Indians or Reds - Best Shot At Making Playoffs?

  • Now that the major league baseball season is nearly a month old, who do you think has the best shot at making the playoffs, the Reds or the Indians?

    Bill Kurelic

  • I think it's about the same. Both teams have juggernauts at the top of their division in the Cardinals and Tigers, and both teams appear to be the 2nd or 3rd best team in their division.

  • Indians. One factor is simply that the Indians have one fewer divisional foe in the AL central compared to the NL central. Another factor is that it appears the Twins and Royals will be 'historically' bad this year. Therefore, if something happens to Detroit, and anything can still happen, the Tribe very well might be there to take the division.

  • Reds...that is all

  • And this Topic Belongs to the Reds!

  • Reds, NL Central has weaklings Chicago, Pittsburgh, and Houston... that's a plus, I don't think St. Louis stays up there all season, good early success but Wainwright is looking bad now, Berkman and Beltran are old and age does not discriminate. Not sold on Cards starters this year, I think they'll come back to the pack. Loshe is not a Cy Young pitcher like he's started.

  • The Reds. And it is not about their Divisions or who has the better team. I believe the Indians pitching, especially the bullpen makes them the better team. But it is about the wild-card. Neither team will win their division. Both division are pathetic at the bottom (both Chicago's, Pitt, Houston, KC and Minny). The Reds will not win the division over St. Louis or Milwaukee and no way in hell Cleveland beats Detroit unless the team plane crashes on a road trip.

What it comes down to, is which team could win one of the wild cards. And the AL is a much better league than the NL. The Indians will not win more games than the Yankees, Sox, Rays, Rangers, Angels or Tigers. There are 5 playoff spots for those six teams. And that doesn't even include a team like Toronto which has some great young pitching to go with that very good offense. The Indians would need to win more games than two of those teams to get a wild card, and that is not going to happen.

The top teams in the NL all have serious question marks (San Fran, LA, Philly, Miami, St. Louis, Milwaukee). I think the Reds have the better chance to sneak into one of the wild card spots.

  • Tribe for sure!

If the guys who just came up from Columbus last year can keep developing and...
If Hafner and Sizemore can find away to stay healthy for any length of time and...
If the starting pitching manages to told up and...
If we can find a way to consistently produce run support and...
If Detroit goes cold long enough and...
If all the planets align during a solar eclipse, then the Tribe wins the AL Central!

    It's that easy!

  • This year I'm going to be a fair-weather fan and not start watching the Reds until they show some consistency. Just when they look like they've turned the corner and are going to finish strong and give us hope, the All-Star Game rears its ugly head. Then the pitchers and position players having good seasons go into the tank. The All-Star break must give them time to read their press clippings.

My above quote was from 4 months ago. Apparently the All-Star break did not have its normal devastating effect on the Reds. I'm holding my breath from here on out, though.
Indians need to take a deep breath and concentrate. They are giving games away.

The Indians aren't giving games away. They are flat out getting their ass kicked. They can't pitch or hit, a bad recipe in baseball.

I was referring to their lack of urgency. Almost as if they don't care. As I said, they need some focus.

Yeah...they can focus all they want but with a team that is 2nd to last in ERA and 3 legitimate big league hitters, it won't help. The first half was a mirage. They were a .500 ballclub in the worst division in baseball. Reality is setting in and it isn't pretty to watch.

  • Nice...good find bringing this one back. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that I think the Reds have a better chance this year.

Bill, I was going to take the reds and give you the indians. I guess I forgot to hit send in april. Is it too late to place that bet? :)
