This is the first topic or whatever I've ever done. I don't understand up/down votes so unless you found a way to take away my birthday, do what you gotta do. If you can take away my B-day, let's be rational and talk it out.

I'm watching the OSU vs Nebraska 2011 replay. And let me say that this is not an attack on any Bucknuts member or I'm right & you guys are jerks whatever. This is just my feelings on the matter. I was frustrated with his performance like everyone else. I bet no one felt more frustrated than Joe Bauserman did. Does anyone doubt that he didn't love being a buckeye? He was devoted to it enough to backup for years without complaint. He did the best he could in a horrible circumstance. Does anyone think he won't deeply regret that, in spite of his best, he disappointed the team he loved the most and left the program a reviled figure? He will have a regret that he will carry for the rest of his life. And people will be the worst about it. You know it. I watch the game and think back over his career and appreciate the fact that he was promoted beyond his ability but he did his best. The same for Zwick or any of the players who didn't succeed (whoever determines what success is). Anyone think they hoped for mediocrity?

The personal attacks on players for on-field performance is just.......unsavory to me. Kicking someone when they're down.

Joe, not that I believe you actually spend time perusing bucknuts soaking up people's opinions, but, if you are, I measure your success in fortitude. You never quit. Regardless of the vitriol. Without complaint. That's strength of character.

    Brian

    Very true.

However, striking out at a player who screwed up, wasn't good enough, etc. is simple human nature. And when that player is the QB, this is doubly the case (they always get 5x more credit/blame than they deserve). I'm as guilty as anyone of this.

Does this reflect poorly on me (and others who have done it)? Maybe. On the other hand, if you want to eliminate it...you'll have to make the team and sport one that nobody really cares about. (I don't ever recall a "God XYZ sucks" post about fencing, gymnastics or field hockey.)

CFB will ALWAYS be more than a casual interest of fans. And Buckeye Football will NEVER be something OSU fans are indifferent about. So you can not like personal attacks on players...you can even call out those who post such comments. However, IMHO you'll never stop those behaviors. It's just human nature when we're passionate (fanatical) about something.

I can only assume players are big enough fans of their own sport to recognize this and accept it for what it is...primal reactions and nothing personal. Hell, a big part of why a kid decides to come play for OSU is the fanatical fanbase. If he wanted to avoid such things, he probably ought to pick a different sport...or at least choose a school like say Duke or Indiana (where fans don't expect their team to play well/win and are only really following the team until basketball season).

    You won't but I will...

I love the Buckeyes as much as the next guy but I will NEVER hold my tongue about the development of certain positions while Tressel was at the helm. Offensive line and QB development were abhorrent in the last few years of the Tressel era. Too many damn cronies and not enough QUALIFIED coaches. Since we're discussing QB's I'll leave that horrible walrus out of this post but since the loss of coach Daniels, OSU has been haunted with a coach who should have never held the title of QB coach in Siciliano.

Siciliano had NO business coaching. It makes absolutely no sense for a guy to be in a program of the caliber of OSU and not be able to show better than what Bauserman did. Pryor's development as a QB was well below average at best. I would excuse their play and overall improvement as QB's if they were at Akron or Toledo but a school of OSU's preeminence should simply develop better.

I've said it once and I'll say it again, I'm so glad the new regime is here. Better play calling, better development, and better coaching. Many of the Tresselites here will point to his B1G record and conference titles. I too feel that Tress did the best with what he had in coaches - but HE hired the coaches to develop these young men. Therefore, the blame falls squarely on his shoulders. Anyone who thinks that the former offensive coaching staff was on par with the other top programs in the country needs to take off the scarlet and gray glasses.

I dont blame Bauserman. All reports indicated he was a hard worker and never complained about his role. I blame Bollman, Siciliano, and Tress for not only playing a kid like Bauserman but also not having developed him to a point where he would be "READY" after 4 years in the program.

Did Siciliano get another job as a QB coach????

I agree with everything you said, my comment about not bashing past coaches was because imo this thread didn't deserve bashing but what JB did for the program and he took a lot of heat for it.

On a positive note, he received a free education.

Kind of. I believe it was part of his baseball contract that if he went back to college the Pirates had to pay his way. The good thing for OSU was that he didn't use up a scholarship. He was the "86th" man on the roster.

As far as folks saying that OSU should have had better backups at QB on the roster - I agree, but who was going to come to OSU once Pryor committed, and who was going to come to OSU once they saw how he could play? It was obvious that Terrelle had the job 100% until he graduated or left early. I guess Tressel could have gone after better talent, but it may have been a waste of time. If Miller had the freshman year that Pryor did, OSU might be in the same situation again today.

Regardless, I have no hard feelings for Joe at all. I'm sure he did the best he could under a bad set of circumstances. Not everyone can be Tebow, er Pryor.

At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought.

    Totally agree.
I'd be remise to not admit that I too was one of the many that bashed Bauserman, when in reality the kid only did what he could - try his best. He just simply didn't have the tools. To make matters worst he was coupled with a coaching staff that couldn't develop a QB even if the QB's lineage included the likes of Montana, Elway, Marino, and Pryor (PUT TOGETHER). I wish Bauserman nothing but the best. He gave his all to a program that didn't always appreciate his commitment. Not even his coaches appreciated him enough to employ the best QB coach available. Sad.

On a bright note: New coaches, New play calling, and Tom F'n Herman!!!

  • Love Joe

Hated the coaches last season who were as rudderless as the team

The defense lost the Nebraska game BTW. I mean c'mon no way a team should be able to run the same play over and over and a Slver Bullet D be unable to stop it for a full half of football. Nebraska makes one half time adustment on the way they blocked their option and we have no answer ..... you kiddin me

Bauserman was a good High School qb. He was known for his 4th quarter comebacks against the strongest competition in Florida. He also had 5 star Fred Rouse as a receiver that didnt make it at the next level either.

  • I agree. I think it's pathetic when fans are truly mean because a player isn't good enough. Critiquing is one thing, but the nasty stuff is just wrong. I appreciate his efforts and know just how hard it is to even be good enough to be in a Buckeye uniform.
