCLA in the first round at Indy. (Reggie Miller was a Pacer at the time and at the game. They showed his face on the big screen with his UCLA hat on and pointed #1 to it, the ENTIRE RCA Dome broke out in a chorus of boos.)
    3. Xavier w Pete Guillen upsetting Georgetown w/ Mourning and then knocking out Purdue w/ Big Dog in Indy.
    4. Notre Dame with LaPhonso Ellis and David Rivers as a 20 point dog vs #1 Missouri and Doug Smith. Mizzou has some arrogant fans talking massive shit pregame. So my Father and his friend the entire game leaned over to each other saying, "I didn't think it would be this close" (ND scored the first 21 points and the lead never went under 20 the entire game)
    5. UVA's upset of UNC and J.R. Reid in Lexington to go to the Final Four.
    6. ND's upset of Miami in 1989. My Father had extra tickets the week before, the Stanford game. He starts talking to an old man in line behind us and he asks my Dad what tickets he was returning, he told him. My Dad then asks him, his reply, "I have 2 tickets for the Miami game that I can't go to b/c of my daughter's wedding." My Dad then replies, you don't have to go any further, what do you want for them?" The kind old man says, "face value".
    7. Tennessee down 28 to ND at halftime with Peyton Manning only to come back and score 31 straight in the 2nd half. Wind chill was about 10 below zero.

Closest to an upset...Nebraska at Mizzou. 2 good friend went to Mizzou and I went out to visit that weekend. We decide to buy student tickets for $10 each and would have to sit in the damn grass w/ boulders in end zone. Glad we did. Met a really nice Nebraska fan, die hard. Nebraska was down big at half time (couldn't remember the score) and he was packing up in the 3rd and I asked him where he's going? He said, we're done. This game is over, hats off to you guys, you played a great game. I said "Sir, this game is far from over and I've seen some crazy things happen before. You shouldn't leave." He said, "Nah, it's a long ass drive back to Lincoln, we're done." This was the ricochet pass in the end zone that a Nebraska player caught off somebody's ankle or foot. At least we were standing right there in THAT end zone to see the play. Talk about a depressing place to be that night! But the strip club made up for it!
