Inside The Shoe: "What went right/wrong versus Toledo"

  • What Went Right/Wrong: Toledo
    Monday, September 12, 2011

That certainly wasn't the game any of us were expecting, including Mark May. The offense struggled all game long, the special teams (at times) looked awful, and the defense was back on it's heels for the entire game what with the Spread formations and trickery by Toledo. Let's take a look at what went right and wrong for the Buckeyes on Saturday.

    ► What Went Right

    - Carlos Hyde rushed for 76 yards on 20 carries with 2 touchdowns, but he dominated for most of this game, pushing for extra yardage and giving that extra effort, which really payed off in the end. Hyde also scored the eventual game winner, running right up the gut from the 3 yard line and in for the score to give the Buckeyes the lead against the Rockets I'm sure due to his play in the past 2 games that when Jaamal Berry and Jordan Hall take the field again, Fickell will find room for this kid to get some yardage, most likely on short yardage situations.

    - The secondary play for Ohio State was once again a big factor in on the defense. All middle to deep passes were covered very well, and Dominic Clarke and Bradley Roby did very well for themselves, and give some serious depth to this corner spot when Travis Howard returns to play. Some might argue that these 2 should be the starters, and Howard should earn his spot back, and I might end up agreeing with them. The final drive by Toledo was on complete lock-down as far as deep passing. They couldn't hit the men they wanted to, which lead to more pressure for a mistake to be made.

    - John Simon as usual was a leader for this team. After playing decently in the first half, Simon had to leave the game for a while as he was cramping to an extreme. In that absence, the Rockets did well for themselves, although they did that all day anyway, and were able to have the ball on the last drive to give themselves a chance. Fortunately, Simon happened to return from the cramp to come in and play, and lead to his quarterback rush, which resulted in a bad ball from the QB on 4th down. Game over, Buckeyes win.

    ► What Went Wrong

    - Joe Bauserman went 16/30 for 189 yards and 1 TD. As I expected, against an actual pass-rush, Bauserman faltered under the pressure, and gave more questions than answers as to what the situation with the quarterbacks is. Fickell was impressed with him against Akron, and clearly made him the starter, as Braxton Miller didn't have one single snap the entire game. I did not see Bauserman complete more than 1 deep ball, and even the 1 deep ball he completed was only deep because the receiver ran up the field for more yardage. It's almost as if Fickell knows he can't pass, and so is fine with settling with consistent screen and bubble passes that don't work in an I-Formation. Things are going to go south very quickly in the W/L column, unless something changes here soon.

Chris Fields made a name for himself in the face of bad
    - The special teams for Ohio State has been a weak point the last 2 years now, and sans a Chris Fields touchdown, there were no bright spots. We had a blocked punt, a missed FG, and horrid kickoff coverage. Not to mention, Jaamal Berry didn't look anything close to the Jaamal Berry we saw returning last year, as he ran straight into his blockers, and just seemed overally slow. I'm not one to criticize Berry, and even I know that he didn't look too solid.

    - Rod Smith has to hold onto the football if he wants to see time again this season. He had Ohio State's only turnover a week ago, and this time he gave Toledo one final crack at upsetting Ohio State. Even that might not be enough to get him on the field, though. The fact that we were trying to run the clock down so that Toledo could finally be put away and he fumbled (with one hand on the ball) shows he didn't truly know the situation. I'm not going to bash on the kid, it was a mistake and he's got a lot of talent. He's got to learn from this though, and can't let it happen in the future.

  • The missed blocks mention:
I watched the Akron recording at least 3 times, complete.
Missed blocks / being out of position ... aplenty. But the swarming to the ball was salvation.
Toledo was much better at taking advantage.

The thing that bothered me about this weekends game was the number of times that the same play(s) were successful for them.

  • I don't think the Akron game did this team any favors. They were so bad, that there were no lessons learned. While there were missed assignments and poor reads, there were no consequences for them because Akron was terrible. As a matter of fact, that game may have been negative reinforcement for the team as it may have taught them that some mistakes/techniques have no negative outcome.

Honestly, I think it may be better to look at the Akron game as a live scrimmage and to look at the Toledo game as the first game of the year. That said, here are my observations of the first game of the year (Toledo):

-Hyde was unimpressive. Those that think he was elite, please go back and watch guys that we know were elite (Chris Wells, MoC) and refresh your memory on what elite looks like. There was no doubt about either early in their career. Frankly, I think Rod Smith flashes more and Hyde doesn't break as many tackles as you would think. Additionally, I think he looks a little bit soft (he is not particularly jacked) and as a result he runs like a 200lb back. Rod Smith seems to be a bit small in the upperbody.

-Oline play, it is tough to tell how well they played or didn't. There was not a ton of push, not the kind you would expect from a perennial top 5 team vs. a mid major. There were holes, but I don't think they were play was called. My theory is that the reason Hyde ran up his blockers backsides is because he was running to where the hole was supposed to be and it wasn't there. This theory is further augmented by the fact that he continued to get carries (RBs that go to the wrong place generally lose carries). This implies that the OLine was unable to open holes for the called play and our RBs lacked the vision to find the holes that the defense created in defending the play.

