Honest question...what was the perception in Buckeye Nation when Tressel was first hired? I know he was successful at Youngstown, but was he the obvious choice after Cooper?

I think his resume reminds me more of Earle Bruce than Jim Tressel. Bruce was an OSU grad, coached at two different schools (Tampa and Iowa State) and eventually won at both places (although overall having a record barely above .500). Of couse, that doesn't mean Hoke will be as successful (or unsuccessful, depending upon your expectations) as Bruce, but his resume is a better comparison...

  • Not worried in the least. This will end as soon as Michigan steps on the field and the fans realize that the help is playing high school football this year. This is the same Michigan team that did not provide a worthy challenge to a good team all of last season.

That was a once in a lifetme coach....and situation that worked. Don't compare some schlock to JT....

It would appear that with the players he will be bringing in in his first class that the level of talent will improve. He will be given a couple years to imporove the level of talent and improve the record.

The thing that is bothersome is taht they are getting some good players out of Ohio. It appears that they are outworking the OSU staff or are just better at the game than our staff is. Its a new game and we need to reexamine how we get the good players to come to TOSU.

"It appears that they are outworking the OSU staff or are just better at the game than our staff is."

Yeah, that's it. There are no "other circumstances" that might be affecting this next year's recruiting. smh.

+1. Tressel won quite a few national titles at Youngstown State, and he played in a few more national title games. That run at YSU, and rebuilding them into an elite title team every year for a good run was nothing Hoke could even compare.
This is no guess, Tressel turned down the Miami job, and Butch Davis got it. Davis even admitted it when he got the Browns job.
Tressel got asked by Oklahoma to interview and turned it down when Bob Stoops got the job.
Hoke has a career losing record, had Ball State on probation with a loss of schollies due to illegal benefits and was UofM's 4/5 choice after Harbaugh, Miles, Pelini and a few others turned down interview offers.
Tressel had power houses like Miami offering him the job while at YSU and Oklahoma wanting him as well, Hoke is sloppy seconds at UofM for the second time in three years.

  • The point that the media and scUM fans are missing is that while it is super that their 2012 class is looking good, they will not actually help the skunk bears in 2011. As a matter of fact, how many of them will be All B1G as true freshman? I would venture a guess that the best case for them is 1 (although that is not really likely).

The talent that they have on the field for 2011, 2012 and probably 2013 makes it almost impossible to compete (not just with OSU but also with Wisco, Nebraska, MSU, ND and potentially Iowa). It will be really interesting to see if Hoke can actually continue this recruiting momentum to build 2013/14 classes to compliment the 2012 clas while finishing around 4th in their division and with 5-8 wins per year. The cupboards are bare up there, and I really don't think that there will be much momentum going forward once the situation clears up in C-bus and the reality of how bad scUM is becomes apparent by week 10 this year.

Unless Hoke somehow quickly builds a Defense, The "northern Region Weasels" are doomed for another crummy year. I wrote a post a couple of weeks ago showing that they have the posibility to lose 7-8 games in 2011. That fact is not past the truth. If they lose to ND and San Diego State, the next 5 games(4 on the road), aganist Northwestern,Mich State, home / Purdue,Iowa and Illinois, and Nebraska and Ohio State they are well on their way. People coming into the B10 from outside to coach must learn about Defense and how it cominates B10 games....you can outscore MAC teams, but must stop dedicated, consistent B10 offenses that grind you down. Michigan does not have that kind of Defense. Robinson can score only so many points and he is also suseptible to getting hurt. My prediction 6-6 at best for scUM. Hold your nose Ann Arbwhore..nothing will have changed!

This is a really good point...the reason why is as follows: the Big10 is physical....by physical we mean your team takes a beating.....game in, game out, you take a beating...why is this so critical? Depth...plain and simple....teams with depth can weather the storm...look at defensive backfield losses last year.....Look whom we lost in the course of the season and then of course when Chim went down against one of the best passing teams in the country...Point here is, meatchickens don't have the depty so succeed on Defense....we do. This separates the men from the boys, IMO>

  • his defense will be better. Even though they don't have great talent, they won't be running that stupid 3-3-5 or whatever RichRod liked. For that reason alone, they'll be better. However, I don't think their offense will be as explosive. Robinson is great, but he'll be out of his element a little bit running a different offense.

I read somewhere that the offense Hoke was running this year is almost the same offense Robinson played in HS, so that will be interesting to see how that pans out. Obviously their defense has to get better but can it get rank 80th or better in the country remains to be seen.

  • What happens to Robinson, is usually this...at first he gets free, has some good and even spectacular runs, but as Defenses "make adjustments", his effectiveness soon wane and he is trying to scramble to get loose and make something happen. this causes mistakes....aganist the Buckeyes the past two years, he was basically a non factor in he 2nd half, and had some injury complications that sit him down. A lot of lesser teams, like MAC teams do not have the horses and smarts to adjust and they get dominated by him....If Hoke goes something like 5-7 or 4-8, they will want his head in Ann Arbwhore at the end of this season. He needs a Bowl season to carry on his wanted program!

  • Michigan will be in the hunt for the national title within 3 years. I don't think that they will be able to duplicte the recruiting success next year because they will have far fewer scholarships.

Tosu will be fine as long as they don't panic. Ohio has a better recruiting base than michigan and will get most of the best kids from ohio. Gene Smith has navigated Tosu through this ncaa mess and is now in a position to give Luke a long term deal.

I am looking forward to a renewed series between Tosu and Michigan when the games are the crown jewel of college sports and captures the imaginations of men and boys.

I agree with Spiels the only player on that D that could play here right now is Mike Martin. Not much talent there.

1 good recruiting class isn't going to put scum in the chase for the Natty.

Good coaching and recruiting players that fit your concept of team and scheme are vital to on field success. This notion that because a team is filled with kids that the Tosu never offered a scholarship to is not a rational one. How does tcu, boise state, oregon, wisconsin, iowa, etc remain competitive every season without bringing in national caliber talent on a yearly basis.

Michigan has one of the best offenses in college football. Mattison's defensive scheme will help the defense get better and with the infusion of talent over the next several years, the defense will not be a weak point for the team.

    Managing expectations

    - If michigan wins 8 or 9 games this year then the perception will be that the program is moving in the right direction under Hoke.

-If TOSU doesn't win 10 games plus then a civil war will break out in buckeye nation.
