How do the Big Ben, Kaepernick, Flacco, and Romo get overlooked?

  • Looking around the NFL, I can't figure out how so many QBs get overlooked in college. Even RGIII when he committed, went to lowly Baylor. Tom Brady went to SCum, but Drew Hensen was chosen above him. How could so many big time colleges overlook these guys? In Flacoo's case, I'd think someone would spot him at Deleware and hope he transferred to DI.

  • Big Ben only started 1yr of high school football and was almost offered by OSU......and flacco committed to Pitt but transferred to Delaware......

    Simple because football isn't hoops.

    In hoops, the top prospects around the country all play each other year around in the AAU circuits.

    In football, they only do those camps with shorts and T's.. Well it's hard to project if a great QB in Kentucky would be a great QB against the highest competition from Florida.

    Or if the 5 star QB from Pennsylvania would be a 5 star if playing in Cincy Catholic Leagues.

    It's hard to project in football because you can only rely on film or rely on your observations in the camps when they don't have pads on.

  • Some guys are just late bloomers. Look at how early recruits are getting offered. Many are deciding on a college by the end of their sophomore seasons. If you go to a small school and don't start (or dominate) by your sophomore year, schools aren't interested.

    Ironically, some people complain about us missing out on these late bloomers, but then complain when we offer a guy late in their senior season and say we're offering out of desperation because we missed out on the guys we've been targeting for two years.

  • Fist of all, this is a microcosm of the entire NFL. Just watch Monday Night Football and listen to where each player played his college ball. There are quite a few guys from mid-major schools. It's also how a player matures physically, mentally and emotionally during his time at college. It amazes me when i see players from non elite football programs excel in the NFL while the opposite also holds true (Vernon Gholston comes to mind). It's some sort of minutia.

    Regarding Flacco, he did start his college career at Pitt, but transferred to Delaware when he saw he really wouldn't have the chance to start over Tyler Palko. The more you know....

    Yes, no matter who we get, some people will always think about who we didn't (even if they are not highly regarded). It's why talent evaluation really makes a difference.

    Yeah OSUs talent evaluation has been the best in the country the last decade as shown by them being #1 in NFL draft picks in that time span. Thats why its kind of funny when people act like OSU is going to get better players now. Higher ranked maybe, but not better. No school had better players than OSU the last 10 years. I loved that they never went star chasing and went hard after guys they knew would be great and didnt care what scouting services or other schools said. Who NFL franchises draft is the true evaluation of talent a program has and OSU fans were extremely spoiled the last 10 years.

  • Future human performance is hard to predict. Alphabuck made a good point in that college scouts can't see top players going against each other in real games with pads. But even after college careers are done the NFL draft has lots of first round busts and undrafted success stories. Even after the players have been in the NFL for several years, the free agency market even has some risk.

  • Roethlisberger's case started in HS when he did not play QB until sr yr due to playing behind coaches son, OSU saw the athlete but felt he was a TE, Miami gave him the chance to play QB and play right away so he took it, so as you can see a number of factors can play intoal the evaluation of prospects
    Kind of off topic bu Heyward from Butler is Bball was one of the main reasons for the Butler run to the finals twice, he ended up at Butler because he played HS tennis and did not get to the AAU circuit much

  • I think in regards to quarterbacks it stems from how good they have to be to win. If you look at the qb's from usc that bombed it is a good example.

    These guys are surrounded by studs everywhere so they can manage the game and still look great doing it. Kids that are good at schools without superior talent really have to dominate even more so because of it. To me that makes them better in the long run because they're more used to having to dominate.

    Also you cannot excuse the hunger inside a man. A hungry man is striving to get better everyday. That's why urban said he wanted a hungry and an angry team.

    Its because these big schools are looking for QBs that are great athletes coming out of HS, that will be able to play quickly. Most of the guys that end up being big-time QB's in the NFL take a little bit longer to develop or might not be as impressive physically coming out of High School. I think the way QB talent is evaluated for the college game differs from the NFL, kids can get by on athletic ability in college whereas the NFL takes smarts, being able to read coverages and react etc. Obviously, there are QBs from big name schools that are successful, but a lot of these kids, that do not seem as gifted in H.S. go to smaller schools and develop their games. This is just my opinion, but I do think it holds some water.

  • They are like the tall chick in high school who played volleyball with braces. She used to like you but you just thought of her as a cool friend cause she was kind of gangly. She goes to college on a volleyball schollie, loses the braces and grows a huge set of cans. Then you see her at the 10yr reunion, smoking hot and married to a pretty big time MLB first baseman. And you are like, "What the fuck was I thinking!!!!!"

    Obviously I am still not over that one. Damn!!!
