I came, I saw, I pass.......

  • on Vonn Bell. thumbdown Superstar football players have some of their greatest games when a championship is on the line. Vonn Bell was a non-factor. I watched him for two and a half quarters and turn off the game. First of all, 90% of the time when he was on defense, he lined up 10 to 15 yards deep and when the ball was snapped his first reaction was to take 3 or 4 steps backwards. So now he is even further from the line of scrimmage. I only saw him make 2 tackles and one of those he wrestled the runner and finally spun him down. He hadn't hit anyone while I was watching and wasn't even close to a tackle except for the two above mentioned, which my grandfather could done better. He wasn't even in the picture on most running plays and I didn't see him defend any pases. He absolutely did nothing on the defensive side of the ball, zero, nothing, nada.

Offensively, he had one kick return for 30 yards, a pass catch for 30+ yards and that was it. He didn't appear like he wanted to hit anyone and when he was suppose to block, forget about it. I can't recall him hittiing anybody. After his initial hit, which made me want to vomit, he would just stand there, sometimes crossing his legs and observing what was going on. He looks the part but there was not talent obvious tonight.

He couldn't carry Tatum's, Doss's, Coleman's and a bunch of other Buckeye safties jock strap. IMO he is very overrated and showed no 'fire in his belly' in a championship game. I read the other topic on him and this game. Some of the people there agreed with what I have just described but they were others that were watching something else and have been reading his press clippings. We already have some 'badass' recruits that are better than this 'fake ass'. GO BUCKEYES

  • His teams DL was completely over matched the entire game..and from what I saw from him over the entire season I disagree with everything you have said...but you are entitled to your opinion and I will let you have your thread and opinion

yes, it is the only live game that I have watched. I have seen all his highlite films and that is exactly what they are highlites of him. They do not show anything that might cause concern in his evaluation. What I just observed live was a nationally ranked, top high school safty, in a Championship game and he did NOTHING.

There is not a position on defense, except possibly cornerback, that your first step is backwards. He took 3-5 steps backwards nearly everytime, that is a bad habit for a safety. You are to read and recognize and then react. He may have all the talent in the world but he didn't show any indication of that tonight and he did it in a game of such magnitude. I want you to know that I was, that is was, a big fan of his and looked forward to his being here but after what I saw tonight, he is not OSU 'silver bullet' material. GO BUCKEYES

Why do you think Urban still wants him then? Are you saying he is making a mistake?

So if Ed Reed is a non-factor in one game, which any safety has been at any level, do you pass on him. I have no idea what kind of team Bell faced tonight or what defense his coach had him in but I was a free safety in college and against passing teams I often was told to get 3 steps depth and read forward to make sure I wouldn't get with my eyes in the backfield and get beat deep. Again I have no idea what kind of offense Bell played against but man to watch a highly ranked kid for half a game and decide he sucks is a bit much.

  • I guess after reading this post, I am certain Urban has revoked his schollie and all.rumor I hate to hear this dribble from someone whom has never played the game... A safety ALWAYS takes a step back, that's why it's called saftey. Since Urban was at the game, I am somehow surmising he wants this kid and that is good enough for me. One thing the OP needs to remember when commenting like this, many kids and their families read these boards. You my friend come off as a so called expert but you're not. Let's just leave the recruiting to Urban. Next time you have an opinion. why not just say Bell didn't seem to have his best game or had little impact. One game doesn't make a season and this type of critical opinion of a kid we are desperately trying to land is poor taste. Just my opinion..

  • At the most basic level, we want our recruits to lead their team to state championship game, be responsible for their team winning that game, and post stats that scream superstar talent. The last two did not happen in this case, prompting the fan who started this thread to go away disappointed. Most of us here will go in major celebration mode if Urban gets Bell to commit to Buckeyes.

Well I don't think you could be more uninformed about the safety position. Watch an NFL game or two today and you'll see plenty of safeties with their first step backwards depending on what coverage they're in.

Also, the OSU coaches are one of the few staffs in the country that only watch entire game film, and not just highlight tapes. I imagine they have a much more well rounded opinion of him than you do after watching one game.

Do you think everyone on the '06 team was worthless since they got outmatched in one game? Was Troy a bad player that we never should have played? Just dumb logic to evaluate players after just one game.

I hope you get a clue for Christmas

  • A whole two quarters you watched? Now there is a well informed opinion. I wonder how much game film they watched of the kid over at the WHAC before they decided to dedicate valuable time and resources to try to convince him to come to OSU? 5? 10 minutes maybe?

    Go Buckeyes!!
