How Much Do You Tip..and Why?

  • hamham121 said...

I used to use the Mayo test. I would order a side of Mayo for my French Frys. If the Mayo came with the food I gave a bigger Tip if it didn't they got a smaller Tip. 95% of the time if the server wrote my order down I got my Mayo if the server didn't write it down I didn't get it. I don't do this so much anymore because I have quit eating so much Mayo.

We used to frequent 3 or 4 Bars around town. At the one Bar I always tipped the Bartender really good, after a couple nights of tipping really good, as soon as he would see me come in the door he would go get my brand of beer and have it waiting for me by the time I got to the Bar so that was well worth it.

This reminds me of a story. My wife and I used to go to this mexican place down the street once or twice a month during the week. We would usually get a couple of pitchers of margaritas at like $20 per (huge profit if you have not guessed). I once asked for some sour cream that did not come with my $15 fajitas and when I got the bill they charged me $2 for it. I asked the waiter and then the manager to take it off which they refused. I threaten to never come back and they still refused. I have never gone back into that place again and that was 15 years ago. The place is still there.

Got to thinking of this topic after looking at my year -end giving(2012) to church where we tithe 10%, and all of a sudden thought..wait a minute..I give 10% to the Lord and 20% to a waitress? That don't sound right..do it! HOW MUCH DO YOU TIP?

Not trying to be a Scrooge, we usually give between 15-20% to a waiter or waitress IF the service and the job they do is decent and they are friendly......I usually try to judge the person and think of "am I helping them"....if its an early breakfast, the bill is going to be small and so the tip would be small..but most of those waitresses and waiters are out early working hard becasue they really need it.......we cannot affort many fancy places so that is a different matter as one does not "want to lose face" by being a cheapo......my wife has all of a sudden goten real tough on the tips we give as she is looking at us being retired and what we really can affrord....I guess I am a sucker for the college students and we talk to them a lot, get their "story" and almost become friends at the meal..its hard to play a "Jack Benny" to them.....One thing I am in favor of is "ending a message" if coffee is not refilled, if requests are not filled(i.e. more iced tea please", etc....or if the food is not good....

Whats your Opinion? What have you Experienced?

You touched a nerve with me. I feel I am a generous tipper. I start at 20% and maybe more, maybe less, depending on service. However I do not consistently tithe my 10%.

I'm not big on New Year resolutions, but I may now have a new goal for next year.

  • I've worked in the restaurant biz a good portion of my working lif/career. I don't do it anymore because it is a hard lifestyle for a family. I have always tipped well. I still even catch myself paying attention to everything going on in the restaurant. For example, is there a couple big parties that just got seated? Which could slow down the kitchen. How busy is the bar? Could slow down drinks. Is the restaurant short staffed? This happens a lot more than you would think. Especially when big wigs don't like the labor numbers you are running. So they tell you to cut back on a server or two or three. Then what happens? Customer service takes a dive. Instead of a server having a 3 or 4 table section they may now have a four or 5 table section. Impossible to handle especially if the server gets a table of 6-8 along with 3 other tables of 3 or 4. I also don't blame the sever if the food sucks. It isn't their fault the kitchen screwed up. Don't forget that a server makes 3.70/hr either. Another rule of thumb to keep in mind is if you are going to "camp" out at a table for 3 hours be sure to compnsate the server for the time you sat there and caused them to miss out on making money. Especially on a Friday or Saturday night. Nothing is worse than Having a table sit for 3 hours and tip you on the bill which may be 10-30 bucks while the server knows they could have turned that table 3 times and made 3 times as much money. So if you do do that, don't be surprised if your drinks aren't refilled after all of your plates are cleared and your check is presented. Just my rant about the service industry. I look at it in the way that I could be making someone's day better by leaving them a better tip than they expected.

  • I tip 15% if the service just sucks, a week ago we had a fantastic server and we tipped almost 50% and was glad to do it.

  • How much do I tip: About 30 degrees.

    Why: Alcohol.

    biggrin

Seriously, 15-20%...because waitresses deserve to make a decent living too.

Edit: When I was a travelling consultant, I ALWAYS went to the bar/restaurant my fist night in a hotel. Got something cheap (drink/appetizer) and gave a $20 tip (likely about 300-400% tip). Word gets around and staff would knock over other customers to serve me the rest of my stay (when I'd still tip 30% or so).

  • I don't do the percentage thing... I do more of quality of service and how long we are at the restaurant.

Example, I've been at Chili's, Applebee's etc, walked in, ordered water and meal right off the bat, ate real quick and left a 5 dollar tip based on being there for 30 minutes and her being very nice and knowing I didn't have a lot of time.

Then I've also went to very nice restaurants, spent 2 hours there and left 5 bucks for shitty service and attitude, and I've left 100 dollar tips for the waitress who was very nice, knowledgeable about the menu, helpful etc etc...

So I've left 1% up to 100%...All up to the waiter/waitress

  • Many of the times I go out to eat, its' with a party of 6 or more and in this area..they tack on an automatic 18% for the tip, so that must be the industry standard. I tip 20% rounded up to the nearest whole dollar. I like my bills to be an exact number so I don't get screwed (like someone mentioned above)...always a whole number, never any cents. I tip for a hair cut a little more ...I leave $5 for a $15 cut...I really feel they make the least for the work they put in.

I throw a ten in the basket when it comes around at church when I go...roughly twice a month. In my mind, I make up for that by giving blood every 60 days..and I volunteer for Habitat for Humanity once in a while..3/4 gallon of blood a year to help my fellow man/womenkind is worth more than 10% of my salary.

I just wonder...and this is a whole different can of worms...what % of tips do service industry workers actually claim and pay their due taxes on? I have had freinds, acquaintences, and family members who have worked for tips and ALL will readily admit to not reporting all their income. I have a very good freind whom I worked with for 25 years and he recently retired. This is a guy who goes to church twice a week..tithes 10%, volunteers for charities, etc. I mean his name is Paul and his nicknmae is seriously, Saint Paul. Wel in retirement, he got a job as a bellman at the Radisson here in Myrtle. He said he makes 'killer' money in tips..both as valet and bellman. Even St. friggin Paul openly says he only reports what they make him report and pockets THOUSANDS of tax free dollars....and knowing someone like I know St. Paul..if he's doing it...100% of everyone else in the service industry is doing the same.
