Lesmerises: Maxed Out on schollies, OSU has decisions to make

  • Sips16 said...

Anyone know if Devin Smith could qualify for a track scholarship now that he's on that squad?

anyone on the fb or bb teams cannot take a scolly from a minor sport. In fact...if a guy wants play both fb and BB..he takes up a scolly on each team (Ricky Dudly). FB and BB players are not even allowed academic scholarships. I believe even the next 20 members 85-105 (walk-ons) are not allowed full academic scollys because that's too easy to circumvent the rules. Other minor sports who only get partials..can in fact receive some academic scholarships.

btw..just goes to prove that even people that THINk they actually know about recruiting..really don't know much. The first problem is that if you take Scouts, or Rivals, or 247's , or espn word on "number of signees"...that's your first mistake. In the case of Bama...6 have already enrolled and can be backcounted if they want, or they don't have to be. To say..Bama has 27 recruits for the 2012 year is not an accurate statement. It could be as low as 21..today. OSU's number may be 28...but already enrolled will be backsigned. Backsigned are 2011 recruits..not 2012..and noone knows who, when, or if will be backsigned. So sitting in front of your computer on Jan.27 and saying Bama has 27 recruits for this year is just not so no matter how bad you want it to be.

It's gonna be hard to ever beat the SEC in a bcs title game. Damn

Is that a fatalistic approach, or sarcasm? Glass half empty?

  • How is he a hack? Because he is posting FACTS, as they stand TODAY. Of course there are scenarios out there could alter how we get to 82, but as it stand NOW he is correct in what he wrote. You can't assume players are leaving until they are actually gone.

I dont see whats so hard about winning a football game. We handled Arkansas fairly well. And if you look at the class we do have so far we are recruiting just as well in terms of quality. Give us 2 more classes like the one UM has already assembled in just 2 months and it will be ridiculous how good this team will be. It's not about number of players, its the quality of players and keeping them healthy for the big games. We got smashed in the trenches vs UF and LSU. In 2 years our DL will be as talented if not more than any other school in the country. I don't agree with your post.

  • Are there any 5th year Redshirt Seniors that might not be renewed?

+1...though you and I are in the extreme minority. Most seem to think the upcoming 2012 cfb season and all future seasons will be determined on Feb. 1 this year and the 1st Wednesday of February every year thereafter.. and has everything to do with number of players signed. More is always better. The higher the number and you can pencil yourself into the NC game. Poor Ole Miss and Kentucky and Troy just didn't get the memo.

I don't recall USC oversigning when they dominated the NCAA for about a 5 year stretch. They just signed every 5* they could and ran with it. Ole Miss signed 37 players the other year lol... I dont know if they even won 3 conference games that year. This thing will defintely take a seasn or 2 to really get going. I still think the schedule is JV next year and we could go 12-0 if the proper improvements are made offensively, mainly with the passing game.

This is not quite my understanding. I could be wrong, but I thought that a player with track scholly could walk on to the FB team, but the moment he stepped onto the FB field in a live game, he has to convert to a FB scholarship and be counted toward the total yearly scholarship limit (85, unless there is a sanction in place).

This is what the safety from Glennville (don't remember his name) did at Miami a couple of years ago. Of course, he was red shirting and didn't make it through his freshman year, so it was moot point.

The whole notion of stashing FB players on the track team at OSU is silly. I believe some of the guys on the track team are on partial scholarship. The track coach is being judged on how well his team performs. Why would he give a full scholarship to a part time track guy?

I passed years it has worked the other way. Some FB players have contributed to the track team. Doesn't look like that will be happening under Meyer.

  • Ok this is my thought and i dont know if anyone else will agree. Why is it such a big deal? Why is over signing so frowned upon? I think that schools should be able to over sign because it allows you to be competitive every year and allows people who are already on the team to work harder to stay on the team, BUT I also say they should not be allowed to tell a player they cant play anymore and they cant go to another school to play. I think the only reason people look down on it is because of the way the players are going out and are never able to play again. So if you were not allowed to tell a player they couldnt play for you, and they cant play for another team would it be so bad?

Unfortunately no, Football is counted over track. Meaning any track man joining football will lose track scholarship but gain football scholarship.

He did go there on a track scholarship - but the moment you take the field in football, you count against the football scholarship totals. This is no doubt ONE of the reasons he never saw the field at Miami.
