Handicapping the MLB battle

Really good post with a major nit.

"a) Grant steps up - takes over the roll and is "the man". Most of us have some doubts here based on past performance"

    This sems like pure folly.

He could beat out an injured Storm Klein who didn't play in the spring (injury) nor in the fall camps (beat down his gf). That is just too much for me to process.

Going from starter to seeing zero plays is concerning. I still wonder if there is more to it than what we see from the outside. Did coaches want him to solely work on his position and not have him take time away to do special teams? I know the way to the field is through special teams with Meyer, but possibly Grant is an exception right now.

  • We must fill two spots – one outside and one inside. I think that must be taken in account. Shazier is too much of a game changer on the outside. You don’t move Roby to safety cause we’re weak there. The coaching staff didn’t give us any inkling that it was possible last year. It won’t happen this year.

We need a middle linebacker for our defense to work. All of our success on the defense side of the ball over the course of the last 15 years have featured a middle linebacker. There is nothing that tells me that will change.

I came to my answer predominately by using the two factors below.

#1. SPEED. While Boren proved me wrong last year, the future of this team defense is speed. It is important in the middle as well. We have recruited this very way. We want to get to the ball with explosion.
The past two recruiting classes have been very strong, with 6 guys rated over 94 on 247. They are speed guys, with the only noted MLB (Mitchell) being a sub 4.4. All of these guys have the size to play the position effectively (within the 10 lbs that MM could add if needed).

#2. LEARNING CURVE. If you look at our successful MLB in past – Laurinitis, Hawk, Homan, Wilhelm – it was in their 2nd or 3rd year that they showed effectiveness on the field. This is the nature of the beast at LB. It is a complicated position, especially transitioning from high school to college. There are always outliers, but I am basing analysis on history.

Here are candidates I am eliminating from contention:

    Luke Roberts – 6’1, 225
    -#1
    Mike Mitchell – 6’4, 220
    -#2
    Trey Johnson – 6’2, 220
    -#2
    Jamal Marcus – 6’2 , 225
-He was an end in high school. I believe he is an edge guy – outside all the way.
    Curtis Grant – 6’3, 235
-While I hope I’m wrong, don’t think the lightbulb is going on.

So here’s who we are left with:
    Cam Williams – 6’1, 225
-Son of an NFL Player, so he has the pedigree. Had 120 tackles senior year in high school. National Honor Society.
    Josh Perry – 6’4, 240
-Played exclusively on the outside last year when he got in. Recorded 70 tackles his senior year. Extremely athletic – long jump, hurdles, 400.
    David Perkins – 6’2, 220
-Another extremely athletic guy. Running back in high school. Had a 103 tackles – Senior year (22 for loss).

My money is on Cam Williams in the middle, with the others-Perry, Perkins and Marcus, battling for outside job.

I still don't understand the Bauserman over Miller uproar. A senior starting over a freshman isn't all that crazy of a thought, especially with a new head coach. If that was all on Fickell for that decision, then Klein over Grant should fall on Meyer, it's the same concept. Either way it is in the past.

Perhaps Grant didn't actually "lose" the job. After all, Klein was a senior - and Boren was another.... We all know how Tressel and staff (see Fickell) loved them some seniors. If such was the case, Grant may be a very angry man.

You really have me scratching my head after reading this.

We return two starters at safety, landed the best DB class in the country and one of the best safeties. Who even hinted at moving a CB who is a future first round draft choice to safety? I'm sure this isn't even a topic during coaches meetings.

I think you're to fast to eliminate Mitchell and Johnson. Everything I have heard about Johnson is "student of the game". He's the one freshman I think has the best chance to come in and make an impact. He's smart and will learn quick plus we need two LBs. I think Mitchell and Johnson are going to get early playing time and if they grasp what is going on, I think they will be starters before to long. As fast as Boren stepped in and made a difference, I can't see eliminating Mitchell and Johnson as first year starters at some point.

Grant will get first crack at it. In all essence the job is his to lose first.....no doubt. TJ and Mitchell will both get a crack, but Grant will get the most reps with the 1's this spring...

Senior over freshman at quarterback is what I meant. Grant was the starter before Klein was suspended. Meyer and Fickell both said that in order for the defense to be what they want they needed Grant to be the starter.

    luthershot 8

  • I think we should move Grant to DE. It's not happening at LB. To not even see flashes is alarming.

I'm not ready to count out any of the freshmen (now soph) LBs from last with the exception of Luke Robert. I look for either Boom Perkins or Camren Williams to step up and take the spot. I know Duane is not a fan of him because he is a drag down tackler, but I love his instincts He's the type of player that I think needed to RS. I think Trey Johnson has a great chance to get in the rotation with his football knowledge. While I think Mitchell will be a good one, I don't think he plays that much as a freshmen.

I agree with Urban that we need to recruit players who can step in right away, but not everyone is going to be physically ready to make an impact. I'm excited for camp to start.

Neither guy is built to play Mike.

Marcus is built like a brick s--t house.

However he is another example of the staff trying to turn a defensive end/athlete into turn into a football player.

    DVo45

  • If Grant doesn't turn the corner, I would give the edge to Luke Roberts. The staff was impressed with his instincts last year in practices and he'll have one full year on any of the incoming freshman.

It is the elephant in the room.

We can't have a good D, or acheive greatness without it.

Frankly, it is a huge concern.

Not only will a player who has yet to play meaningful minutes need to step up, he will also be responsible for calling the D, getting us out of bad plays, etc.

I would like to hear from the true consigliaires.

I will submit my opinion later in the day as time permits.

What are the chances Mitchell or Johnson start? Neither is enrolled yet, so they'll be getting in later this year. Seems like it would be tough. Is moving Shazier to MLB a possibility?
