Jerry Sandusky - Something To Consider

  • Do you really care about this man raping little boys? Do you?? I'm just at the end of my rope reading these threads about hanging Jerry, put him away forever, etc. I normally don't like to get on my soap box, but I'm a proud Buckeye so I'm going to challenge you all as proud Buckeyes. If you genuinely care I encourage you to do something about it besides make yourself feel good by sitting behind a keyboard and spouting out hate. I'm not saying Jerry doesn't deserve it....if he did all this he certainly does and it sure does appear to be a very sad, dark, and true story. Take a second to read this perspective and let it challenge you in regards to what you do going forward.

I volunteer for an organization that takes in Franklin County Foster kids for a week of camp every year. We ask for and take in the worst of the kids....requesting to take the kids that usually get kicked out of camps or aren't asked to go. Through that organization I've had my eyes opened wide to what really goes on around me. I grew up in white picket fence land, had great parents, and was protected from most bad things this world had to offer. We go through an FBI background, extensive training, etc and when I first started I thought it was all just overkill...until I saw first hand how damaged most of these kids are. I was actually originally frustrated with all the training because here I was agreeing to give up a week of my life to stay at this camp and I already work about 70-80 hours a week running my own business. Anyhow to keep it short I realized from day 1 of camp why we received the training as one of the boys I was in charge of took his shirt off to swim and had a hand print on his back from apparently being struck. Another episode that stands out that week is one of the boys in our room woke up several nights at 2 or 3 coming out of a dream yelling....YELLING....please don't touch me, please don't touch me. At the end of the week that same boy was sitting beside me as some of the kids were going through their graduation ceremony (they would be too old to come back to camp next year). The kids on stage were crying because they realized how much the camp gave them hope....and it was over. This boy sat beside me and asked me why those kids were crying like little girls. In the moment I thought to myself....geez....we loved on this kid the whole week, played, had fun and he didn't get it. Then 10 minutes later as we got on the bus to leave I heard something behind me and it was this same boy with his head buried in the window balling his eyes out...and he was the tough kid at camp.

After that week I didn't care about working 70-80 hours a week....I was going to find time to do what was right for these kids. We started a mentor program and last week was the end of our first full year. I'm experiencing first hand kids having their lives changed.

Here is the challenge I pose to you. I've shared this story in front of many organizations and churches.....asking for money and volunteers to help support the camp. It amazes me over and over that because this is something that takes a level of commitment....it is crazy difficult to find people that are willing to give up their time or resources. I get that obligatory "pat on the back" so many times and "hey...what you are doing is great", but rarely does anyone put their time or money where their mouth is. It is frustrating to the point that as a "Christian" I want to throw up when I see the response I get when I go to churches....because I get more response from the secular world. Anyhow that is just me being frank. The absolute point here is that you aren't wrong for hating what Jerry did....but there are Jerry's everywhere and more importantly there are abused kids everywhere. It is an epidemic that goes under the radar. We can either help these kids now....or pay the taxes for all the prisons they will end up in because of how jacked up they become. I would love to share more about this camp and if you want to know you can PM me, but that isn't my goal. My goal is that you would take that feeling inside you that hates what Jerry did and let it inspire you to do more than spew out words behind a keyboard. Go spend time with your kids, volunteer to be a baseball coach, be a big brother / sister.....just do something to make a difference. THAT is what will drive folks like Jerry out of our communities and protect these kids.

I gave you an upvote but maybe the down vote was because it kinda sounded like you were tooting your own horn a tad. Either way, its good what you do and keep it up.

  • I work with adolescents, ones that in many ways are similar to Sandusky's prey....And I can say with conviction that I hope he gets convicted, sent to the deepest, rankest cell in prison, and dies a long and agonizing death.

I also have no problem with others expressing their outrage at him. Usually, I defer passing judgment until the justice system has run it's course, but in this instance, the preponderance of evidence is too strong.

  • I can appreciate and actively am involved with what the op is saying. However sometimes exposure to these sick events is what is needed to motivate people to help.

  • I guess the reason it hits a raw nerve with me is because I've worked in youth ministry for 14 years and I have seen the lives of some great kids destroyed by this stuff. I just have no tolerance for it and it has nothing to do with acting tough behind a keyboard. I'm a man.... I'm 40.

