Tressel: Well, you know, we got some work to do in that area, they are working hard, we have some speed, new routes to learn, you know, and until they figure it out, we will just run Dave, you know.

    "Dayton's Own"

  • I wonder if this release will finally put to rest the following rumors and predictions that never seem to die:

    1. That Kenny Hayes is a head case mentally and doesn't have a legitimate migraine problem.

    2. That Tommy Brown, Antonio Underwood, Chris Carter and even Marcus Hall don't have a future here.

    3. That Rod Smith will ever live up to his recruiting and bowl practice hype.

    On a positive note:

    1. The depth at D-line is probably this team's biggest asset. The only missing piece is a true edge rusher (which should arrive this summer when AW & NS arrive).

    2. Urban appears to be blending his offensive ideal with the realities of his personnel. Instead of trying to fit the square peg into the round hole, he's doing his best to maximize the potential of Tressel guys that might not have been Meyer recruits (see Z. Boren, N. Vannett, J. Hall).

    Biggest head scratcher:

    1. As mentioned above... Who is the target of Urban's wrath with respect to the receiving corps? It seems everyone is in the doghouse--a TY Williams-type doghouse that now is filled with Zach Smith and everyone else in the position group.

I just don't see the group as being that bad. And I worry that a little kick in the pants motivation gone too far creates a legitimate problem with attitudes and performance amongst the receivers--and that's not to suggest that these guys are fragile and need to be coddled.

  • I'd say the WR being unprepared has more to do with the new offense and the fact that they have never received reps in a real game. We didn't exactly "open it up". Last year!!!

  • Correction which will probably blow your whole theory out of the water. --Drayton was WR coach one year. Meyer made the decision to retain him. If Meyer didn't want Drayton when he came to OSU -- Drayton wouldn't be here. Drayton became RB coach as soon as Meyer came to OSU--he is NOT WR coach. I'm not sure where you thought you were going with your comment but it is off-base. Zach Smith is WR coach and this is his first year.

this is exactly how I took it. These remarks look badly upon the players and Drayton.

Drayton is not WR coach -- had the gig for one year not his fault.

  • I'm sure the offense will have its struggles early on, but I think the defense will be very good, if not great.

I think the O-line will be solid, the WR's will be improved, Stoney is gonna kill it and Braxton will be electric. If a pass rusher or two steps up, Bino has a good year and Travis Howard plays better, we'll be really, really tough.

Stan Drayton has been the WR coach for a couple of years, now moved back to his traditional role as RB coach. He coached with Meyer at FL and I believe left while Meyer was still there to take a similar position - parallel move. I think those facts are accurate, but I could be mistaken. I wonder if there is any "friction" between Meyer and Drayton, and if that explains the somewhat insulting reference to the WRs being the most unprepared group he has ever seen. That was a coaching indictment, not a reflection on the players only...

For what it's worth, when Drayton was at Syracuse he told me he left Florida because he was miserable the year they won the championship and he wanted to get closer to his family in Cleveland. He said he never saw his family; was expected to be at the facility 24 hours a day and even slept there. He was only at Syracuse for a year then went back to Florida so there must not have been a huge amount of friction between he and Meyer. I also do not think Meyer would have kept him in C-bus if there was friction, but that is just my opinion.

  • Is the Adam Griffin, listed as a second team DB, Archie' son? Just wondering because if so a lot of people poohpoohed his offer as undeserved. I for one am fine with Archie's son getting a schollie if he never sees the field, but if he has played onto the two-deep then even better.

Likewise many wanted TheMeyer to pull Luke Roberts' offer before signing day, and now he is listed as a second team LB already.

I don't make judgements about recruiting beyond what the national ratings say (and because I know less about football than most of you guys) and I treat them as suspect - I put my trust in the staff - Tress or TheMeyer - to know what they are doing.

September can't get here soon enough!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought.

  • Well personally, I dont believe this 2 deep for a second.............

The OL with no-walkons in the 2 deep...I call BS

The WR group is BS too......Thomas at the very least is wrong and Southward will see playing time too

If O.Johnson sees the field before Tanner then the coaches are nuts................

Griffin will be lost in the shuffle when the frosh show up..........

So I'm of the opinion we see 8-11 changes in that list before September 1.............

I dont believe the MLB line-up either.........

    Thanks, Steve.

Just letting you know, for the FB, you have Adam Boren as the backup. Would love another Boren here, but pretty sure it's Homan!

Thanks and keep up the good work!!

Thanks for the correction! I will go through the responses and provide my two cents.

so is michael thomas our 2nd option behind devin smith? or is he really behind philly brown and evan spencer too? kinda surprised at that one but maybe i was reading it wrong. if he's really our 4th option maybe i should be more optimistic about the position

OK, to explain the WR situation Brown and Smith are the top two at split end and flanker. If they bring in a third receiver, it could be Spencer, Reed, Thomas or somebody else. It will all be personnel groupings, if that makes any sense. I'd say Thomas is third in the pecking order.

Spencer and Reed were hurt in the spring, but they deserve to be listed. Instead of going 3 deep at those 2 spots, they "created" a third receiver spot on the depth chart and put them there. That's all. Sounds like those 5 are the 5 they may trust the most.

There is NO friction between Meyer and Drayton. He would not have retained him if there was. What Meyer means when he says they were ill prepared is they're green as grass and have never played much or done much or even know much about what it takes to prepare and play at this level.

They're all young guys sophs and younger still except for Fields. Problem is they are the only guys they have. Can't fire them, gotta coach them up, but he's putting it out there he ain't happy one bit with the results he's seen so far.
