McCray to SCum? Detroit Free Press 3.6.2012

  • Michigan’s 2013 recruiting class is off to a very strong start with 13 commitments, nearly all of them four-star prospects and six ranked in the Rivals.com top 100.

The class could get another boost Thursday when Trotwood (Ohio) Madison linebacker Mike McCray makes his college choice. U-M is one of six finalists for McCray, along with Arizona, Oklahoma, Illinois, Tennessee and South Carolina.

The bigger impact of a commitment from McCray is his talent as a player. At 6-foot-4 and 230 pounds, he’s already the size of many college linebackers, and could play middle or strongside -- or even grow into a weakside defensive end in college.

“McCray has room to grow in his game,” said Rivals.com Midwest recruiting analyst Josh Helmholdt. “He can add strength and definition to his body in the weight room this off-season, which should also improve what is already pretty good speed. If he takes another step forward with off-season preparation, McCray is going to be scary good.”

McCray is aware of the benefits of hard work during the off-season. He’s hitting the weight room to improve as a player.

"I'm working on my strength, speed and conditioning,” he said, “and just staying in shape. I'm just working hard to try and make it to college and also get back to the state championship."

Madison won the state title last season and McCray certainly comes from a winning pedigree -- his father, Mike Sr., played for Ohio State and was a team captain in 1988. The Buckeyes have yet to offer the younger McCray, however, and he is set to announce a decision without waiting on a scholarship invitation from Urban Meyer.

Should McCray choose U-M, he will be the first linebacker in the class and only the fourth defensive player. After U-M’s defense-heavy class of 2012, picking up McCray, the No. 44 player in the nation according to Rivals.com, would show that Brady Hoke and Greg Mattison are continuing to emphasize defense, and particularly linebackers.

McCray announces at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at his high school.

  • My goodness, how many McCray and Gedeon threads do we need? There are 25 of them floating around from the past day or so, can't you link in there?
You would think this is the UofM 247 site with all the McCray/Gedeon to UofM threads, it is literally getting disgusting.
OSU did not and will not offer McCray because they have better prospects, how about that?
Lets post some more Charlton to UofM stuff and revisit that while we are at it.
Helmboldt is a former UofM Rivals blog guy, I would expect him to do nothing but be a homer. Scarey good, show me the Bama, Florida, USC, LSU and Auburn type offers for McCray.

I'm one of those guys. And I'm not a nervous Nelly. I welcome their improvement. I wasn't born and raised in Ohio, so I don't have or understand the visceral hatred of Michigan. Most of you guys would cut your nose off despite your face. I want Michigan to become respectable again. The Big Ten needs it. Ohio State needs it. Beating them year after year when they're unranked, and then bragging about it, makes us look pathetic. We should welcome the competition and then dominate them when they have some level of relevence. The greatest moment for Ohio State football in the last decade plus, after the NC win against Miami, was the 42-39 win by a #1 ranked OSU over a #2 ranked Michigan. It was too bad we embarrassed ourselves a month later against Florida.

So bring 'em on. Anyone on this board who is afraid of a resurgent Michigan ought to go hide in their basement and play YouTube reruns of the Rich Rod era. The rest of us will be joyously watching the Urb kick a very good Michigan team's ass every fall.

Get your idioms correct...it is cut your nose off to spite your face.

  • Why is he in such a hurry to commit? Is it because he thinks the Buckeyes will never show interest?

  • Michigan's recruiting is intriguing..Michigan seems to identify talented LBer that some overlook or under-rate..Such as current signee Joe Bolden from Cincy..Bolden is tackling machine that has the instincts of AJ Hawk.

Bolden is nowhere close to AJ Hawk. He looked awful in that all-star game. C'mon now.

Comparing Bolden now to Hawk is comedic gold. Check back with me if Bolden ever makes first team all Big Ten. Hawk was a first team AA twice and top 10 NFL pick, until Bolden proves anything on the gridiron that is pure conjecture, because Hawk did his talking at the college level already.
