Meyer Puts Out 'APB For Tough Guys'

This sentence got my attention. (It would make a most interesting new thread, but unfortunately would rapidly escalate into another Fickell bashing thread, so I'll ask my question here.)

What do you expect to be different, schemes, formation, who plays and where, execution, or what?

Those are all great questions......from what i have seen it's execution/effort. The things that everyone has been critical of is all fundamentals. Fick was right when he said we do not have that "guy" in the middlle taking control, changing plays etc.....our young talent is not ready to get out there yet otherwise i think they would be.

For example....i just watched something that showed the replay of the 59 yard TD run by the IU RB. Simple run play....i re-watched it.....Shazier was there but did got off of the block late but behind him was (I think Christian Bryant)......he was too deep and too far right AND he did not react well enough, otherwise he shouldh ave been up there busting that RB's ass to the ground. Because fo that the guy had a clear lane, easy big play TD.

It just seems like it is a lot of little things but at the end of the day these kids need to execute and play good fundamental football. The fact that they are stil incorporating drills validates that they need to execute and it is not scheme or formation or who plays. The freaking talent is there.....

Again, it will be very interesting to see how this D plays Saturday. Purdue will scheme to pick us apart....just like they did last year. Remember when we gave up that freaking late TD pass? Miscommunication on defense...something that never should happen if we have guys out there focused on what they are doing. We need some leaders on that D (specfically d-backs/LB's).

Hell, i almost wonder if we just need to freaking blitz 70% of the time and play tight man and allow our D-line to work their magic and take some risks and close up the gaps in the middle of the field. If we get 10 pass interferfence penalties...who cares!!?

rewatch the play....shazier cannot take on the block and two gap responsibilty.....klein leaves him out to dry, goes directly to his left instead of reading middle first as ha has plenty of time to go straight ahead if the play goes to the defensive left and roby has the whole right side by himself....the defense needs to change the call....u can see simon motioning people to the rt. before he goes down.....it is a busted call......the defense over shifted out of the middle and had no safety that i could see over the top behind shazier and roby.....otherwise where was he......cause he certainly didn't get blocked and i never saw him till it was at the ten yard line.....that means he was coming from far away....this is defense 101.....never vacate the middle....no time out no nothing and it was first half.....please who is in charge

So that is exactly my point....execution. And i stand corrected...it was Roby....unless I am seeing something differently than you....here it is......3:08 in

  • i looked at this play last night from a different angle and roby is all by himself on the defensive rt side.....leaving shazier alone in the middle by himself cause klein is lined up directly behind simon at DE...now i understand a slant was likely to be called cause the coaches complained about the dt getting crushed.....but still we had no safety over the top....granted we were playing the 3 receivers man to man in the face.....still no reason to take both safeties for over the top coverage only 1 .....bad scheme in my book.....this is not shaziers fault or robys...if anything it is scheme or defensive line not slanting hard enough to our rt.

If this was Tressel giving a speech, he would be telling you how GREAT a team Indiana has become and giving them props. Thank God Urban Myer works here now. He F...ing gets it!

It's not about getting or not it's about keeping your comments inside the team and passifying the media. Many coaches do it. Urban had an issue with the media at Florida and threw the Orlando Sentinel guy out. Tressel was just being a YES man to limit the distractions from the media.

Coaches deal with the media in their own ways some tell the media all and some tell them what they want to hear. In the end there is no coach in the word that would be happy with the defense at Indiana it just alot of the won't tell the media what they feel and sugarcoat the answers.

regardless we absolutely HAVE to stop giving up big plays like that......I just felt like Roby could have taken a slightly different approach there but I am just a fan watching video and not playing.......

we absolutely have to stop big plays but when u essentially have 2 guys besides the d-line responsible for the middle and rt. edge that is a failure in alignment and somebody should have seen they weren't making the adjustment and called time out.....roby is the only guy at 2nd level for the rt. edge....he absolutely can't be late outside or it is his arse......and klein went to where 3 other guys were playing man up on down the line....totally not necessary unless the d-line is slanting rt. hard......this leaves shazier alone against a blocker in a big hole.....epic fail for scheme because no safety in middle to help...safety should be there to fill between roby and shazier .....
