  • Headed to see some family in Connecticut next week. I'm going to go into NYC for a few days. Never been. Any tips?

  • Great bar if your younger, it's called 675. It's in a basement in the Meat Packing District. Great DJ

  • Circle line boat tour. 3 hour tour.....lots of fun facts and history - if you like that sort of thing. Departs from 42nd street on the west side. Goes past statue of liberty etc....great way to understand the size and diversify of the city. Its way more interesting than you'd ever imagine. Sit inside.

Afterwards just walk around downtown. Walk. Walk. Walk. If you see a bunch of tourists you're in the wrong spot.

    Skip midtown.

  • Not sure how long you're going to be in the city but no one really understands how big it is until you're there. The first time I went was for 3 days and I wanted to see as much as possible so in order to be as efficient as possible I planned my day by location of what I wanted to see. I broke it up into Downtown/Lower Manhattan one day, Midtown one day, and Upper Manhattan the last day. It worked out really well.

If you love or even like history then the Museum of Natural History is a must. One thing to keep in mind if you do want to visit any museums is that many are quite large and will take up a large part of your day if you really want to see a lot. The Natural History Museum is awesome, but HUGE. Lots of kids too, so keep that in mind.

Do Top of the Rock, not the Empire State Building, if you want to get a great view. Totally worth it but expect very long lines.

Again, if you can stand the crowds then Times Square at night is a sight to see.

The 9/11 Memorial is a must if you're near downtown.

In the end, it's really great to just walk around the great neighborhoods and take it all in.

  • The time I went to NYC as an adult, my wife gave me the trip for my birthday - and part of the present was tickets to Broadway's Les Miserables. I didn't tell her, but I was disappointed that we were going to have to "waste" a few of our precious NYC hours on a musical/play. I had no idea what an idiot I was. If you haven't seen a Broadway show, and even if you think you wouldn't be into that sort of thing, you MUST see one! They will be very tough tickets, but "Book of Morman" and "Wicked" would be spectacular choices.

Also, Ground Zero is of course a MUST visit.

The Stanton Island Ferry is a very cheap way to get a good view of the statue of liberty and NYC from a distance.

Finally, I would suggest a meal in Little Italy. Reasonable and excellent.

    Have fun!

I second top of the rock. I've done both and it's a better view IMO with a far easier experience. Most of the regular tourists go to the Empire State Building, so it gives you a much easier trip. When you're in NYC saving time waiting to go up is a huge plus considering how extensive the list of stuff to do is.

Any time I go I'll see some live comedy and a broadway show. Fantastic live entertainment. I generally prefer shows that aren't musicals though.

I ended up skipping all the Museums last time I went because I just didn't get to them with all the cool stuff to do.

The one on the aircraft carrier is awesome though. I always hit that one up and it's never that crowded.

Battery Park is pretty cool. Visiting the Statue of Liberty is interesting and I'm glad I went once, but it isn't what it used to be. The top section is all blocked off so you only get to go part way up. If you could still make it up to the torch that would be a whole different story.

Last time I stayed at the Roosevelt which is right next to Grand Central. Reasonable prices and great location.

I love the city, but second the notion that living there wouldn't be ideal. I could do it for a few years, but I like doing hobbies the require space and greatly enjoy a house.

  • Longtime NYC resident and Buckeye. Do NOT eat in Little Italy. Try these places all local, all cheap, you can bounce around and sample a few. They are all close to each other. I walk this with my family and grab stuff to go from a few of them. Awesome and all local places.

Café habana (prince and elizabeth) take out around the side for corn on the cob. Must do this
Parm -248 Mulberry between prince and spring –two minutes from Habana above, Chicken Parm here to die for.
Mile End 53 Bond St., nr. Bowery, also close. Try the breakfast burger, sick or the pastrami
Katz Deli – Houston St. A NYC legend been there 100 years. Houston St & Ludlow. Corned Beef on Rye. An NYC tradition. Don’t ask for cheese on it!
Zoe, 245 eldridge just off Houston. A reuben like you have never had. Insane.
(This Katz and Mile End are similar so maybe choose one or two)
Meatball Shop. Stanton & Ludlow –Like fifteen different kinds. Meatball Heaven
B & H – Chees blinztes. 2nd ave between St. Marks and 7th st. Yum. My daughter and I eat here once a week. Old school awesome.
Pommes Frites. Three doors down from B&H get a fries and try the 100 different sauces. $4 of fried goodness, hence the line.
Ippudo - 65 Fourth Ave/10st just north of Astor Place #6 stop. Killer Ramen/Soup
Xian. St Marks between 2nd ave & 1st Closer to 1st Ave next to Mexican place. Awesome pulled noodles and their mini kumin lamb burgers are great. Also cheap as dirt.
Porchetta - 7th between 1st and Ave A.Sarah Jenkins (famous chef) italian street food sandwiches. Excellent.
Caracas Arepas Bar - 7th between 1st and Ave A - Great Venezuelan mini corn meal pita pockets stuffed with different things. Venezuelan national dish
Bobwhite Supper Counter – Ave C and 7th. Kick ass east village fried chicken.
Momofuku Milk Bar 12st Just east of 2nd Ave. Try the Crack Pie. Awesome Desert.
Momofuku Noodle bar for Sticky Buns. David Changs killer buns.
Artichoke Basille – 14th St between 2nd Ave & 1st Ave –Artichoke Slice. Keith Richards has been seen on line here. Maybe it's what is keeping him alive.

  • DON'T drive anywhere there. Take the subway wherever you go. Little Italy. Boat tour is gr8 if weather is okay.

  • Stay away from Times Square. If you've seen it on tv then that's enough.

I can't bring myself to do it yet but the 9/11 memorial is a must if you're only in town for a few days.

Other than that, I'd recommend hitting up the Carnegie Deli without a doubt.

I just went on a night that wasn't anything special, and not at the busiest time of day. It was crowded but not really that much more so than the rest of NYC. I was in and out of every place I stopped. If you've never been I think it's cool to go once, even if briefly.

I also went right before Christmas a couple years ago, not this close to new years. It might be an absolute mess all the time right now.