  • OP. I agree with what you're trying to get across, it would be a great thing if people were able to use the PSU scandal as inspiration to help kids that need it. However, I think that people will take your post as telling people not to attack Sandusky on the board.....Maybe at least it will help everyday people be more aware of the signs of abuse and help them be able to identify and take theright steps to stop it. (Hopefully without a witch-hunt mentality)

BTW, thanks for doing the kind of work that you do. I know that it must come with baggage in addition to the rewards.

  • I'm with all of you....sick people that take advantage of kids make me sick too. I just know from being on the hands and feet side of things that more people need motivated to get involved....and then once involved that tends to be all the motivation they need. As a 17 year old kid I was targeted by a police officer that I worked for doing construction. I didn't realize it at the time and my parents guarded me close enough that the man didn't feel comfortable pursuing it....but unfortunately some of the kids that worked with me he did get to...and he is in prison now because of it. Just shows that a little involvement goes a long ways....these guys want easy prey. I figured this might be a challenge that encourages a few to do something that then in turn changes their world view. Before 2 years ago I was just a keyboard warrior about this issue...so I get it...and don't judge that....just know there is more out there to do for these kids and in turn it is a blessing to those involved. I'll ask about the golf outing for my org. and see if I can get info. There are alot of great men and women that are involved to help in all sorts of causes....we are blessed to live with the freedoms to do that....we just tend not to take advantage of those freedoms to their fullest extent. Blah, blah.... I'll pass on the golf info.

Yeah....I see what you mean. I say have at Sandusky, but keep in mind that alot of these men that do this were first victims themselves. One of my closest friends was abused in a sex ring in Pataskala (story was in the Dispatch many years ago actually) where his own parents sold him for drugs. He was systematically abused at 4,5, and 6 and watched his own sister murdered during that time. It messed him up really bad. He questioned his sexuality (not making a statement about whether it is genetics or not...just saying that is his view) and later through a series of relationships with people on the wrong side of the tracks was drugged, raped, and purposely given HIV. After struggling with drugs / alcohol and many other things he got his life together and realized the only way to change things was to get involved. He was on the speaking circuit for Children's Hospital at benefits etc. and started going to prisons to speak to men such as Jerry Sandusky and help them realize what their victims suffered. He is the one that scolded me one time for putting my anger and frustration towards people like Sandusky. He realizes he is lucky not to have become a Sandusky...while one of his brothers has....it's just a pattern of total brokenness. The dude I know is totally healthy, but refuses to be with any kids alone because of his past....which is a testimony to the fact he "gets it". So I just know that this is a story that has many sides. That doesn't mean that Jerry doesn't deserve what he gets, but when you are raped or abused as a child it has lasting and deep impact through your adulthood. Turning 18 or "becoming a man" doesn't change that.....it is intense from what I've seen. Again...I have no idea where Sandusky has come from, but that is my point....none of us do. It doesn't excuse what he did....but it does give a possible explanation that we might want to note. Doesn't mean he should be behind bars....we have to protect the innocent....just means this whole thing is a sad repetitive disease.

I think a lot of times the ones that lash out at people like Sandusky don't really realize their own brokenness. It's so easy to make one or two choices that take us down a path, and before we realize it, we've turned into someone that disgusts even ourselves. While it's right to feel anger over what he did, we should also pity Sandusky. He deserves to be punished, but our anger with him should eventually turn into a desire for his life to be turned around. When each of us find ourselves at our lowest point, making decisions we thought we'd never make, that's exactly what we wish for ourselves.

  • Wow great insight lotzman, especially that last post about your friend.

If the sordid details of the Sandusky case inspire adults to donate or volunteer for organizations like yours then that is great.

But at an absolute minimum, please notice how many adults in Happy Valley enabled Sandusky for decades by turning a blind eye to his perversions. There have to be at least 10-20 cowards who utterly failed at their adult responsibility to protect children. So at least take this as a wake up call for anyone, if you ever witness abuse don't rest until you're assured that child is safe.

  • I up voted you too. Thanks for what you do. I'm tired of hearing how our own fans want blood because:
    1.) "its worse than tatoos"
    2.) "it helps recruiting"
3.) "we hate their delusional fans" (mirror folks)
4.) "penn st deserves it for what they said about us"

Please lets just let the law sort this sordid tale out. One thing I've learned over the last year is the NCAA and College Administration cannot deal in these matters or others.
