Jesus....Dan Wetzel Just Went HAM on the Big Ten and Rose Bowl

  • This is getting a lot of play. Wetzel wrote the popular book "Death To The BCS"

    http://sports.yahoo.com/news/ncaaf--big-ten-surrenders-fight-for-on-campus-playoff-games-for-wrong-reasons.html;_ylt=AiGhlw5J2ZTUrTpisiszGng5nYcB

I love the Roe Bowl. My parents are grads from Wisconsin and Michigan. I have been to a Rose Bowl 5 times. It is special.... I love it.

But dear god did Wetzel just put the conference on blast. I am sure there is some response that could muster some type of counter argument but that was just brutal.

Before replying, I hope you read the actual article. There is this annoying habit where people post links and then a bunch of replies are totally aloof.

I would much prefer a system with the Rose Bowl, Sugar Bowl, and let's go with the Colts stadium rotating a championship game.

  • What the hell is wrong with Wetzel? As soon as I was ready to say I agree with him, he amazingly included this sentence in his piece:

"Showcasing the incredible game-day environment of Camp Randall, Happy Valley or the Big House? We love the Rose Bowl."

Wait, did he just tout Michigan's "game-day environment" and not Ohio State's? That's laughable. I've always felt Wetzel has a burr up his ass about OSU. This kind of proves it. Other guys, I might say honest mistake. With him? Probably intentional that he mentioned Wisconsin's, Penn State's and Michigan's game-day environment, but not the best in the Big Ten -- Ohio State's. The OSU-jealousy is amazing.

  • But yes, other than that absurdity, I agree with his point. On-campus games for the national semifinals would be outstanding. Then play the national title game at a neutral site. Mimic the NFL. It's really not that difficult.

    Dave Biddle

  • I'm on board with what he is saying 100 percent. More of an error to dismiss campus playoff games by the B10 than by him not mentioning OSU.

    pburger

  • I get so mad thinking about how bad these old timers are going to mess this up for us. Wetzel is right and many feel the same way he does. We do need these games on campus!! All of us fans in the B1G need to let our voices be heard. To HELL with the Rose Bowl megaphone

    I agree.

  • I am surprised Wetzel got under your skin there Bids. Agree it's a slight, but it's subtle and really small comparative to a handful or dozen of other national guys who aren't that subtle.

Wetzel and Yahoo have had been fair to us imo although that certainly was a subtle jab.

He is totally right in the fact that I don't think it's fair to travel to Indy, then let's say the Rose Bowl, and then again for the title game.

The conference is choosing a love affair over common sense. Perserving the Rose Bowl is noble, but in a playoff system it just won't be the same and is not worth preserving. You have to change....Let it go....

As I said, if it was a one-time deal, it wouldn't have gotten under my skin at all. But I've had the opinion for a while that Wetzel is anti-OSU. (And I'm not one to usually say that about media-types.) Not including OSU when he's talking about best game-day environments in the Big Ten might seem like nothing to some people, but those that have followed Wetzel's work would agree it was probably intentional.

It would be like writing about toughest outdoor environments in the NFL and mentioning Paul Brown Stadium but not Lambeau Field. (This coming from a Bengals fan.) The frozen tundra of PBS!

  • His article is 100 percent correct.

  • comparing Wetzel to acne faced dipshits writing on Bleacher Report? SMH at that ;)

I rarely use HAM....it is overused but that's what Wetzel did and I have limited space for new threads.

Also Dbids, the photo in the article is Ohio Stadium so that helps I guess.

Yeah, the editor or webmaster did try and save him there. Ha.

  • this whole idea kind of seems like the 3/5''s compromise.

Change is happening, some people don't want to acknowledge it, so an asinine system that blends the new with the old is rolled out. It's obviously stupid and will be nixed at some point down the road.

Hopefully the conferences leadership steps up here.

  • I completely understand the frustration. For 40 years B10 fans have been clamoring for meaningful postseason games to be played in the north in the elements. On the other hand, this shouldn't shock anyone. The stage for this was set when the B10 championship game was placed in a dome. Does everyone remember the debates about having the game at Soldier Field?

I think this is all explained by one thing. The same thing that drives everything in college football... $$$$. By having schools, particularly northern schools, host a playoff game you lose a seperate stream of corporate money into the coffers. Sure, OSU would sell out a home playoff game easy enough, but they couldn't evict the lease holders of those luxury boxes. Now, take a game to a neutral site and everything is for sale. More tickets for corporations who are wlling and able to pay ridiculous $$ for them. They are setting this up to sell to the advertising and corporate interest. They may wrap it up in the Rose Bowl or other bowls, but at the end of the day, they are repackaging everything to have something to sell. The people they are selling to are not college football fans, they are corporate marketing divisions. They are not interested in home games, they want their name on everything. Just think about how much the naming rights to that first playoff is going to cost.

  • By the way, Dan Wetzel authored one of the best books ever written about prep/college hoops... Sole Influence. It's a bit outdated now, but still a worthwhile read. It really exposes the undersaide of the college basketball world (AAU & show companies).

  • I am usually not picky about anything said but, Benny, do you have to take the Lord's name in vain in the title?

  • Here's my rant.

‎"It would be a competitive advantage to have semifinal games at home fields … but the bowls have been good to us," Nebraska AD Tom Osborne said.

"There's a part of me that wants to play a team from the Southwest or the Southeast in five-degree weather," Ohio State's Gene Smith told the Sporting News. "But is it really right for the game?"

These two comments are illogical and stupid. Really, B10? Really? You surrender home field advantage, by ceding to the SEC and Pac-12. You surrender billions of dollars that your own school could have made by simply have a HOME playoff game. As if this isn't bad enough, you site the Rose Bowl and the bowl system as reasons we can't have a home game in Columbus, Oh!!?? Do you realize that only 4 COUNT 'EM 4 teams are going to be in this playoff? Do you realize their are 109 FBS teams? I'm pretty sure the bowl system could last with those other 105 teams. I'm starting to think the coaches instead of the AD's run the freakin' conference. They would never cede a competitive advantage. At least not as piss poorly as you have. Really Gene Really? Is it right to have a HOME PLAYOFF GAME FOR THE BIG TEN? You better bet your ass it is. The SEC, PAC-12, and the ACC all have de-facto home games. Why can't we Gene, Why can't we?

    dkerns

  • Part of me thinks the Big Ten commissioners know that there are going to be northern sites that get into the semifinal mix, whether that be Indy, Detroit, NY, or wherever. WIth that, they're trying to protect the Rose Bowl. I say let it all play out before we slam the Big Ten.

I'm pretty sure the Big Ten has been way ahead of the game compared to other conferences with just about everything. Conference expansion, TV networks, etc. Just let it play out.

  • B10 controls cfb yet abandons a concept that would give the conference an easy road to a nc. I dont want a playoff if the b10 is still going to be a de facto road team 95% of the time

It's stupid but it's fun to use it satirically every once in awhile. I read the article and thought....Damn....Wetzel just went HAM.
