I agree 100 percent duane. It's amazing to me to see just how bad shugarts was.

4 years & he still jumps offsides? That is either a lack of discipline or intelliegence, maybe both. Howard going pro > Yea my h.s. sophomore is too. Bollman is a dinosaur that needs to become extinct in the OSU football program. For as tall as Miller is, doesn't it seem he gets his passes knocked down quite a bit? He must of been told not to run much. loking fwd. to "next year", so much for OSU reloading....

  • The entire staff will be fired after Michigan weekend. Done deal. New coach announced within 24 hours of that.

Thats the only action that will prevent a long term shift in league power including recruiting. I don't want to be Penn state.

  • Gee, Duane finally takes off the rose colored glasses. tOSU program has had serious coaching problems the last few years. Now the new mantra will be we are too young.

How many " 5*' OL are going to come here and flame out before we acknowledge a problem. 9 sacks. I guess the Gholston fellow isn't too bad. Jerrel Worthy humiliated the OL.

Braxton Miller may be the last great HS QB we attract. Fickell didn't bite the bullet against Akron and start Brax. Ease him in under game conditions against the soft part of the schedule and give him a chance to develop. Use his strength. Roll him out. Some quick hitters, screens etc.We did not prepare in the spring or summer to have him as the QB. JB is who he is, no surprise with his performance/

NO PRESSURE on the QB. That is a staple of tOSU defense. That and soft coverage by the corners. Been true for several years at least. That is scheme and recruiting.

Why is Andrew sweat still starting. I'm sorry, but he can't control the edge, play the screen or tackle consistently.
Our defense can't tackle well in general. Ina year likme this, Shazier should play much more. Freshman mistakes I can live with. If DePriest can play good minutes for Alabama, why can't Shazier play here.

Now I know the " experts" on the board will have sophisticated explanations. This reminds of a joke. Man comes home and finds his wife in bed having sex with another man. The husband yells at his wife " What are you doing in bed with another man". She replies, " I wasn't doing anything. Who are you going to believe, me or your lying eyes?"

Time to largely clean house- Fickel, Bollman, Siciliano and Tressel. Bring in a new staff. I hope they keep a couple like Vrabel.

  • After watching this game, I am praying for an offensive superstar HC (hopefully one that realizes he doesn't know dick about D). If we can't get Meyer, my dream scenario is Mike Leach with a good D coordinator that he can delegate the entire defense too.

I know Leach is not the greatest thing since sliced bread, but I am starving for an exciting/innovative O. When you watch other teams, not even good ones, they just seem to execute so much better than tOSU. IMO this is not even close to a talent thing, this is a coaching thing.

The entire offense is out of sync and even the defense is showing a lack of fundamentals (missed tackles, blown coverages). The penalties, the comments from the players, etc. this is about the coaches even more than it is about the players. I could except a well executed 6-6 season that is capped because of our players lack of talent, this year is different, it is hard to watch the talent that is on the field get squandered by poor coaching.

I get that we weren't going to get Gus Malzan (sp?) from Auburn (or anyone else like that). But, there has to be guys out there that just haven't gotten their chance or are at a different level that people in that world believe that they will be "awesome".

Basically, we played it safe and the results are what we have all been forced to witness.

You can't tell me there aren't great offensive minds out there in the NAIA level or smaller NCAA schools. Those coaches make "very little". If you offer (maybe even a couple of them) a chance to come in and make a few hundred thousand, while getting a chance to coach Ohio State football players (in the Shoe), I'd imagine they'd have considered it.

What about at the high school level? What if you brought in a great smaller NCAA school "offensive mind" and a great hight school coach with an amazing offensive mind. How about that Malk guy? (or someone like that).

We just don't seem to have anyone with an "idea". I'd imagine the conversation on the sideline was like "they're all over us out there, what should we do?" "I don't know" "beats me" blah, blah, blah.

We need knowledge, ideas, and planning.

  • Don't mind keeping the defensive staff. The d has been solid this year with a lot of young inexperienced
Players. But the offensiv3 staff is horrible the worst I have ever scene. Might not have a loss this year if we had some offensive production

  • This team is 5-0 with a legit OC. We don't need a crazy type (Chip Kelly, Mike Leach) OC. We need a Walt Harris type who knows how to mix things up. We have a very good defense that is being hung out to dry. What a shame. This team is loaded with talent. We instantly become a national contender again next year with the right HC (Urban Meyer, Bob Stoops, etc).

