Maryland & Rutgers to the Big Ten (officially joining July 2014)

  • Per Jeff Ermann at Inside MD Sports on the 247Sports network.

I wonder if the 14th school is G-Tech or Rutgers. I hope it's the former. (EDIT: Sounds like it's definitely Rutgers. Announcement coming tomorrow.)

EDIT II: Maryland will officially join July 1, 2014. I imagine the same is true of Rutgers.

Just read an article that thinks Rutgers drop this week and informs the Big East they are opting out.
If so, Georgia Tech would be wise to jump on that huge Big Ten check we will be handing out with the TV foot print moving into New York, New Jersey, DC and Baltimore.
That Yes TV deal with Rutgers, Fox Sports and Cable could be too much to say no to, also Big Ten gets games in Yankee Stadium, the new Giants stadium and the new arena in New Jersey for title and regular season games.
Tell Penn State see you whiners, add Georgia Tech.

wow! I don't mind them because of being able to recruit in that area easier. I just hope that North Carolina or Notre Dame will be added.

  • This is a great move by the B1G....people don't understand that this has NOTHING to do with the success of a schools sports teams!

This is about money, the National foot print of the BTN and the AAU. As a result, the rich just got richer. Welcome Maryland and Rutgers (or GaT).

This is about $$$$$$$$$$$$; not competitive football.

You happen to be one of the few who get the overall picture since about a week and a half ago.
This is all about money, and we leap into the eastern sea board TV markets, and the AAU endowments grow big time.
If Rutgers is added, they have a huge AAU research fund up and down their footprint, and they have a Yes TV agreement.
The pay outs for Big Ten schools to upgrade their facilities, recruiting budgets and other items increases immensely.
Think about a Big Ten title game in the new Giants stadium? Big Ten tourney in the new Arena in New Jersey.
Penn State and Indiana just had games at Fed Ex Field with Maryland.
OSU vs. Rutgers (assuming they get in) in Yankee Stadium like Notre Dame did, opens up a lot of avenues and the rich Big Ten got a ton richer.

Agreed. The timing seemed wierd to me until I saw about the contract renewals for 2017.

I know some folks will not like this move but I think it is an absolute home run. I think Delany has done his research and is all about the benjamins.

Money drives this as teams will get higher payouts will be able to affford bigger coaches and facilities. He is leaving his lagacy before retirement. BTN is a monster success!

  • It's as if Delany and the rest of the Big Ten brass got together and said "How can we be ridiculed even more on a national level? I've got it, let's add Maryland and Rutgers!"

    Dave Biddle

  • This is a great move not just to gain access to big TV markets, but also for recruiting. There are ZERO college football powers in the North East. Because of that an unusually high number of top recruits will want to go to school elsewhere. We will have an edge over the SEC schools now because we will at least be in the same conference.

I hope we add Rutgers and not Ga Tech as the 14th. There are already a dozen football powers competing for talent in Georgia, but the New Jersey / New York areas have no in conference regional power.

I know it's about money, but I don't get excited to watch schools' bank accounts. I get excited to watch good football.
