Long View: After Further Review ...

  • This is not rocket science! Our Offensive Coaches made few if any adjustments and that is why Wisconsin's D shut us down until the OT Drive. The OT Drive was the result of outstanding OL blocking. Plain and Simple!

Our Defensive Coaches made many adjustments and most were right on target. Vrabel has done a great job with the DL. Wisconsin's OL is very good and well coached and yet our DL handled them well for most of the game. Fickell has done a great job getting the most out of a pretty thin group of LBs. The insertion of Boren as MLB a few games ago stabilized the Defense. So, upon Sabino's return, the LBs became a strength rather than a liability. I don't care if Boren did play LB in HS, it took exceptional coaching by Fickell to transform this guy from a FB to an above average MLB in just a few short weeks. The Safeties played their best game of the year. The CBs were solid as usual and Doran Grant looked good when he was in there. No, our Defense did not dominate, but our D did win the game.

Fickell, Vrabel, Withers, Coombs and all of the D Coaches deserve the credit for this one. Having stopped Wisconsin effectively on the road, I believe they will dominate UM's O at home on Saturday.

  • No postgame analysis needed! One over riding concern now! BEAT MICHIGAN!!!! Forget Whisky...they are pretenders, look at our record. Now we focus on the scUM!If Tressel or Meyer had been coaching last year, we would be going for nine in a row! Can I even begin to tell you how much I hate Michigan? In 1975, four of us were the last people to be asked to leave the Outhouse after the Buckeyes beat scUM, we jumped in our car and drove like lunatics to get back home to watch the WOODY HAYES SHOW!I am 65 years old and have gone on the field after every win over scUM! Will never forget 1970, 2002, 2006.....those were special! My three sons were taught never to boo anyone, except Michigan....we hate them!

  • I hate the way Herman calls plays. I love how he teaches the offense but Urb has a WAY better feel when calling plays during games. The only time I've seen the offense kick ass is when Urb has told Herman what play will work. I really want Urb calling the plays next year. He's just got better vision for the course of a game. This year was the perfect year to teach Herman to quit being too gimmicky. I cant be mad at getting him much needed experience i can tell him is use your tailback! Throw some flag routes!!!!!

  • It was the least satisfying game of the year from an offensive standpoint. Not that fun to watch at times. I thought they ran Miller too much. Glad the D stepped it up.

  • If you are going to run an up-tempo offense, then run an up-tempo offense! When the Buckeyes do that, the offense is at its best. But, up-tempo is not checking the sidelines before every play while everyone stands around and the Defense has plenty of time to substitute and make adjustments. Run the plays and tell Miller quickly and decisively what play you want him to run next. Then snap the ball and go! We have superior personnel and Coaches. Just do it!

  • We ran that 5 wide set entirely too much, but Wiscinsin defensed it the same everytime from what I saw: they put 6 guys on the LOS and played man coverage. One of the 6 dropped as a spy, the other 5 rushed and our receivers all ran deep routes that took 10 seconds to develop. It was brutal to watch, but we kept doing it!

  • Duane, I attended the game and had great seats. From where we were, Philly Brown was open at least a half a dozen times and Braxton seemed to be more interested in running. Wisconsin pulled their safety up (24) and one of their LB's to make sure he couldn't get out. That worked for them until the pass/run in OT where he finally broke loose down to the 2 yard line.

I agree 100%. My only comment is that we have seen bits of Tresselball this year. Remember the tendency to run Hyde up the middle in a lot of those early games. Central Fla. and Cal., even in the Big Ten games. That's why the Bucks have been getting off to such slow starts. Herman believes in it and keeps calling a play that doesn't work. Now in many games, the Bucks blew up in the second half, and perhaps that was due to the fact that they kept running that early play. I don't know. But for a mensa guy, he has sure seemed slow in adjusting.

Thankfully, Urban says they have to open things up big time this week. Would love to see this O hitting on all cylinders for all four quarters.

when I watch college football I actually see alot of Tresselball, running the ball early if you say. Stanford, Alabama, Notre Dame etc. etc. etc.
It is called football teams run the football.
Meyer is a running offense type coach. When you have better players you don't need some flashy trickery to win.
Execution is the problem during the early stages of games and I don't think Herman and Meyer feel they need to take risks with a relatively young Qb. When Herman coached at Rice probably 80% of the time Rice had inferior talent. Maybe that is why Rice had those incredibly bizarre stats, Herman probably needed an open offense to win. When Ohio State jammed the football down Wisconsin throat in overtime It looked like that Herman is in the Mensa society. Maybe they executed properly
    Football is not rocket science.

So you know which plays Meyer tells Herman to run.. Let me guess all the successful plays are called because of Meyer and the bad ones are Herman... sounds like a case of Urban man loving to me.

  • Totally agree with analysis of the game. No deception whatsoever on offense. It was almost like they were holding stuff back for UM. That can't be the case, but it sure was strange. There were numerous plays and sets that they have run all season that weren't run in this game. Offense never got any cadence. I believe the offense will be wide open this week , including plays we haven't seen before.

  • What always baffles me is the abilty of EVERY team we play with a 2 armed QB to complete one short pass after another all day long and our total inability to come close to that. When Walt Harris was on the staff we were a passing machine. Before that and after we have forgotten the short possession pass, yet everyone else runs it on us. I mean, seriously, look at the no-names who have had career days against the Buckeyes. I know, 11-0, but really?

Meyer stated that he AND Herman were calling the offensive plays.....he admitted in the post game presser that they should have run Hyde much more.

Meyer will insert himself where he see's fit.......
