New Divisions

  • The one good thing that may come out of adding two crappy programs to the Big Ten is that we can get rid of 'Legends' and 'Leaders.' I have no faith that the Big Ten will actually get rid of those two names, but either way, we'll get a realignment. How should we do this?

    Rutgers
    Maryland
    Ohio State
    Penn State
    Michigan
    Michigan State
    Indiana

    West
    Wisconsin
    Minnesota
    Purdue
    Nebraska
    Illinois
    Northwestern
    Iowa

    The obvious problem is that four out of the top 6 programs would be in the same division.

    North South is also an option, although it's the same problem, almost worse. I did actually check the geography for all of these, but it's close on a few. Penn State and Nebraska are very close in terms of which one is further north.

    This. Makes the most sense and very little changes with their current games, divisions and cross divisional one team match up every year.

  • I think this hurts Ohio state now because the addition of Maryland with the likely addition of Rutgers or GA Tech means a weak schedule just got even weaker and so does the league.

    With Maryland now in the picture there's a strong chance that pushes non-division games out the window. I'm sure no matter what the Ohio St/Michigan game will still be on, but let's face it; the divisions won't be re-aligned again, they'll just put the two new members in different divisions. Which means not only will we lose a non-division game but it will be replaced by an in-division game against weaker competition based upon current division alignments.

    That translates into Ohio State not playing one of these 3(Nebraska, Michigan St, or Michigan) very often. BIG PROBLEM!!!!!! Especially, when you talk about the playoffs coming up. Those three teams typically will be on the top half of the B1G and ranked in the Top 25 which increases our strength of schedule. So if we're not playing them in an non-division game, then who are we playing in a division game? Well, its going to be Maryland or Rutgers/GA Tech(Depending on who goes to which division.

    See the problem with strength of schedule?

    ....The more time goes on I just think we're going to need to look at moving conferences in order to stand a chance. I just do not have faith this conference will return to glory anytime in the 2-8 years and that's bad for getting into the playoff series coming up because our only hope as things look right now is that we run the table. WE WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO LOSE 1 GAME and still get in, ever!

    I am praying so hard that they do another full re-alignment because we are being put in the shittier conference if this is how it turns out. A weak SOS is becoming weaker if it plays out like this.

    The only marquee wins for tOSU would be against Wisconsin, Michigan, and Mich St./Nebraska. Everyone else sucks.

    You can count on PSU getting ready to suck worse, Indiana, Purdue, Rutgers(they usually suck, this is a good year), and Maryland to suck.

    Atleast 6 of our wins would be against bottom of the barrel teams when you count the first game of the season(which is always a warm up game).

    Rutgers is 9-1 right now and probably headed to a BCS bowl, and coming off a nice winning season last year with a bowl win, while their recruiting is on the up tick, and this current class has some legit east coast talent.
    Rutgers is 5-1 in their last six bowls, the Big Ten would covet that.
    Rutgers is becoming better real fast in football, that 9-1 would look good on OSU's schedule right now if we were bowl eligible and needed a SOS bump in the computers.
    Not including this double digit win season with a probable BCS bowl waiting, Rutgers has went 9-4 2 of the previous 3 seasons and won both bowls, not many Big Ten teams can say that.

  • They need to bring Michigan over and switch out Wisconsin.

    Michigan and MSU can then have a protected rivalry game since they won't be in the same division any longer. Wisconsin is also closer to more geographical foes.

  • These is the construct I like for the new divisions. This put three traditional powers at the tope of both division, and balances out the teams that traditionally can't recruit well enough to contend of the title (Indiana and Minnesota).

    Ohio State
    TSUN
    Michigan State
    Northwestern
    Illinois
    Purdue
    Indiana

    Wisconsin
    Nebraska
    Penn State
    Rutgers
    Iowa
    Minnesota
    Maryland

    This construct also prevents enduring cross division games (like Ohio State and TSUN) which allow more diversity in the schedule.

  • Maybe we knew this was coming, which was why we started scheduling the likes of Texas, Georgia, Oregon, etc... - not just due to the new 4-team playoff. If we aren't adding heavyweights to our conference, we need to be sure to play some in the non-BIG games and wanted to lock some of the marquis programs in prior to our in-conference competition and others doing the same. I am probably giving our admin too much credit - just thinking out loud here.

    This is a pretty good guess. Wisky would make some degree of sense as well but then you may knock off some parity in that move.

    That said, i think Rutgers and Maryland will up their football programs greatly by joining the BIG. They both have everything to be successful on the field they just needed the platform and the BIG may have just given them that. Previously no one in NY/NJ wanted to play at Rutgers, while in the Big East. Selling that program now is a whole different animal. Same could be said to a lesser extent about Maryland.

    If you look at the map of the BIG programs, VA makes a lot of sense to be next on the clock imo.

    TV Market, exposure and ratings for BIG 10 netweork. It brings in more $$$.(adding NY and Washington DC market)

    It is obviously not a football decision..

    This makes the most sense... It aligns Illinois with Northwestern, a natural rivalry...

    The question I have is when will the "final two" come... Georgia Tech??, North Carolina??, Virginia??, ND???

  • E-W is best. Keep in mind that the moves aren't done. I honestly believe we go to 16 with the last two being UVA and UNC. (Both are flagship schools in their state and their states add about 18million people. GaTech doesn't have the penetration in Ga.)

    Those moves would leave us with about 39-40% of the US population in in B1G footprint. Make for massive leverage in TV negotiations, etc.

    Assuming those are the schools added, it makes sense to get your sexiest teams into the new markets as often as possible to build interest/viewership. Thus, the best divisions are geographic, which also happens to be the best for travel expenses etc.

    East:
    OSU, scUM, MSU, PSU, RU, UMD, UVA, UNC

    West:
    Neb, Iowa, Wisky, Illinois, NWU, IU, PU, Minnie.

    Guys... We are the only ones who care about being in the same division as Michigan. It was not a priority of the Big 10 the first time around and there is no reason to believe it will be this time around. They aren't going to stack the East and leave Wisconsin and Nebraska as the only decent teams in the West. Our only hope of being in the same division as Michigan is if Texas is added, so cross your fingers.

    R you only looking at what Maryland brings to the table in Football in the year 2012? You reference both programs as "crappy"
    is this based on emotionalism or fact?

    or the whole picture ....and each University, state, political, and revenue?

    Lot of good here outside the scope of just football....I think....Maryland is interesting choice. Fits conference in a lot of areas
    except fan support. Possibly I don't get it either ...than again I am not as smart as Jim Delany...

    On the football side, as with Rutgers ...
    I am sure conference has looked at best case scenerios with projections on what these teams can add with real support - including
    T.V and revenue etc etc.