+1. We just need a pro style offense with a good balaence between running an throwing. Look at Saban and Bama. They run an offense very similar to Tressel and they have great success with it.

Good to see the Ohio boys (Worthy, Adams & Allen) came to play against the school that did not want them. Brewster is overrated! Shugarts just plain sucks, Howard is a lost puppy, stick a fork in Moeller, the play calling blows, the QB coach is a panty waste and the we cannot handle a short passing game....wow pretty much sums up a 6-6 season!

  • I'm perplexed by the angst.
Anyone who ever thought Luke Fickell was a serious candidate for this job beyond this year is not an analytical football mind at this level.
We've seen first-year coaching bobbles all season long, inability to prepare for the 2-point conversion that Toledo used successfully in Game 2 (a formation Beckman has used since he's been at Toledo), inability to prepare his team mentally for the bigger challenges on the schedule (we're 0-for-2 in that department and will be 0-for-5 by the end of the month), inability to manage the clock, inability to understand when and how to use timeouts (which has been repeated twice in the last three weeks), inability to hold his offensive staff accountable, inability to even know the proper way of throwing a challenge flag.
All of these are glaring and obvious rookie mistakes being made at the Ohio State level. These mistakes will not be tolerated in the future and yet should be expected right now.
It's not Luke's fault. You can't rush nature's time table, and he's an infant as a head coach. I blame those who aren't intelligent enough to see him for what he is, and expect him to be what he's not, a seasoned individual capable of leading this program.
The next guy will have no excuses, and if he doesn't have the chops, that's on the university brass.
This is a lost season. Period. Clearly it was going to be that way when the announcement was made on Memorial Day. Anyone who expected something different is a straight OSU homer with no concept of this roster or its experience level.
This team could easily be 2-3 were Toledo a touch sharper. It will be 3-5 by the end of the month, and is looking at a sure home blowout by Wisconsin, and a probable one at Nebraska.
I hope folks know and now understand what we're looking at, a rookie head coach, a rookie quarterback, and don't take out their frustrations on them. Booing isn't going to solve the problems Jim Tressel saddled us with, and it's only going to hurt Miller and Fickell.
I hope OSU fans are smart enough not to turn on them, and destroy their confidence. Nothing good will come of that.

  • Luke is a team player, a great Buckeye, and is taking the hit for the future of Buckeye football. It is always tough to follow a legend, especially with the timing that Luke had. With the timing of Tress's departure, we had to hire internally and picking up additional coaches was not really an option....you don't want to install a new system with the likelihood that it would be replaced just a year later. This is the price that we are paying for the Tat 5 and Coach Tress's lapse in judgment.

Luke's chance of keeping the job was very slim to start with and it disappeared into the lights of Miami, he knew it when he threw in the towel that evening in the waning minutes. No coach will keep more than one or two coaches...especially given how sour the taste will be in the mouth of Buckeye fans by seasons end. Fick needs to go elsewhere and gain experience that may lead him to being a true Head Coach somewhere...he clearly has some work to do in that regard and no doubt realizes that. He will make it work somewhere else but that will not be in Columbus. One of the senior coaches should have been the one taking the hit this year, I find it shameful that the youngest and most promising option was hung out to dry and set his career back.

Good post. In hindsight, Luke should have declined to be the interim coach and stayed on as co-DC. He would get fired by the new coach next season, but he would have probably landed a job quickly at a MAC school. Now, this is going to be a black eye on his resume.

  • All so true, Luke is over his head, Bollman has sucked for many years.. he must have had leverage on Tress... But I do think Urban Meyer would come here. he would instantly help with the national recruiting. The media loves him. he has been a winner at all levels. Started out small at a MAC moved to utah then the big Time. Thats what Luke needed to do. But if not Meyer then maybe the guy at OK State,, They have a great Offense and he has been winning with inferior talent compared to Texas and Oklahoma. Either one and I would be happy>>

  • You came closer to admitting you were wrong than I've ever seen you do. You stopped short of eating the crow that you should have for predicting a 38-10 stomping on FRR, but I give you credit for at least manning up a little. You have been very off for more than a few articles about this team, with you article a week ago after the Colorado game being completely over the top! You put waaaaaay to much faith in beating bad teams.

It's going to be a long year. This team is just not very good.
