  • Sorry, I disagree about Brown and his catching ability. Prior to the Michigan TD, he hadn't made a meaningful catch in almost 2 years. Every bigtime ball was DROPPED!!! He ain't da man!!! Need to look elsewhere unless he does a Clifford Franklin from the Replacements and they dump stinkum on his hands.

  • Could these dropped balls be attributed to coaching? I mean, it's not like we had a world class QB coach converted from video coordinator. I would expect Braxton to improve tremendously this year and the new receivers coach, Zach Smith, might help these guys become better players.

If these guys were very productive in high school, and then fell off at the college level, that has to be coaching, right?

I'm sure Philly will get a shot at the spot but most of the balls I remember him dropping, he had 2 hands on. (that Iowa ball from Pryor in '10 was the beginning) Maybe he has a mental block and coaching will help.

Funny isn't it? We nail coach Sis for starting his career as a video coordinator but apparently think the world of new coach Smith who spent his first five years as a "Quality Control Assistant." Then he moved on to powerhouses Marshall and Temple before his gig with the Bucks. I thought I saw dramatic technical improvement with Pryor over his three years and thought Brax improved over the course of his first year as QB. Based on what I saw, we have seen improved QB play with each of our last two QBs. Zack Smith may well be an improvement over Stan as you suggest. Time will tell.
To address your question, no, it doesn't have to be coaching. The game speeds up dramatically from high school to D-1 college football both physically and mentally. Good coaching helps kids make that adjustment. Some kids never adjust. Some improve as they go through the years as we all hope will be the case with Philly Brown.

  • I get it that Philly has dropped passes. The only thing more prevalent on this board than a Diggs thread is one about Philly dropping passes. So I start by saying that he has to get more consistent and fundamentally sound with his approach to catching the ball. Now, my hope and belief is that with a new staff/clean slate, his confidence can be restored when he plays a position more like his high school days, when he DOMINATED. He looked awesome in the all star game playing RB/WR, much like Lamar Thomas did. But we always took the RB out of them when they got here and strictly played them at WR, running nothing but 'go routes' and deep comebacks. Harvin got the ball 6-10 times a game on jet sweeps, counters, ect. Put the athletic player in position to succeed, get him in RHYTHM, and then start to hit some slants, and boom, spring him for a 'go route'.

Again, just to preempt the avalanche of "he can't catch" and "he's no Percy Harvin" comments, read the post again. Instill him with confidence by properly using his talents, and then judge him. The staff is wiping the slate clean, and I suggest we do the same and stop kicking dirt on the player actually on the roster who most aptly fits the job description.

  • Diggs or not I do not think it matters in 2012..I think OSU will be a "power running" team that will use spread..The spread will force team defend the entire field opening up OSU's power running game..OSU will pound teams this fall.
