Long View: After Further Review ...

  • Perhaps Miller's problem is that he is scared of getting hit and that's why he runs at the first sign of pocket pressure. A great pocket passer must be fearless in the pocket. Braxton needs A LOT of work in this element of his game. He isn't improving in this area. Seems to me the better the defensive opponent the worse he is about running out of the pocket prematurely. This weakness gets masked by the fact the he is so good with his legs. Everybody says "Wow, did you see that run" rather than "why did he panic and leave the pocket so quickly?" It's hard to criticize him in this area of his development process because most times he turns those plays into highlight reel material. When he got slammed to the turf and sent to the hospital, and then checked out completely fine, the only conclusion you can make is he was scared of being hurt rather than actually knowing he was hurt. I think his passing problem is a matter of a lack of toughness between the ears. Regardless, I love him as a player. Just wish we could get a dual threat stud that is more balanced running and passing-wise.

  • See how easy Hyde diced up Wiskys d in OT? He and hotrod should have gotten way more carries...

  • Could not agree more Duane and shared many of these same thoughts in my blog post last night. Very frustrated with the play calling and with Stone"hands"burner. Coaches must open it up against scUM because they will score points.

BTW: I may weep Saturday seeing Simon for the last time. Love him as a player and a person!

  • The offense just had a pizz poor game, including coaches. I don't think for one minute it will happen this week. I fully expect just the opposite.

Duane, in my "Immediately After the Game Analysis" I commented on the Stoneburner drop early in the game (the sun in the eyes play). I truly believe that was a sunball because Stoney completely whiffed on the ball. I have been all over Stoney in my post game pieces all season. But the pattern for Stoney has been to flub it, but not to whiff on it. He'll drop it, but not completely miss it. That's what I believe it was a sunball.

But I do agree with you that a win is a win. I'll take it anyway I can get it.

It was a sunball. Everyone in the stadium saw it. His head emerged right into the sun as the ball arrived and he was looking directly back at the southwest corner into the sun. Frankly, it was obvious to anyone at the game that spot on the field would be a problem in the first quarter until the sun went down. It was bad enough in contrast to the rest of the stadium that I question the coaches for running a pass play in that location on the field.

Jake could not see the ball on that one pass in the first quarter. He was wide open but It was right in the sun . . .went right by his ear. That was clear on TV and the announcers noticed it right away.

On another pass, Jake was wide open on the cut and Brax threw the ball four steps later . . and it was knocked down. He did flat out drop one pass.

Jake is not the best but we should be fair.

Duane, good review. My comments after the game on Saturday, what the hell kind of routes are the receivers running? Awful and lacksidasical routes.....not one deep throw...what bothers me more? All the Brax runs and if you're really worried about turnovers, fine, but run Hyde...it's working!!! We have been to slow to start most/many games and I half attributed this to adjustments by Meyer/Herman- but after half time here, no adjustments? Are you kidding me?
Defense, can't complain...did you count how man 3/outs we had in the second half? Our D was tired and not as much subbing on the line...makes Simon's accolades all the more impressive...I can live with the yards due to wearing down against the largest O line we have seen....Never did I figure Shazier to return after that collision, he is growing into an All time Great Buckeye backer before our eyes.
What is most disapointing to me, is the afrorementioned game plan AFTER a frigging BYE WEEK. Should we be scared about Michigan, a better defense than Wisky? Hope Urban earns his check this week and we also see Smith in the backfield, he is going to break a long one soon, hopefully against Scum.

I thinly Wisky has a better defense than Mich.....NW carved the Mich defense into shreds

  • Duane, I'm glad u mentioned the receivers getting open. I noticed that when miller left the pocket, the receivers tuned their backs to him to start blocking for him to run. They need to follow him and come back for the ball. If they are actually told to turn and block then miller needs to take off rather than staying back trying to find a receiver. Any thoughts?

  • I agree too. Sending out receivers has become almost a pretext for another Braxton keeper. Other defenses have figured that out. Brax will hurt scUM if he keeps them honest with some actual completed passes, maybe even "run"-looking rollouts, then hitting a deep route or late TE the inter middle. Confident, though, that Urbs will come up with something even better than that. And use it.

  • Duane, I had to do a double take when they showed the receivers, all of them, running straight down the field , and the announcers saying good coverage. It took me back to last year. You're a receiver , do some type of a move, fake in , fake out, stop and go, button hook anything but run straight down the field and couple of them didn't even look back. We at least made up plays in the sand lots, you go down to the light pole and break over the middle, you fake look and break outside to the garbage pales. Maybe I need to send in our old playbook. Duane, you and I could cover our receivers running these patterns.