-QB play: Atrocious. Ladies and Gentlemen, Joe Bauserman "is who we thought he is." Enough said. I know it is one game, but sometimes that is enough. He missed receivers, but more importantly he lost his poise under pressure. OSU can handle an inaccurate QB, hell TP started for 3 years, what a team cannot handle is a guy that breaks down under pressure. We aren't talking about it now because he did not throw any picks, but as you rewatch the game watch for backfooted throws, particularly when he perceives (may or may not actually exist) pressure. He has happy feet back there, and that is a bad sign and it is only a matter of time until it turns into INTs, mark my words. It is Miller-Time, and personally, my opinion of Fickell will be shaped based on whether or not he recognizes that going into this week. If he insists on going full Bow-Wow again this week, then I will know that this is about his job and not what is right for this team.

-WR play: We need playmakers. Verlon Reed is going to be a good possession guy and will get open for us, but we need a guy to stretch the field. Devin Smith looks like that guy. He needs to be the Y receiver when Posey comes back.

-Dline Play: OSU has no true pass rushing WDE on the roster. Nate Williams did not play this week, but he has not been a guy that has had a ton of success in getting to the QB. I think the right answer is to look to more of a jumbo set DL with Simon at WDE, Bellamy SSDE, Hank at 3Tech, Goebel at NT. We saw it this week and it looked pretty decent. It ensures that we are not going to get run on, that is for sure. We could even bring Williams in to play Sam particularly against Wisco, which leads to my next point.....

-LB Play: Sweat is amazing at the Will and Sabino is definitely flashing at Mike. He may still need some time and is not always where he should be, but he is a play maker and has the speed to get to where he needs to go. It is time to put Storm Klein on the bench. Sorry, he is stiff and slow. Nice Pick this week, but he didn't have the speed to catch Toledo's RB on the corner and really wasn't even close (with the angle). Klein is unremarkable. Shazier continues to look great everytime he is on the field (ST this week), we need to get 15lbs on that kid quick.

-Secondary: The corners look awesome, safeties.... meh. Barnett was up and down. Moeller hasn't really done much in 2 games, Johnson looks to have improved, but he was probably the weak link last year, so that doesn't say much. We will get a much better idea after this week, when we play a team with alot of talent.

-Not sure what the deal with Berry is. There must be something going on in practice that we are not seeing. Neither RB played so well this week that not going to Berry would make sense. He seems to have good vision with the ball in his hands which is something that the other 2 are seriously lacking. Not calling for him to get more carries, because like I said, there has to be something going on that we are not seeing, but I would just like to know what that something is.

  • The safety issue can be solved very easily: Christian Bryant needs to play more. He needs to rotate between OJ and Tyler's spots and those other two guys should only play when he's not at that particular spot. Bryant needs to be on the field as much as possible. Tyler looks a bit rusty (which is somewhat understandable) and OJ is slow and soft. I think CJ Barnett will be okay, as like Tyler, he's probably still a bit rusty from the injury.

    Outstanding

  • On the Two deep balls bauserman was a second late. throw the ball earlier the WR runs to the ball instead of letting the DB make the play. The positive to this is that devin smith blew by his guy who was sitting deep anyways.

Yeah, if there is a silver lining to the Toledo game it is this. It's a wake up call, learning experience for a very young, but talented team. I'll take that, plus the W.

That is a huge silver lining. This was a test right before a test. That will get the kids attention.

The team better have some wrinkles against Miami (Miller within a series, etc). The play calling will not get it done down there.

I hope we play the kids most motivated to play in Miami (Howard, Berry, Bino, etc).

Finally, I watched the Dallas vs NYJ game last night. The way Dallas uses Witten should be our textbook for Stoney the rest of the year. Bringing him out of the backfied, splitting him wide, TE screens, etc. He needs 6 - 10 touches per game in my opinion.

  • John Simon and Big Hank along with Goebel dominated that game. Simon was just unstoppable.

The defense, for the most part, played lights out. It was only when they got too aggressive and overplayed (typical mistake of youth) did they get burnt. Toledo had two guys who could make you pay. Page and that one RB of theirs. Those were two very fast dudes. Even so I thought OSU did an outstanding job of containing them for the majority of the game.

Toledo scored 3 times in the entire game and with each score you can point to one big play which allowed it to happen. Toledo never had any sustained drives which yielded points.

    1. Blocked punt which gave them the ball on the buckeye 1 yard line
    2. The 66 yard pass play which resulted in a TD
    3. 44 yard pass play to open the third quarter which put them at the OSU 8

If you take away those three plays....Toledo may not score. Its not like when we played Wisconsin last year and they just kicked our butts up and down the field. The defense played well.

The offense is where the problems lie.

I read Duane's blog on the game and I don't understand how he can praise Hyde or the offensive line. I'm not arguing so much as I would really like to know how it can be equated to having a good game or "playing well" when you are a 240+ lbs tailback and getting stuffed in the hole by undersized Toledo linebackers all game long. Why wasn't the offensive line able to get to the second level and provide Hyde a hole he can get through?

Reed looked awesome again as did Stoneburner right up to when he dropped that damned 4th down pass. I wanted to kick him in the nutts for dropping that. Chris Fields on special teams makes me say...."Berry who?"

  • I believe Duane is giving Hyde a learning curve. Everyone is expecting Hyde to be like Prime MoC/Beanie his first two games. That is very unrealistic. MoC is the only back that I remember coming in their first year and dominating.

Robert smith didn't do it (had some good stats, but would not call him elite his first year)
    Eddie George didn't do it
    Pitman didn't do it
    Beanie didn't do it

Personally, Hyde reminds me of "quiet storm"
