Jamal Marcus has been moved to DE

  • after watching him play ST last year this is the best spot for him IMO, he has the motor of a dynamic DE.... LB is more read and react, hard to think that would work with the way he seems to play... Passing down blitzing sack machine in the making.

  • Every game i went to he warmed up with de. I was hammered but in sure 34 lined up with de

    Man, what a bummer.

I hope it helps him but with our defensive end talent in place and whats coming in; he could be on his way outta here.

seems like you are discounting that he could grow into a great one at that position, though I suppose it could play out that way. I wondered if this wouldn't happen when he was not in that picture posted of the linebackers a couple days ago

  • It was said in I think the BH or in McBrutus' thread the staff was worried about the depth at Leo. Safe to say Marcus can beat out Miller and will be a beast at this position. I know everyone remembers his HS highlight video.

  • I agree with those who see this move as a positive...we need depth at LEO behind Spence and he could be a real terror coming off the edge in a 3-4 look.

NOOOO, This is great news! The staff was extremely worried about depth at that position. this kid was unblockable in high school. Put him on the edge and let him terrorize the qb's. Fantastic!

My thinking traces back to high school. After a good freshmen year at DT/DE and a couple good days of practice with the JV team, I was told Varsity wanted me to come up and play at linebacker.

I told them to give me a day or two to try linebacker at the JV level. I was freaking awful.

I was good at getting upfield quickly and getting into the head of the OL so on passing downs I had him setup for some type of move. I fired off the ball quickly and always knew where to go. It was all instinct and speed.

Linebacker is soooo tough for a guy on the line to move to. You have to stay low and not really move until you read the play. A step in the wrong direction or a 1/10th of a second too late, you're out of the play as a blocker is already on you.

I asked to stay on the JV team were it felt right. Looking at Marcus's film, I could tell his natural skillset was being on the front line and attacking right away.

  • Also, I would say that Curtis Grant is going to be iffy based on Biddle's comments that Heacock at some point said he wanted to move him to DE as well.

That's code for "he's not intuitive enough to play linebacker"

A lot of guys whose first instinct is to attack upfield......you tell them to sit back and weed through the play and you're taking away their edge.

Moving to DE is hardly a downgrade..in fact coaches place a premium value are pass rushing defensive ends.. coaches place a high value on defensive ends who can get to the quarterback...Teams with the best DLs usually are playing for championships..IMO you can never have enough DEs..

Not considering it a downgrade but if there is any position that we have recruited very well, it's DE.

I don't see where he will play over guys already established at DE. Especially when we have two monsters who came in the same class with him.

I was hoping he would make a impact at our teams weakest position which is linebacker.

Over Spence or Washington who is his same year?

Better then Tyquan, Pittman? Bosa? What about the upper class men?

I suppose he could. We do rotate a lot but I don't ever see him being a starter here.

How about Bosa could end up at a DT. Washington has to keep is weight down or he could be back at the DT spot himself. Also, Meyer's d at Florida kept rotating players in and out to keep fresh. This just adds to that depth. Spence might get 60% of the snaps, that still leaves 40% of the snaps for who ever can show they can also be a special talent. And not to nick pick but Spence hasn't won his spot yet, either has Washington or Schutt. They will have to go out and earn it. What if Marcus is just flat out better at the WSDE then Spence is? Are we really that sold that Spence after limited reps last year is the absolute starter and best on the team?

  • Last two games of 2012, Marcus was doing some warm up drills with the DE's, so not sure this is a total surprise.
A more athletic Thad Gibson is a good comparison.

I thought Spence was out best DE last year after Simon. He proved himself to me. If Marcus is better then Spence then Whooo weeee we would be unbeatable.

That should scare the crap out of the competition...my goodness.

The depth is what could be scarey.
Rotating a lot of DL is what made that vaunted FSU defensive front in the 90's so great, same with LSU now and Bama to some degree.
OSU can throw a lot of different looks at people, and a lot of different DL packages, from power, to power with speed, to a lot of pure speed.
Deep and talented DL's win championships.
Carroll's USC teams had these kind of DL's, and Leo/Viper type outside backers like Cushing and Matthews.
Marcus starting migrating this way last year, as noted, he warmed up in the last 2 games with DE's. Kid is explosive as hell and a head hunter.
