No Early Signing Period Helping OSU

The Buckeyes are fortunate there is no early signing period in college football as there is in college basketball. Dave Biddle has much more in this edition of Bucknotes.

  • The problem with this is the annual Coaching changes. Kids get stuck with little time to recover since most spots are filled. Leave it the way it is.

  • An early signing period would hurt the recruits - you forgot to mention that.

  • Good job. Bidds. I was just thinking this very thing yesterday. I still think it would be good for players, but it would have been rough on us this year. I'd like to think Pittman wouldn't have signed with MSU early, hoping for something to change at tOSU.

  • Yeah imagine Penn St recruits having to stick with that mess... would be an awful situation.

Do you feel the same way about basketball? (Honest question, not trying to be a smartarse.)

  • Kyle Kalis would be a Buckeye then. Now people want the kids to sign early when they fire coaching staffs at a drop of the hat. The recruits are now stuck with a coach they do not want to play for. Instead of people crying about the football teams people would be crying about the recruits getting screwed. Just leave it alone.

i would think the ncaa would grant them a waiver to get out of the commitment, just like the kids at usc got(i.e. seantrel henderson).

  • If we had an early signing period, I think that we would see more kids waiting till late in the process just to protect themselves

It doesn't seem like they fire coaching staffs like they do in football.

That's what I think too. Guys like Kalis or Pittman wouldn't have been forced to sign early if they had a shred of doubt. It would have been unnecessary and a mistake would have been on them. For those who are sure and want the other schools to just go away, it would be a great thing.

  • There could always be a clause in an early signing contract that if the head coach left the program, the recruit could opt out.

  • If there were an early signing period, what would keep athletes from foregoing it and waiting until signing day or simply not making a decision until after the early sign period is over? Clearly, it would be bad for some athletes, particularly those that were committed to Penn State. Committing so early doesn't seem to have huge advantages, that I am aware of, at least not for the athlete.

No he wouldn't. If there happened to be an early signing period, it would be in late August/early Sept. Kalis had flipped to Michigan long before then.

It seems like when Ohio State takes advantage of something then everyone wants to change stuff .Let's change the one and done for Basketball .Thee Ohio State might have had one or two titles by now . A lot of these kids wanted to be Buckeyes before we were being persecuted in front of the world daily on National tv.

  • It wasn't that long ago that schools didn't make offers as early as they do now, giving themselves a chance to see a kid during his senior year before offering. Seems like Penn St. was at the forefront of all these early offerings, if I remember correctly. Maybe they should go back to that way of doing things.

  • I would rather have an early signing period. This year it is helping us. Any other year it is in our best interest.
